OBJECTIVE: To discuss effective surgical methods for the treatment of glossopharyngeal neuralgia.
METHODS: During 1986 - 1998, 21 patients with glossopharyngeal neuralgia were treated microsurgically. Of whom, 5 patients were treated by microvascular decompression (MVD), 4 by MVD combined with rhizotomy of glossopharyngeal nerve root and upper 1st to 2nd rootlets of vagus nerve root, and 12 by rhizotomy of glossopharyngeal nerve root and upper 1st to 2nd rootlets of vagus nerve root.

There were examined 79 patients, operated on for duodenal ulcer disease. Before the operation the Helicobacter pylori (HP) dissemination of stomach and duodenum of significant degree was diagnosed in 51.9%, mild degree--in 34.2% and of a nonsignificant one--in 13.9% of patients. After the operation the HP dissemination of stomach and duodenum had persisted.

The article presents results of treatment of bleeding gastroduodenal ulcers in 1010 patients for 23 years. The active temporizing policy during the first 8 years resulted in 8.1% lethality while the active methods gave 8.24% lethality in six times greater number of patients. In the active policy urgent and emergency operations were performed on 43.6% of the patients with postoperative lethality 12.9%. Lethality among non-operated patients was 4.6%. The authors had under observation 73 patients who underwent various antireflux operations with poor results, 68 of them were subjected to repeated interventions, fundoplication in most cases. The causes of failure of primary and repeated antireflux operations are analysed, the indications for and the techniques of reconstructive interventions are discussed. It is emphasized that patients with hiatal hernia and reflux esophagitis must be concentrated in specialized medical institutions.

To assess the incidence of early, severe, and life-threatening complications demanding early reintervention following surgery for duodenal ulcer--initial or reoperative--2579 patients who underwent elective surgery, 2472 as an initial approach and 107 as a reintervention, are presented in this study. The innervation of the carotid body in the cat was studied by means of light- and electron-microscopic techniques. Sinus nerve resection, glossopharyngeal resection, bilateral cervical sympathectomy, excisions of two nerves, and injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OH-DA) were performed in different groups of animals. It was found that resection of the sinus nerve produces a rapid phase of degeneration of intralobular fibers and synaptic boutons, followed by a reinnervation with a progressive reappearance of these elements. This reinnervation is retarded by sympathectomy and prevented by 6-OH-DA.
