Nanotechnology as a therapeutic strategy to prevent neuropsychomotor alterations associated with hypercholesterolemia.

Hypercholesterolemia has been linked to neurodegenerative disease development. Previously others and we demonstrated that high levels of pla … ciated with enhanced liver tumor necrosis factor- α (TNF-α), BBB dysfunction in the hippocampus and olfactory bulb, memory impairment, cataleptic posture, and depressive-like behavior. Notably, GNPs administration attenuated liver inflammation, BBB dysfunction, and improved behavioral and memory deficits in hypercholesterolemic mice. Also, GNPs increased mitocho …

Disruption of cellular proteostasis by H1N1 influenza A virus causes α-synuclein aggregation.

Neurodegenerative diseases feature specific misfolded or misassembled proteins associated with neurotoxicity. The precise mechanisms by whic … ic flux. In addition, α-synuclein aggregates appeared in infected cell populations connected to the olfactory bulbs following intranasal instillation of H1N1 in Rag knockout mice. We propose that H1N1 virus replication in neuronal cells can induce seeds of aggregated α-synuclein or DISC1 that may be able to initiate further detrimental downstream events and shou …

Cellular Response of Ventricular-Subventricular Neural Progenitor/Stem Cells to Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury and Their Enhanced Neurogenesis.

PURPOSE: To elucidate the brain's intrinsic response to injury, we tracked the response of neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs) located in v … ilateral to the lesion while injury reduced the number of newly-born cells reaching the ipsilateral olfactory bulb, which is the programmed destination of migratory V-SVZ NSPCs in the intact brain. These newly-born cells were directed from this pathway towards the lesions. HI significantly increased the number of newly-born cells in the cortex and striatum by th …

Global and age-related neuroanatomical abnormalities in a Pax6-deficient mouse model of aniridia suggests a role for Pax6 in adult structural neuroplasticity.

PAX6 encodes a highly conserved transcription factor necessary for normal development of the eyes and central nervous system. Heterozygous l … ain regions of the the Pax6SeyNeu/+ mouse compared to wild-type including genotype- and age-related olfactory bulb differences, age-related cerebellum differences, and genotype-related eye differences. We also show alterations in thickness of major interhemispheric commissures, particularly those anteriorly located within the brain including the optic chiasm, co …

Spinal cord involvement in Lewy body-related α-synucleinopathies.

Context: Lewy body (LB)-related α-synucleinopathy (LBAS) is the neuropathological hallmark of several neurodegenerative diseases such as Par … t of the medullary reticular formation and locus ceruleus in the brainstem but not with that in the olfactory bulb and amygdala. The intermediolateral columns of the thoracic and sacral cord are the most frequently and severely affected region of the spinal cord. LBAS occurs in centrally projecting spinal cord neurons integrating pain, in particular from lower b …

Continued Growth of the Central Nervous System without Mandatory Addition of Neurons in the Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus).

It is generally believed that animals with larger bodies require larger brains, composed of more neurons. Across mammalian species, there is … nging between 0.1 and 0.3. In contrast, numbers of neurons scale with body mass in the spinal cord, olfactory bulb, cerebellum and telencephalon, with exponents of between 0.08 and 0.20, but not in the brainstem and diencephalon, the brain structures that receive inputs and send outputs to the growing body. Densities of both neurons and non-neurons decrease with …

Regulation of endogenous neural stem/progenitor cells for neural repair-factors that promote neurogenesis and gliogenesis in the normal and damaged brain.

Neural stem/precursor cells in the adult brain reside in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricles and the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the dentate gyrus in the hippocampus. These cells primarily generate neuroblasts that normally migrate to the olfactory bulb (OB) and the dentate granule cell layer respectively. Following brain damage, such as traumatic brain injury, ischemic stroke or in degenerative disease models, neural precursor cells from the SVZ in particular, can migrate from their normal route along the rostral migratory stream (RMS) to the site of neural damage. This neur…

Unusual presentation of Kallmannn syndrome with contiguous gene deletion in three siblings of a family.

We report the case of 3 brothers aged 34, 24, and 22 years, unmarried, who presented to our endocrinology clinic with absence of secondary sexual characters. There was no such history in other siblings, but their maternal uncle had similar complaints. On examination, all 3 had pre-pubertal appearance, voice, and genitalia along with anosmia and bimanual synkinesia. Cryptorchidism was noticed in 2 while third person had small hypoplastic testes. It was also noted that all 3 patients had icthyosis mainly involving trunk, back, and limbs. The hormonal assays were consistent with isolated hypogona

Adeno-associated viral vector serotypes 1 and 5 targeted to the neonatal rat and pig striatum induce widespread transgene expression in the forebrain.

Viral vector-mediated gene transfer has emerged as a powerful means to target transgene expression in the central nervous system. Here we ch … pression compared to rAAV1. In neonatal rats, rAAV5 also transduced several other areas such as the olfactory bulbs, hippocampus, and septum. Phenotypic analysis of the GFP-positive cells, performed using immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy, showed that most of the GFP-positive cells by either serotype were NeuN-positive neuronal profiles. The rAAV5 vec …

Age-dependent time course of cerebral brain-derived neurotrophic factor, nerve growth factor, and neurotrophin-3 in APP23 transgenic mice.

Mutations in the gene LRRK2 encoding dardarin (PARK8) cause familial Parkinson's disease: clinical, pathological, olfactory and functional imaging and genetic data.

Ontogenetic development and neuroanatomical localization of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) in the brain and pituitary gland of pejerrey fish Odontesthes bonariensis.

The presence and distribution of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) were studied by immunocytochemistry in adult and developing pejerrey fish, Odontesthes bonariensis (Atheriniformes). A few perikarya and fibers with immunoreactivity to GHRH (ir-GHRH) were identified in the olfactory bulbs at hatching. One week later, scattered ir-GHRH cell bodies were observed in the preoptic area and some fibers were detected entering the pituitary gland. Isolated ir-GHRH perikarya were revealed in the hypothalamus and in the medulla oblongata (MO) 3 weeks after hatching. Seven weeks after hatching, ir-…
