AIMS: To evaluate the risk of missing a malignancy in surgical specimens following hysterectomy for uterine prolapse if routine pathological examination is not performed. Additionally, information on the risk of missing an hitherto unsuspected malignancy if uterine preservation is the preferred management option will be provided.

Computed tomographic scans were reviewed in 46 patients with documented omental pathology to analyze the radiographic characteristics of benign and malignant disease. Since 1981, 12 patients with epidural spinal cord compression from metastatic carcinoma have been treated surgically by a modified costotransversectomy approach for anterolateral decompression. Before surgery, all patients had received dexamethasone, and had deteriorated neurologically despite radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or steroid therapy. Forty-six patients with primary soft tissue sarcomas underwent computed tomographic evaluation. Among 21 patients with retroperitoneal sarcomas, computed tomography was misleading in three patients and accurate and helpful in 18 patients.
