Visual and vestibular determinants of the translational vestibulo-ocular reflex.

Prior studies indicate that the human translational vestibulo-ocular reflex (tVOR) generates eye rotations approximately half the magnitude required to keep the line of sight pointed at a stationary object--a compensation ratio (CR) of ∼0.5. We asked whether changes of visual or vestibular stimuli could increase the CR of tVOR. First, subjects viewed their environment through an optical device that required eye movements to increase by ∼50% to maintain fixation of a stationary visual target. During vertical translation, eye movements did increase, but tVOR CR remained at ∼0.5. Second, subjects

Light sheet direct Raman imaging technique for observation of mixing of solvents.

The light sheet direct Raman (LSDR) imaging technique is used to obtain wide scope, simultaneous images of samples emitting Raman scattered light, without mapping their point-to-point Raman scattering intensities. A prototype system consisting of a background-free electronically tuned Ti:sapphire laser (BF-ETL), band-pass (BP) filters, and a charge-coupled device (CCD) detector is developed in the present study. The LS excitation method enables us to obtain a wide field of Raman view. The BF-ETL allows us to obtain direct Raman images with multiple Raman bands without the need for rearranging

The spectrum of neuromyelitis optica.

Neuromyelitis optica (also known as Devic's disease) is an idiopathic, severe, demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that preferentially affects the optic nerve and spinal cord. Neuromyelitis optica has a worldwide distribution, poor prognosis, and has long been thought of as a variant of multiple sclerosis; however, clinical, laboratory, immunological, and pathological characteristics that distinguish it from multiple sclerosis are now recognised. The presence of a highly specific serum autoantibody marker (NMO-IgG) further differentiates neuromyelitis optica from multiple scler

Performance of an in-plane detection cell with integrated waveguides for UV/Vis absorbance measurements on microfluidic separation devices.

A microfluidic device with integrated waveguides and a long path length detection cell for UV/Vis absorbance detection is presented. The 750 microm U-cell detection geometry was evaluated in terms of its optical performance as well as its influence on efficiency for electrophoretic separations in the microdevice. Stray light was found to have a strong effect on both, the sensitivity of the detection and the available linear range. The long path length U-cell showed a 9 times higher sensitivity when compared to a conventional capillary electrophoresis (CE) system with a 75 microm inner diameter

A clinical evaluation of the Codman MicroSensor for intracranial pressure monitoring.

The strain-gauge Codman MicroSensor intracranial pressure (ICP) transducer has shown consistently good laboratory performance. To assess the practical performance of the system in patients following acute brain injury, 10 patients were fitted with a MicroSensor and a second ICP monitor. In five cases this was a fibre-optic transducer and in five cases an intraventricular fluid-filled device. Paired ICP values were recorded every 5 min. ICP values ranged from 0 to 31 mmHg. Altman-Bland plots showed that individual readings could differ by as much as 9 mmHg. Further analysis showed that much of

Neuromyelitis optica (Devic's disease) report of one case.

Neuromyelitis optica also named Devic's disease is an acute combined optic neuritis and transverse myelitis. It is thought to be a variant of multiple sclerosis, but its clinical presentation probably has only one attack without further recurrence and exacerbation. We present a 12-year-old girl who suffered from sudden onset of lower extremeties weakness, sensory loss and blurred vision after a prodromal URI symptom. CSF examination showed mild pleocytosis, elevated immunoglobulins, mild elevation of protein concentration. No oligoclonal band was detected. Serum virology showed high titer of a

Label-free fluorescence lifetime imaging for rapid discrimination of high-grade prostate cancer in fresh biopsy cores: a feasibility study.

SIGNIFICANCE: Prostate biopsy remains the gold standard for prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis and treatment planning. However, current techniques suffer from low cancer detection rates, with most biopsy cores sampling benign tissue, leading to undergrading and repeat procedures. Label-free fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIm) offers a potential solution by enabling real-time discrimination between malignant and benign tissue during biopsy collection, potentially reducing both the number of cores required and the repeat biopsy rates. AIM: This pilot study evaluates the feasibility of label-free

