Acute effects of the potent lacrimator o-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS) tear gas.

1. The use of tear gas to control civil unrest is accepted practice by government authorities worldwide. It is rarely used in Hong Kong but during a recent riot at a Vietnamese detention centre large quantities were used and this was cause for some concern. 2. All patients presenting to the British Red Cross Clinic after the incident were seen by one of the authors. To establish if exposure to tear gas had serious effects on the health of the detainees, the case records of the 184 patients with symptoms consistent with CS exposure were reviewed 2 months later. 3. The most common complaints wer

Clinical course and management of extremity frostbite in populations under forced movement in border regions.

BACKGROUND: Frostbite is a serious cold injury that can progress to deep tissue damage and even amputation. The increasing number of cases among refugee and migrant populations who are forcibly mobile in border regions necessitates a detailed evaluation of clinical course and risk factors. This study aimed to assess the demographic characteristics, clinical course, laboratory findings, and treatment outcomes of patients presenting with frostbite-related extremity injuries. METHODS: This retrospective study included a total of 154 patients who presented with a clinically confirmed diagnosis of

Qualitative insights into the acceptability of self-collection for cervical screening amongst under- and never-screened groups in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Since 2022, Australia's National Cervical Screening Program has recommended that anyone eligible for cervical screening should be offered the choice of HPV testing on either a self-collected vaginal sample, or a clinician-collected sample. This choice provides the potential to address some screening barriers for under- and never-screened women and people with a cervix. In this qualitative study we aimed to understand the acceptability of self-collection for individuals from under-and never-screened groups, and its potential to improve equitable access to screening through the natio

Clinical characteristics and predictors of severe pertussis in hospitalized children after the COVID-19 period in Türkiye: a multicenter study.

Pertussis resurged globally, after the relaxation of COVID-19 measures, underscoring its continued relevance as a public health concern, yet data remain limited on the factors associated with severe disease in children. The present study identified risk factors for severe pertussis to improve early recognition and clinical management. This multicenter retrospective study analyzed the demographic, clinical, and laboratory data of the 839 children hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed pertussis across 47 centers in Türkiye (2023-2024). Severe disease was defined as the need for respiratory supp

Developmental Scores and Prevalence of Functional Difficulty Among Preschool Children in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Disability-inclusive early childhood development and education (ECDE) plays a crucial role in ensuring that all children, including those with disabilities, reach their developmental potential. However, there is little data on the prevalence of disability in mainstream ECDE in most low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), or on early learning and developmental outcomes of children with disabilities in these classrooms. METHODS: Data were collected on 1756 children aged 3-9 years enrolling in ECDE at 18 schools in Homa Bay or Turkana Counties, Kenya, at the start of the 2021 and 2

Engaging Diverse African American/Black and Latine Youth and Emerging Adults Living with HIV into Research: Description of Recruitment Strategies and Lessons Learned.

Improving engagement along the HIV care continuum and reducing racial/ethnic disparities are necessary to end the HIV epidemic. Research on African American/Black and Latine (AABL) younger people living with HIV (LWH) is essential to this goal. However, a number of key subgroups are challenging to locate and engage, and are therefore under-represented in research. Primary among these are persons with non-suppressed HIV viral load, severe socioeconomic disadvantage, transgender/gender expansive identities, and refugee/migrant/immigrant populations. Research in community settings is needed to co

A Dedicated Graduate Certificate in Health Equity: A Novel Approach to Increase the Future Physician Capacity to Address Health Inequities.

PROBLEM: Pervasive health inequities require new approaches to medical education to equip future physicians to address unjust disparities in health outcomes. Few curricula exist that focus on development of competencies and leadership skills in health equity, and little is known about the content that should be included. APPROACH: Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine developed and implemented the Graduate Certificate in Health Equity (CHE) to address this educational gap. The CHE proposal was approved in summer 2019, enrollment began in October 201

Mapping of cholera hotspots in Kenya using epidemiologic and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) indicators as part of Kenya's new 2022-2030 cholera elimination plan.

