Impaired problem solving in Parkinson's disease: impact of a set-shifting deficit.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with specific cognitive deficits in the absence of dementia, including the inability to suppress previously learned responses in a changed context. Our goal was to determine whether this set-shifting deficit is sufficient to account for impaired performance on a problem-solving task, or, instead, whether it is necessary to postulate deficits in one or more other cognitive capacities, such as logical deduction. Deductive reasoning and other conceptual abilities were assessed in 15 nondemented subjects with PD who had never been medicated, 15 nondemented su

Evaluation of electrofunctional data following argon-laser trabeculoplasty in primary open-angle glaucoma.

To establish whether or not glaucomatous damage is reversible, we obtained pattern-reversal electroretinograms (PERGs) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in 25 eyes of 25 patients suffering from bilateral primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) before and after argon-laser trabeculoplasty. The laser treatment was carried out in only one eye chosen at random, and the fellow eye was used as a control. In the present study we intended to verify the possibility of using electrofunctional techniques to determine the two distinct and, probably, consecutive glaucomatous alterations occurring in ganglion

Patterns of performance on the Fuld Object Memory Evaluation in elderly inpatients with depression or dementia.

The Fuld Object Memory Evaluation (Fuld, 1981) was administered to 80 elderly adults (aged 60 to 90 years) who were hospitalized for evaluation and treatment of primary degenerative dementia (PDD), other organic disorders (e.g., Parkinson's disease or multi-infarct dementia), or major depression. Although mean performance in each of the diagnostic groups was below normative levels reported by Fuld (1981), PDD patients performed significantly more poorly than those with depression or other organic disorders. Analysis of subscore patterns failed to support the hypothesis of a selective memory de

Lagged covariance structure models for studying functional connectivity in the brain.

Most cognitive processes are supported by large networks of brain regions. To describe the operation of these networks, it is critical to understand how individual areas are functionally connected. Here, we establish a statistical framework for studying effective and functional brain connectivity, using data obtained with a relatively new neuroimaging method, the event-related optical signal (EROS). The novelty of our approach is the use of timing information (in the form of lagged cross-correlations) in interpreting the connections between areas. Interpretation of lagged cross-correlations ex

Does Cataract Surgery Influence Iris-Based Biometric Authentication?

PURPOSE: This study investigates the impact of cataract surgery on the reliability and accuracy of iris recognition systems used for biometric identification. METHODS: We carried out a prospective observational study on patients undergoing cataract surgery via phacoemulsification. The study comprised 100 participants who underwent cataract surgery. We recorded preoperative iris scans using a standard biometric device (iris camera) and rescanned the same patients after surgery. Matching scores before and after surgery were analyzed to detect discrepancies. We examined the Hamming distance to e

Symmetrical hemispheric priming in spatial neglect: a hyperactive left-hemisphere phenomenon?

Hemispheric rivalry models of spatial neglect suggest that the left hemisphere becomes hyperactive following right-hemisphere lesions since the two hemispheres normally exert an inhibitory influence on each other via callosal connections. Using a masked hemifield priming paradigm, we investigated whether the putative change in hemispheric balance involves other, higher-order abstract representational systems in spatial neglect. Participants consisted of 12 neglect patients with right-hemisphere damage and three groups of control participants, i.e., 12 young healthy controls, 10 age-matched hea

New insights into the neural basis of cognitive control: An event-related fMRI study of task selection processes.

To investigate cognitive control, researchers have repeatedly employed task switching paradigms. The comparison of switch relative to repeat trials reveals longer response times and higher error rates, a pattern that has been interpreted as switching costs. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have shown the involvement of different brain modules in switching conditions, including prefrontal and parietal regions together with other sub-cortical structures. In this study, the aim was to shed light on the brain basis of cognitive control using an approach that proved useful in pr

An fMRI study of perception and action in deaf signers.

Since the discovery of mirror neurons, there has been a great deal of interest in understanding the relationship between perception and action, and the role of the human mirror system in language comprehension and production. Two questions have dominated research. One concerns the role of Broca's area in speech perception. The other concerns the role of the motor system more broadly in understanding action-related language. The current study investigates both of these questions in a way that bridges research on language with research on manual actions. We studied the neural basis of observing

Explore the Functional Connectivity between Brain Regions during a Chemistry Working Memory Task.

Previous studies have rarely examined how temporal dynamic patterns, event-related coherence, and phase-locking are related to each other. This study assessed reaction-time-sorted spectral perturbation and event-related spectral perturbation in order to examine the temporal dynamic patterns in the frontal midline (F), central parietal (CP), and occipital (O) regions during a chemistry working memory task at theta, alpha, and beta frequencies. Furthermore, the functional connectivity between F-CP, CP-O, and F-O were assessed by component event-related coherence (ERCoh) and component phase-locki

Looking under the hood of the dot-probe task: an fMRI study in anxious youth.

