Comparative Snake Venom Analysis for Facilitating Wildlife Forensics: A Pilot Study.

Confirm and authentic identification of species is required for the implementation of wildlife laws in cases of illegal trafficking of snake venoms. Illegally trafficked snake venom might be misidentified with other drugs of abuse, and sometimes, the species of venom-yielding snake cannot be verified. Snake venoms from medically important snake species, Naja naja and Daboia russelii, were procured from Irula Snake Catcher's Society, Tamil Nadu, India. Comparative analyses of both venoms were carried out using SDS-PAGE, LC-MS/MS, ICP-MS, and mtDNA analysis. The protein concentration of Naja naj

Recent Progress in Genome Editing for Gene Therapy Applications: The French Perspective.

Recent advances in genome editing tools, especially novel developments in the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats associated to Cas9 nucleases (CRISPR/Cas9)-derived editing machinery, have revolutionized not only basic science but, importantly, also the gene therapy field. Their flexibility and ability to introduce precise modifications in the genome to disrupt or correct genes or insert expression cassettes in safe harbors in the genome underline their potential applications as a medicine of the future to cure many genetic diseases. In this review, we give an overview of

Short Versus Long Timing of Flushing of Totally Implantable Venous Access Devices When Not Used Routinely: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Flushing and locking of totally implantable venous access devices (TIVADs) is recommended to maintain their patency when not in use. Although manufacturers' recommendations indicate monthly access for TIVAD maintenance, there is a tendency in real life to prolong this interval. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of prolonged versus short flushing and locking intervals to prevent TIVAD occlusions in adults with cancer. METHODS: A systematic search was carried out in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Web of Science. Two reviewers independently selected studies, assessed quality, an

Developing a new national MDMA policy: Results of a multi-decision multi-criterion decision analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ecstasy (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)) has a relatively low harm and low dependence liability but is scheduled on List I of the Dutch Opium Act ('hard drugs'). Concerns surrounding increasing MDMA-related criminality coupled with the possibly inappropriate scheduling of MDMA initiated a debate to revise the current Dutch ecstasy policy. METHODS: An interdisciplinary group of 18 experts on health, social harms and drug criminality and law enforcement reformulated the science-based Dutch MDMA policy using multi-decision multi-criterion decision analysis (MD-MCDA). Ototoxicity: A review of South African studies.

BACKGROUND: Ototoxicity is damage to cells in the inner ear after administering a toxic drug, with a resultant hearing loss. Drugs used to treat illnesses such as cancer, tuberculosis, human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV) and infections are potentially ototoxic. South Africa has one of the highest rates of HIV and tuberculosis, and thus a potentially greater degree of the population is being affected by hearing loss from the medications used to treat these illnesses. METHODS: To determine the current status of research in ototoxicity, a systematic literature review was carried out to determine

Basic principles of viscoelastic testing.

BACKGROUND: Viscoelastic testing is a method of hemostatic analysis that provides a real-time, holistic view of ex vivo clotting. It allows for examination of both cellular and plasma protein contributions to clotting including platelet number and function, fibrin(ogen) function, and coagulation factor function. The method assesses physical clot properties during the transition of blood from a liquid to a gel state, either by measurement of clot shear modulus using physical force transduction or by measurement of clot resonance frequency using sonometric interrogation. Results are reported in

Perspective: Understanding the Intersection of Climate/Environmental Change, Health, Agriculture, and Improved Nutrition - A Case Study: Type 2 Diabetes.

Efforts to promote health through improved diet and nutrition demand an appreciation of the nutritional ecology that accounts for the intersection of agriculture, food systems, health, disease and a changing environment. The complexity and implications of this ecology is exemplified by current trends and efforts to address nutrition-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs), most prominently type 2 diabetes. The global prevalence of type 2 diabetes continues to rise unabated. Of particular concern is how to address the unhealthy dietary patterns that are contributing to this pandemic in a chang

Catch-Up Growth in Full-Term Small for Gestational Age Infants: A Systematic Review.

This is the first systematic review to examine the global prevalence of catch-up growth (CUG) in small for gestational age (SGA) infants who were born at full term (FT). Size at birth and subsequent growth is an important indicator of neonatal and adult health. Globally, 16% of infants are SGA at birth, ranging from 7% in industrialized countries to 41.5% in South Asia. SGA infants are at increased risk for negative developmental and adult health outcomes. Some achieve CUG but others do not. CUG has immediate and late health implications especially in low- and middle-income countries. This sys

Spinal cord stimulation in chronic pain: evidence and theory for mechanisms of action.

Well-established in the field of bioelectronic medicine, Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) offers an implantable, non-pharmacologic treatment for patients with intractable chronic pain conditions. Chronic pain is a widely heterogenous syndrome with regard to both pathophysiology and the resultant phenotype. Despite advances in our understanding of SCS-mediated antinociception, there still exists limited evidence clarifying the pathways recruited when patterned electric pulses are applied to the epidural space. The rapid clinical implementation of novel SCS methods including burst, high frequency a