In-Vivo Optical Spectroscopy (INVOS) as a Prognostic Tool for Peripheral Artery Disease During Endovascular Intervention: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD), including intermittent claudication (IC) or critical limb ischemia (CLI), can be treated with endovascular revascularization; however, tools for intraoperative prognostication are limited. The In-Vivo Optical Spectroscopy (INVOS) system, a non-invasive near-infrared spectroscopy device, measures tissue oxygenation. This pilot study aims to investigate the use of INVOS during endovascular surgery for PAD as a prognostic tool for endovascular PAD treatment. This study is intended as a feasibility and hypothesis-generating pilot, rather than one de

Protocol to test the efficacy and safety of frequent applications of skin electrical stimulation for Leber hereditary optic neuropathy: a single-arm, open-label, non-randomised prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is an acute or subacute inherited optic neuropathy caused by mitochondrial mutations. More than 90% of patients with LHON have one of three point mutations (ie, G3460A, G11778A and T14484C). We previously reported that a 12-week session of skin electrical stimulation (SES) with a 2-week interval significantly improved visual acuity and field tests 1 week after the last stimulation and without adverse effects in 10 cases of LHON carrying the mt DNA G11778A mutation. In the present study, we will examine the magnitude and persistence of the

Management of myopia: a mini-review.

BACKGROUND: Myopia is becoming more common in many populations worldwide, particularly in East Asia. It is primarily driven by axial elongation, a structural change associated with increased risks of myopic maculopathy, retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataracts. The expanding range of myopia‑control options can make treatment selection and management decisions more challenging in routine pediatric care. This narrative review synthesizes contemporary evidence and guidance for delaying myopia onset and slowing progression in children. METHODS: A targeted, non-systematic search was conducted i

Branched Split Activator-Regulated Cas12a Biosensor For Methyltransferases Detection.

DNA methyltransferases (MTases) are important epigenetic enzymes involved in DNA methylation regulation and have attracted considerable interest as analytical targets in disease-related epigenetic studies. However, traditional detection methods are constrained by laboratory-bound, sophisticated instrumentation and time-consuming protocols, while emerging approaches either depend on complex enzymatic amplifications or suffer from uncontrolled background signals, limiting their bioanalysis utility for precision-medicine-related applications. Inspired by the structure-controlled activation mechan

A practical approach to the management of percutaneous coronary intervention complications.

INTRODUCTION: Despite advances in stent design, pharmacotherapy, and procedural techniques that have improved percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) outcomes and reduced PCI-related complications, these events still occur and are associated with adverse outcomes. Moreover, complex PCI procedures, which predispose to increased risk of complications, are increasingly performed. Understanding risk factors, underlying mechanisms, evidence-based management, and preventive strategies are essential to optimize procedural outcomes. This review aims to summarize current evidence and highlight gaps in

Air-Cladding Blue Laser Diodes.

Low refractive index contrast in long-wavelength nitride laser diodes (LDs) limits optical confinement, motivating new architectural approaches. Here, we report the first electrically driven edge-emitting LDs featuring top and bottom air-claddings. To enable the top air cladding, the architecture employs a tunnel junction, which converts the current flow from holes to electrons. This allows for low series resistance lateral current flow and placement of the metal contact on the side of the LD mesa. The bottom air-cladding is realized postepitaxy through lateral electrochemical etching (ECE) of

Edge-Deployable Lightweight Deep Learning for Hypertensive Retinopathy Grading from En-Face OCT: A Patient-Level Feasibility Study.

Background: Hypertensive retinopathy (HR) is an early marker of hypertension-related end-organ damage, and multi-grade classification is limited by overlap between the early stages. No prior study has reported edge-deployable HR grading from optical coherence tomography (OCT). We assess patient-level-validated four-grade HR classification from en-face OCT with on-device inference. Methods: MobileViT-XXS and EfficientNetV2-B0 were evaluated on 478 en-face OCT images from 221 patients. To avoid leakage, all partitions were patient-level: stratified group 5-fold cross-validation with a patient-di

Antibiotic-Loaded Porous Titanium Antibacterial Particle Coatings by High-Velocity Embedment into Silicone.

Effective antimicrobial biomaterial surfaces are clinically beneficial as they can prevent infections caused by pathogens that are introduced during surgical procedures. Moreover, they can be advantageous for the long-term performance of medical devices. In the current study, we present an innovative procedure for the manufacture of biocompatible composite surfaces that provide controlled antibiotic release. We utilized titanium particles featuring a porous structure (pTi) as carriers and loaded these with crystalline ciprofloxacin (Cip). We then used these particles to modify the surface of p