Cholera is an issue of major public health importance. It was first reported in Kenya in 1971, with the country experiencing outbreaks through the years, most recently in 2021. Factors associated with the outbreaks in Kenya include open defecation, population growth with inadequate expansion of safe drinking water and sanitation infrastructure, population movement from neighboring countries, crowded settings such as refugee camps coupled with massive displacement of persons, mass gathering events, and changes in rainfall patterns. The Ministry of Health, together with other ministries and part

Waiting for the wave, but missing the tide: Case studies of climate-related (im)mobility and health.

Climate change amplifies health risks, including through the health impacts of climate-related displacement. Yet diverse mobility responses in a warming world can also provide a pathway for climate change adaptation. This article examines the connections between climatic and environmental change, human mobility and health. It presents case studies across three countries: Fiji, Bangladesh, and Burkina Faso. All case studies used qualitative methods, including semi-structured interviews, storytelling, and group discussions. The Fiji case study focuses on relocation of a coastal village exposed t

High diagnostic yield of endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) in the diagnosis of adolescent pulmonary tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: The microbiological diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (Tb) in a pediatric population is hampered by both low pathogen burden and noncompliance with sputum sampling. Although endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) has been found useful for the evaluation of mediastinal pathologies in adults, for children, sparse data are available. Here, we have evaluated EBUS-TBNA as a diagnostic procedure in children and adolescents with suspected pulmonary Tb. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, we reviewed the charts of unaccompanied refugee minors (

Being a bridge: Swedish antenatal care midwives' encounters with Somali-born women and questions of violence; a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Violence against women is associated with serious health problems, including adverse maternal and child health. Antenatal care (ANC) midwives are increasingly expected to implement the routine of identifying exposure to violence. An increase of Somali born refugee women in Sweden, their reported adverse childbearing health and possible links to violence pose a challenge to the Swedish maternity health care system. Thus, the aim was to explore ways ANC midwives in Sweden work with Somali born women and the questions of exposure to violence. METHODS: Qualitative individual interview

Development of thyroid dysfunction among women with excessive iodine intake--A 3-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVES: Thyroid dysfunction can be a result of excessive iodine intake, which may have adverse health consequences, particularly for women in fertile age. In 2010, we conducted a cross-sectional study among lactating women with excessive iodine intake in the Saharawi refugee camps in Algeria and found a high prevalence of thyroid dysfunction. Three years later, we conducted a follow-up study to monitor the iodine situation and explore whether thyroid dysfunction still was highly prevalent when the women no longer were post-partum. None of the women were treated for hyper- or hypothyroidism

Adjustment disorders after severe life-events in four postconflict settings.

BACKGROUND: The present study explores whether severe life-events are associated with adjustment disorders (AD) by reanalyzing the data of a multisite epidemiological survey (de Jong et al. in Lancet 361:2128-2130, 2003). AD were diagnosed according to the new stress-response-model of AD (Maercker et al. in Psychopathology 40(3):135-146, 2007). METHOD: Data from 3048 persons from four different refugee settings in Ethiopia, Algeria, Gaza, and Cambodia were reanalyzed. Life events were assessed by an adapted version of the Life Events and Social History Interview (Mollica et al. in Am J Psychi

Gender-based violence experienced by women seeking asylum in the United State: A lifetime of multiple traumas inflicted by multiple perpetrators.

Estimates by the World Health Organization indicate that 1 in 3 women-more than one billion people worldwide-have experienced some form of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Violence Against Women (VAW) is a prominent subset of GBV, defined by the United Nations as any act "that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life." VAW can include verbal harassment, physical abuse, sexual abuse, honor killing, and femicide and can occ

Sexual and reproductive healthcare for women asylum seekers in Switzerland: a multi-method evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Forced migration significantly endangers health. Women face numerous health risks, including sexual violence, lack of contraception, sexually transmitted disease, and adverse perinatal outcomes. Therefore, sexual and reproductive healthcare is a significant aspect of women asylum seekers' health. Even when healthcare costs of asylum seekers are covered by the government, there may be strong barriers to healthcare access and specific needs may be addressed inadequately. The study's objectives were a) to assess the accommodation and healthcare services provided to women asylum seeker
