Ultrasonographic features of nonvascular complications of hyaluronic acid fillers: a retrospective study at a reference center for dermatologic ultrasonography.

Hyaluronic acid filler injections have been associated with early, temporary, and delayed-onset complications. High-resolution ultrasound with Doppler analysis has been increasingly used to detect and identify such complications. We comprehensively describe the most common ultrasonographic findings of nonvascular complications associated with hyaluronic acid filler injections. This retrospective, cross-sectional, observational study was conducted at a reference center for dermatologic ultrasound in Bogotá, Colombia. Ultrasound reports documented the ultrasonographic findings of nonvascular com

Inflammasome activation occurs in CD4+ and CD8+ T cells during graft-versus-host disease.

A severe complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), a reaction that occurs following the transfer of donor immune cells (the graft) into an allogeneic host. Transplanted cells recognize host alloantigens as foreign, resulting in the activation of donor T cells and migration of these pathological cells into host tissues. In this study, we found that caspase-1 is activated in alloreactive murine and human CD4+ and CD8+ T cells early during acute GvHD (aGvHD). The presence of inflammasome-bound active caspase-1 (p33) and ASC-speck formation confir

In-vitro and in-vivo biocompatibility of dECM-alginate as a promising candidate in cell delivery for kidney regeneration.

In this study, kidney decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) and alginate (ALG) hybrid injectable hydrogel, with the purpose of delivering progenitor cells for tissue engineering, were prepared by using a physical crosslinking method in a CaCl2 solution with high porosity for the exchange of nutrition and waste. In addition, the physical appearance and surface morphology of the hydrogel were investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The functional groups of the dECM/ALG xerogels was examined via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The biocompatibility

Mesenchymal stem cells associated with porous chitosan-gelatin scaffold: a potential strategy for alveolar bone regeneration.

Tissue engineering has emerged as a novel treatment for replacement of lost bone tissue. This study evaluated the effects of a chitosan-gelatin scaffold seeded with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) in the healing process of tooth sockets in rats. BMMSCs isolated from transgenic rats expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) were expanded and seeded on a chitosan-gelatin scaffold. These constructs were cultured for three days and characterized by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS). Receptor rats received the implant in the left so

A monocyte-leptin-angiogenesis pathway critical for repair post-infection.

During infection, inflammatory monocytes are thought to be key for bacterial eradication, but this is hard to reconcile with the large numbers of neutrophils that are recruited for each monocyte that migrates to the afflicted tissue, and the much more robust microbicidal functions of the neutrophils. However, unlike neutrophils, monocytes have the capacity to convert to situationally specific macrophages that may have critical functions beyond infection control1,2. Here, using a foreign body coated with Staphylococcus aureus and imaging over time from cutaneous infection to wound resolution, w

Ophthalmia nodosa secondary to intraocular, white-marked tussock caterpillar setae (Orgyia leucostigma) in a 15-year-old.

A 15-year-old female presented to the emergency department with a 1-day history of pain and swelling of her right eye following ocular contact with a caterpillar. Caterpillars of the white-marked tussock moth and other related species possess hairlike structures called setae, with angled barbs along their length, allowing them to travel linearly upon penetration of an enemy, resisting backward movement and becoming very difficult to extract once imbedded. When these fine, pointed hairs contact the surface of the eye, they can easily migrate in, eliciting movement of the globe, blinking, and ru

Cellular chemotaxis induced by wear particles from joint replacements.

The destruction of bone around joint replacements (periprosthetic osteolysis) is an adverse biological response associated with the generation of excessive wear particles. Wear debris from the materials used for joint replacements stimulate a chronic inflammatory and foreign body reaction that leads to increased osteoclast differentiation and maturation, and decreased bone formation. Wear debris induces both local and systemic trafficking of inflammatory cells to the site of particle generation. Recent studies have shown that this effect is mediated primarily by chemotactic cytokines (chemokin

Vaccine delivery by zwitterionic polysaccharide-based hydrogel microparticles showing enhanced immunogenicity and suppressed foreign body responses.

The controlled release of antigens from injectable depots has been actively pursued to achieve long-lasting immune responses in vaccine development. Nonetheless, subcutaneous depots are often susceptible to foreign body responses (FBRs) dominated by macrophage clearance and fibrotic encapsulation, resulting in limited antigen delivery to target dendritic cells (DCs) that bridge innate and adaptive immunity. Here, we aim to develop a long-term antigen depot that can bypass FBR and engage DCs to mature and migrate to lymph nodes to activate antigen-specific T-cells. Leveraging the immunomodulato

The modified lateral window technique for retrieving root stumps from the maxillary sinus: Case report.

RATIONALE: Tooth extraction is a common surgical procedure in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Extraction of the upper molar teeth may result in root fracture for anatomical reasons, leading to the migration of fractured roots into the maxillary sinus. This can cause serious complications such as oroantral fistula, sinusitis, cellulitis, and subdural abscesses. To mitigate the risk of these complications, it is important to promptly remove the root stumps from the maxillary sinus and preserve alveolar bone for subsequent prosthetic rehabilitation. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 30-year-old male patient p

Incidence, risk factors and endoscopic retrieval of proximally migrated pancreatic stents: 25 years of experience in a high-volume center - a case controlled study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Proximal migration is one of the complications after pancreatic stenting. This study aims to determine the incidence, risk factors and endoscopic treatment of proximally migrated pancreatic stents. METHODS: A retrospective search of all the endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) records was conducted from 1997 to 2022 in our tertiary center. Proximal migration of the pancreatic stent was defined as when the stent shifted completely into the pancreatic duct and the distal end of the stent was no longer visible at the duodenal papilla. RESULTS: A total of 901

Usefulness of newly modified fully covered metallic stent of 12 mm in diameter and anti-migration feature for periampullary malignant biliary strictures: Comparison with conventional standard metal stent.

BACKGROUNDS: Fully covered self-expandable metal stent (FCSEMS) are preferred for distal malignant biliary stricture (MBS). However, stent migration is a major adverse event of FCSEMS, especially for far distal MBS. We evaluated the usefulness of newly modified FCSEMS (M-FCSEMS) having 12 mm in diameter and anti-migration feature to minimize stent migration compared with the conventional FCSEMS (C-FCSEMS). METHODS: Total 102 patients were enrolled between January 2015 and September 2017 in this prospective comparative study; 50 were allocated to the M-FCSEMS group and 52 to the C-FCSEMS group