BACKGROUND: Anxious youth have shown altered behavioral performance on the dot-probe task, but neural activation patterns provoked by the task remain poorly understood. In particular, neural mechanisms of threat disengagement, a clinically relevant construct, have been inadequately explored. METHOD: During fMRI acquisition, 121 youth (ages 9-13; 90 with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Separation Anxiety Disorder, and/or Social Phobia; 31 nonanxious controls) completed a dot-probe task, which required participants to identify the location of a dot replacing either a neutral or fearful face in a

Transfer of cognitive training across magnitude dimensions achieved with concurrent brain stimulation of the parietal lobe.

Improvement in performance following cognitive training is known to be further enhanced when coupled with brain stimulation. Here we ask whether training-induced changes can be maintained long term and, crucially, whether they can extend to other related but untrained skills. We trained overall 40 human participants on a simple and well established paradigm assessing the ability to discriminate numerosity--or the number of items in a set--which is thought to rely on an "approximate number sense" (ANS) associated with parietal lobes. We coupled training with parietal stimulation in the form of

Heart rate variability and its neural correlates during emotional face processing in social anxiety disorder.

The monitoring and regulation of one's own physiological reactions and cardioregulatory abnormalities are central to the aetiology and maintenance of social anxiety disorder (SAD). We therefore explored the neural correspondences of these heart rate alterations. 21 patients with SAD and 21 matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent 3T-fMRI scanning. Simultaneously, high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) was acquired during a short-term resting period and an implicit emotional face-matching task. Compared to HCs, patients with SAD reported increased self-focused attention while being less

Neural correlates of a computerized attention modification program in anxious subjects.

Computerized attention modification is a relatively new and empirically validated treatment approach for different types of anxiety disorders. However, its neural basis and processes involved are poorly understood. This study examined the effect of a one-time application of an attention modification program (AMP) on neural substrates underlying emotion processing in individuals with high social anxiety. Fourteen individuals with elevated social anxiety symptoms completed an emotional face processing task during functional magnetic resonance imaging before and after AMP, and were subsequently e

Early somatosensory event-related potentials reveal attentional bias for internal stimuli in social anxiety.

The present study used event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to investigate allocation of attentional resources to internal and external stimuli in individuals with social anxiety. High and low socially anxious individuals were presented with depictions of various facial expressions or household objects, followed by an internal (vibration presented to the finger) or external probe (the letter "E"). Participants were told that the vibration signals physiological changes and were asked to detect both probes. High socially anxious individuals showed larger front-central N140 amplitudes in respons

Reduced N400 semantic priming effects in adult survivors of paediatric and adolescent traumatic brain injury.

The immediate and long-term neural correlates of linguistic processing deficits reported following paediatric and adolescent traumatic brain injury (TBI) are poorly understood. Therefore, the current research investigated event-related potentials (ERPs) elicited during a semantic picture-word priming experiment in two groups of highly functioning individuals matched for various demographic variables and behavioural language performance. Participants in the TBI group had a recorded history of paediatric or adolescent TBI involving injury mechanisms associated with diffuse white matter pathology

Differential patterns of abnormal activity and connectivity in the amygdala-prefrontal circuitry in bipolar-I and bipolar-NOS youth.

OBJECTIVE: The functioning of neural systems supporting emotion processing and regulation in youth with bipolar disorder not otherwise specified (BP-NOS) remains poorly understood. We sought to examine patterns of activity and connectivity in youth with BP-NOS relative to youth with bipolar disorder type I (BP-I) and healthy controls (HC). METHOD: Participants (18 BP-I youth, 16 BP-NOS youth, and 18 HC) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while performing two emotional-face gender labeling tasks (happy/neutral, fearful/neutral). Word or word-like? Dissociating orthographic typicality from lexicality in the left occipito-temporal cortex.

Prior lesion and functional imaging studies have highlighted the importance of the left ventral occipito-temporal (LvOT) cortex for visual word recognition. Within this area, there is a posterior-anterior hierarchy of subregions that are specialized for different stages of orthographic processing. The aim of the present fMRI study was to dissociate the effects of subword orthographic typicality (e.g., cider [high] vs. cynic [low]) from the effect of lexicality (e.g., pollen [word] vs. pillen [pseudoword]). We therefore orthogonally manipulated the orthographic typicality of written words and p

Prefrontal dysfunction in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder as measured by near-infrared spectroscopy.

Recent developments in near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) have enabled non-invasive clarification of brain functions in psychiatric disorders with measurement of hemoglobin concentrations as cerebral blood volume. Twenty medication-naïve children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects participated in the present study after giving consent. The relative concentrations of oxyhemoglobin (oxy-Hb) were measured with frontal probes every 0.1 s during the Stroop color-word task, using 24-channel NIRS machines. During the Stroop color-w

Dysfunctional gamma-band activity during face structural processing in schizophrenia patients.

This study investigated gamma-band activity (GBA) and its phase synchrony in schizophrenia patients viewing human faces. Twenty-five schizophrenia patients were compared with 25 normal controls. Event-related potentials were recorded from all participants while they were viewing emotionally neutral faces. The spectral power and phase synchrony in the frequency band from 30 to 55 Hz were analyzed in midline electrodes (FCz, Cz, CPz, Pz, and POz). Three windows of interest, which showed discernable GBA differences between schizophrenia patients and normal controls, were selected by visual inspec
