Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties and therapeutic use of bunazosin in hypertension. A review.

Bunazosin (CAS 52712-76-2), a quinazoline derivative, selectively blocks alpha1-receptors. In addition to its potent antihypertensive property, beneficial effects on lipid metabolism, glucose metabolism, vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, it can be used in the presence of concomitant diseases, such as obstructive bronchitis, chronic renal insufficiency, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, and diabetes mellitus. In its extended-release formulation (bunazosin retard), it is generally a well-tolerated alpha1-blocker when compared to other agents in its class. Pharmacokinetic studies in

The Relationship of Built Environment to Health-Related Behaviors and Health Outcomes in Elderly Community Residents in a Middle Income Country.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the impact of the built environment (BE) on health behaviours and health outcomes in middle income countries. This study examines associations between self-assessed characteristics of the home and neighbourhood environment and health-related behaviours and health outcomes in an elderly population in Brazil. DESIGN AND METHODS: In a community sample of 6963 community dwellers 60 years old and older living in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, associations between self-reported BE conditions and health behaviours and health outcomes were assessed using

Arsenicosis: review of recent advances.

Human health in the past and presently is influenced by the amounts and proportion of chemical elements to which humans have been exposed. Arsenic, as a therapeutic agent was known to ancient Greeks and Romans. Ehrlick introduced organic arsenicals as anti linetic agents but with advent of penicillin these have nearly become obsolete. Once considered toxic, harmful to humans, arsenic is now considered an essential ultra trace element at least in animals. Now the impact of arsenic on health is more from industrial and environmental than medicinal exposure. This article reviews human exposure to

[Various sides of influenza, part I--structure, replication, changeability of influenza viruses, clinical course of the disease, immunological response and laboratory diagnostics].

Influenza viruses represent Orthomyxoviridae family. Spherical virions are 80-120 nm in diameter and have two-layer lipid envelope. The following proteins are coded by 8 or 7 segments of the single-stranded RNA: nucleoprotein (NP), polymerase PB2, PB1 and PA, member protein--M1 and M2, glycoproteins--hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). HA and NA form spikes on the virion surface. On the basis of antigenic differences there are distinguished three types of influenza virus-A, B and C. Besides, influenza A viruses occur in different subtypes, depending on the features of HA and NA. One of

Cefuroxime axetil: an updated review of its use in the management of bacterial infections.

UNLABELLED: Cefuroxime axetil, a prodrug of the cephalosporin cefuroxime, has proven in vitro antibacterial activity against several gram-positive and gram-negative organisms, including those most frequently associated with various common community-acquired infections. In numerous randomised, controlled trials, 5 to 10 days' treatment with oral cefuroxime axetil (250 or 500 mg twice daily) was an effective treatment in patients with upper (URTI) and lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) as assessed by clinical and bacteriological criteria. The drug was as effective as several other cephalo

Grepafloxacin: an overview of antibacterial activity, pharmacokinetics, clinical efficacy and safety.

The treatment of respiratory tract infection is the most common reason for antibiotic prescribing. However, therapeutic options are diminishing as antibiotic resistance to penicillins and macrolides in key respiratory pathogens is increasing. As resistance increases, there are parallel rises in the number of treatment failures and the total cost of infection management. New generation broad-spectrum fluoroquinolones, such as grepafloxacin, have recently been recommended as a first-line treatment option in guidelines for lower respiratory tract infection. Grepafloxacin is an oral fluoroquinolon

Azithromycin. A review of its antimicrobial activity, pharmacokinetic properties and clinical efficacy.

Azithromycin is an acid stable orally administered macrolide antimicrobial drug, structurally related to erythromycin, with a similar spectrum of antimicrobial activity. Azithromycin is marginally less active than erythromycin in vitro against Gram-positive organisms, although this is of doubtful clinical significance as susceptibility concentrations fall within the range of achievable tissue azithromycin concentrations. In contrast, azithromycin appears to be more active than erythromycin against many Gram-negative pathogens and several other pathogens, notably Haemophilus influenzae, H. para

Nitrosative stress in the bronchial mucosa of severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: Reactive nitrogen species, formed via the reaction of nitric oxide (NO) with superoxide anion and via (myelo)peroxidase-dependent oxidation of NO(2)(-), have potent proinflammatory and oxidizing actions. Reactive nitrogen species formation and nitrosative stress are potentially involved in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) pathogenesis. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the expression of markers of nitrosative stress, including nitrotyrosine (NT), inducible NO synthase (iNOS), endothelial NO synthase (eNOS), myeloperoxidase (MPO), and xanthine oxidase (XO) in bronchial biopsie

Diagnosis of bronchopulmonary infections by quantification of microflora.

The quantification of bacteria and fungi in sputum or bronchoaspirate is of clinical value for the diagnosis of respiratory tract infections. We have developed an easy method to count the micro-organisms in patients with respiratory tract infections. This consists of the quantification of micro-organisms by subsequent streakings of a calibrated loop on agar. The correlation between microbiological quantitative data and the clinical status of patients with lower respiratory tract infections is discussed. The data seem to indicate that certain bacteria present in sputum or bronchoaspirate above

Cotton dust and across-shift change in FEV1 as predictors of annual change in FEV1.

In this report of a 5-yr longitudinal study of workers employed at six cotton textile mills, exposure and across-shift FEV1 change were evaluated as possible predictors of the annual change in FEV1 for yarn manufacturing workers. A total of 611 workers had three repeatable spirometric tests, over at least 3 yr, and at least one (average of three) across-shift test, while always working the same shift. The "same shift" criterion controlled for the effect of diurnal variation. Average exposure was determined from measures of lint-free elutriated cotton dust in combination with job histories. Thi
