PURPOSE: To report the findings of Acanthamoeba endophthalmitis in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
METHODS: A 35-year-old man with AIDS and Acanthamoeba infection of the skin and lungs was treated for a granulomatous uveitis in the left eye.
RESULTS: The left eye developed mutton-fat keratic precipitates, iris granulomas, cataract, hypotony, and choroidal infiltrates. Aqueous and vitreous specimens were positive for Acanthamoeba cysts. Topical and systemic antiamebic medications decreased the inflammation but failed to control the infection.
CONCLUSIONS: Acanthamoe

The imaging findings in a case of panamebic meningoencephalitis and in a case of granulomatous amebic encephalitis, two rare infections of the central nervous system caused by amebae, are presented and the world literature is reviewed. The brain CT findings in panamebic meningoencephalitis are nonspecific; our case showed diffuse edema. In the case of granulomatous amebic encephalitis, there was evidence of large arterial occlusions and MR demonstration of spinal cord infarctions.

Acanthamoeba infection of the cornea is an entity now recognized with increasing frequency. We saw two cases of Acanthamoeba sclerokeratitis in contact lens wearers in whom scleritis (anterior and posterior) played a central role in the clinical course of the disease. Scleritis is probably a more common component of Acanthamoeba infection than has generally been acknowledged. Posterior scleritis has not, to our knowledge, been reported previously in this disorder. The clinical diagnosis of Acanthamoeba infection has often been missed due to lack of a definition of the historical and clinical c

Acute diarrheal illness (illness of less than two weeks' duration) accounts for numerous out-patient health care visits. This article provides an overview of the most common causes of acute diarrhea and presents a comprehensive approach to patient evaluation, diagnosis and management. A detailed outline of bacterial, viral, parasitic and travelers' diarrheal disorders is presented. Dysentery (blood and mucus in the stool) represents an additional challenge to the health care provider. Salient historical data, physical assessment and laboratory considerations are reviewed. Management objectives

This prospective evaluation of patients presenting with mucoid bloody diarrhea and suspected idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease demonstrated a 38% incidence of infectious colitides. The infectious agents detected were Campylobacter, Salmonella, Shigella, Amoeba, and Clostridium difficile. An increased awareness and the utilization of selective culture media should allow the clinician to definitively diagnose patients who present with signs and symptoms suggestive of idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease.

Parkia biglobosa (Jacq.) R. Br. (Fabaceae) is a widely distributed tree, used in traditional medicine to treat amebiasis, hookworm infection, ascariasis, asthma, sterility, dental pain, headaches, cardiac disorders, and epilepsy. To date, no study on the effect of an aqueous extract of P. biglobosa on epileptogenesis and associated neuropsychiatric disorders has been undertaken. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate antiepileptogenic-, antiamnesic-, and anxiolytic-like effects of an aqueous extract of P. biglobosa using pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced kindling in mice. Animals were divid…

BACKGROUND: The clinical features of amoebic colitis resemble those of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and therefore the risk of misdiagno … he exudates by histological examination is the vital. Sometimes a negative biopsy does not rule out amebiasis, repeated biopsies may be needed to make the diagnosis.

Systemic infection with Acanthamoeba spp. can induce inflammatory responses within the visual axis, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms in the optic nerve remain poorly understood. The aim of the study was to determine the gene expression of Nlrp3 (encoding NOD-, LRP- and pyrin domain-containing protein 3, NLRP3), Ptgs2 (encoding cyclooxygenase-2, COX-2), Rela (encoding nuclear factor kappa B, NF-κB), and several cytokines in the optic nerve of mice during disseminated infection with Acanthamoeba sp. (T16 genotype) under various immunological conditions. In immunocompetent mice, Ptgs2 and

Naegleria fowleri is a free-living amoeba that can cause primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a very serious infection of the central nervous system. Early diagnosis of PAM is challenging, and the condition is almost always fatal. In this study, we conducted 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) analysis using N. fowleri trophozoite lysates and conditioned media to identify preferentially secreted proteins. As a result of the 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis analysis, 1 protein was found to increase, 5 proteins were found to decrease, 3 proteins showed a qualitative increase, and 15 p

It is about half a century since free-living amoebae were recognized as pathogenic organisms, but there is still much we should learn about these rare fatal human infectious agents. A recently introduced causative agent of granulomatous amoebic encephalitis, Balamuthia mandrillaris, has been reported in a limited number of countries around the world. A 3-year-old girl was referred to our tertiary hospital because of inability to establish a proper diagnosis. She had been experiencing neurologic complaints including ataxia, altered level of consciousness, dizziness, seizure, and left-sided hemi

Naegleria fowleri (N. fowleri) causes primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rapidly fatal disease of the central nervous system. N. fowleri can exist in cyst, flagellate or amoebic forms, depending on environmental conditions. The amoebic form can invade the brain following introduction into the nasal passages. When applied intranasally to a mouse model, cultured N. fowleri amoebae exhibit low virulence. However, upon serial passage in mouse brain, the amoebae acquire a highly virulent state. In the present study, a proteomics approach was applied to the identification of N. fowleri amoeba pr

Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis due to free living amoeba, also called 'brain eating amoeba', Naegleria fowleri, was detected in retroviral disease patient of 40 years who has history of using well water. Patient was admitted with severe headache, fever intermittent, nausea, vomiting and slurring of speech. CT scan and MRI scan findings were normal. CSF examination showed increased protein, low sugar and predominant lymphocytes. CSF was negative for cryptococcal antigen but wet mount preparation showed highly motile free living amoeba Naegleria fowleri. Patient was put on Amphotericin B, M
