One-year follow-up of guided self-help for parents of preschool children with externalizing behavior.

Self-help programs are an effective intervention for parents of children with externalizing behavior. A number of studies have shown that self-administered parent training has positive short-term effects on a child's behavior, but there is little research done on long-term outcomes. This paper reports results from a 1-year follow-up of a randomized controlled prevention trial of self-administered parent training with minimal therapist contact. In the initial prevention trial, we randomly assigned 48 preschool children with elevated levels of externalizing behavior to either a treatment group (

Exploring psychosocial experiences of behavior therapists dealing with children having autism spectrum disorder.

Behavior therapists play an important role in the life of children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Literature reported that child's improvement depends on the quality of therapy they receive. Therefore, the current study aims to explore the psychosocial experiences of behavior therapist working with children having ASD, and suggest the coping strategies which they use to deal with those stressors. The study utilizes a qualitative research design with a phenomenological research approach to explore the psychosocial experiences. For this purpose, the researchers conduct semi-structured i

Selective Mutism: The Fraternal Twin of Childhood Social Phobia.

BACKGROUND: Selective mutism (SM) is an anxiety disorder with a close link to childhood social phobia (SP). Our studies compare behavioral problem profiles in children and adolescents with SM and SP and control groups and assess the comorbidity patterns of SM and SP. METHODS: Participants aged 3-18 years with SM (n = 95), SP (n = 74) and internalizing disorders (INT, n = 46) and a typically developing control group (CG, n = 119) were assessed with the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL); adolescents were additionally assessed with the Youth Self-Report (YSR). Comorbidity was assessed in SM and SP

Genetic and environmental contributions to the inverse association between specific autistic traits and experience seeking in adults.

Autistic traits are characterized by social and communication problems, restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests and activities. The relation between autistic traits and personality characteristics is largely unknown. This study focused on the relation between five specific autistic traits measured with the abridged version of the Autism Spectrum Quotient ("social problems," "preference for routine," "attentional switching difficulties," "imagination impairments," "fascination for numbers and patterns") and Experience Seeking (ES) in a general population sample of

Does being close to someone with gambling problems predict harm? An eight-wave longitudinal study.

According to existing research, problematic gambling indirectly impacts 6-9 others per gambler. These affected others have been found to experience psychological and physical health problems and difficulties with addictive behaviors similar to those faced by gamblers. Studies assessing the relationship between being an affected other to a gambler and experiencing problems have mostly been based on cross-sectional samples, making long-term effects uncertain. To overcome this shortcoming, we used eight-wave longitudinal data (N = 1530, 50 % male) to examine whether being an affected other predic

Molecular Changes Associated with Suicide.

Suicide is a serious global public health problem, with a worrying recent increase in suicide rates in both adolescent and adult populations. However, it is essential to recognize that suicide is preventable. A myriad of factors contributes to an individual's vulnerability to suicide. These factors include various potential causes, from psychiatric disorders to genetic and epigenetic alterations. These changes can induce dysfunctions in crucial systems such as the serotonergic, cannabinoid, and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axes. In addition, early life experiences of abuse can profoundly imp

Guns, Impulsive Angry Behavior, and Mental Disorders: Results from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS-R).

Analyses from the National Comorbidity Study Replication provide the first nationally representative estimates of the co-occurrence of impulsive angry behavior and possessing or carrying a gun among adults with and without certain mental disorders and demographic characteristics. The study found that a large number of individuals in the United States self-report patterns of impulsive angry behavior and also possess firearms at home (8.9%) or carry guns outside the home (1.5%). These data document associations of numerous common mental disorders and combinations of angry behavior with gun acces

Putting theory to the test: examining family context, caregiver motivation, and conflict in the Family Check-Up model.

This study examined contextual factors (caregiver depression, family resources, ethnicity, and initial levels of youth problem behavior) related to the effectiveness of the Family Check-Up (FCU) and evaluated family processes as a mediator of FCU intervention response and adolescent antisocial behavior. We followed a sample of 180 ethnically diverse youths of families who engaged in the FCU intervention. Family data were collected as part of the FCU assessment, and youth data were collected over 4 years, from sixth through ninth grade. Findings indicated that caregiver depression and minority …

An animal model of slot machine gambling: the effect of structural characteristics on response latency and persistence.

Despite the prevalence of problem gamblers and the ethical issues involved in studying gambling behavior with humans, few animal models of gambling have been developed. When designing an animal model it is necessary to determine if behavior in the paradigm is similar to human gambling. In human studies, response latencies following winning trials and near win trials are greater than those following clear losses. Weatherly and Derenne (Anal Gambl Behav 1:79-89, 2007) investigated whether this pattern was found with rats working in an animal analogue of slot machine gambling. They found a simila

Child behavior disorders by age and sex based on item factoring of the revised Bristol Guides.

Standardized teacher observations of 2,527 schoolchildren, selected at random for the revised Bristol Social Adjustment Guides were partitioned into four subsamples consisting of 797 5- to 10-year-old boys, 758 5- to 10-year-old-girls; 508 11- to 15-year-old boys, and 464 11- to 15-year-old girls, respectively. The children were observed by over 900 teachers and rated on 104 indicators of maladaptive behavior. Item scores for each age/sex sample were subjected to first- and second-order factor analysis, with varimax rotation yielding identical second-order models of behavior disorder across ag

Cesarean Section Due to Social Factors Affects Children's Psychology and Behavior: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: Cesarean section (CS) use has reached a frequency well-above what is expected on the basis of obstetric indications. The large increase in CS use, often for non-medical indications, is of concern given the risks for both women and children. Research about the influence of CS on children's behavior is not new, but most studies didn't differentiate CS due to social factors (such as fear of labor pain, auspicious dates, etc.) from CS with medical indications. Medical indications for CS include fetal distress and intrauterine hypoxia, which may also affect the mental and physical healt

An examination of the developmental propensity model of conduct problems.

The present study tested specific hypotheses advanced by the developmental propensity model of the etiology of conduct problems in the Colorado Longitudinal Twin Study, a prospective, longitudinal, genetically informative sample. High negative emotionality, low behavioral inhibition, low concern and high disregard for others, and low cognitive ability assessed during toddlerhood (age 14 to 36 months) were examined as predictors of conduct problems in later childhood and adolescence (age 4 to 17 years). Each hypothesized antisocial propensity dimension predicted conduct problems, but some predi

Compounded effect of early adolescence depressive symptoms and impulsivity on late adolescence gambling: a longitudinal study.

PURPOSE: Depression and impulsivity have been positively correlated to problem gambling, but no study has focused on their combined effects on the onset of problem gambling. This study examined the possible synergistic effect of depressive symptoms and impulsivity in early adolescence on late adolescence gambling behaviors among a longitudinal cohort of 678 students from Baltimore, Maryland. METHODS: The South Oaks Gambling Screen-Revised for Adolescents, Teacher Observation of Classroom Adaptation-Revised, and Baltimore How I Feel-Adolescent Version, were used to assess late adolescence gamb

Evaluating the seriousness of adolescent adjustment reactions.

Adolescents can be expected to inflict some pain on their environment periodically, and complete conformity of an adolescent is not necessarily a sign of mental health. With the exception of some particular behaviors such as a suicide attempt, auditory hallucinations, or a school phobia, one cannot make a prediction about the existence of, or seriousness of, a psychological problem of an adolescent based solely on the occurrence of any one particular antisocial act. Such typical adolescent problems such as stealing, truancy, sexual involvements, and drug use can be either a normal part of adol
