The role of experience on judgments of dysphonia.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the study were (1) to determine differences in judgments of overall severity (OS) and vocal effort (VE) of dysphonic speech when judgments were made by experienced and inexperienced listeners, and when self-rated by individuals with dysphonia; and (2) to determine relationships between auditory-perceptual judgments of voice and voice handicap. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective and exploratory. METHODS: Twenty speakers with dysphonia and four normal controls provided speech recordings. Participants judged their own speech samples for OS and VE and completed the Voice Han

Infections and antibiotic prescribing in Swedish nursing homes: a cross-sectional study.

The aim of this study was to present and assess the treatment of infections in Swedish nursing homes. It included 58 nursing homes with 3002 residents. During 3 months, nurses in the nursing homes recorded all infections requiring a physician's opinion. Of the 889 infectious episodes, 84% were treated with antibiotics. Many of the antibiotics were issued after indirect contact with the physician (38%). Indications for antibiotics were in 55% of the cases urinary tract infections (UTI), in 17% skin and soft-tissue infections and in 15% respiratory tract infections (RTI). The most common antibio

Occupational contact dermatitis in Australia: diagnostic and management practices, and severity of worker impairment.

The aims of this study were to compare treatment and referral practices between general practitioners (GPs) and dermatologists and to evaluate predictors for occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) disease severity measured in terms of worker impairment. Data were collected from 181 patients recruited for a larger study of OCD. Information about treatment recommendations and usual referral practices are reported for 123 patients. Data from patients, diagnosed with work-related skin disease, were modelled for severity of worker impairment. GPs were more likely to treat a patient independently, re

Assessment of Knowledge and Clinical Practice Patterns in Restorative Material Selection for Anterior Teeth Among Dental Practitioners.

INTRODUCTION: The selection of restorative materials for anterior teeth is a critical aspect of contemporary restorative dentistry that requires the integration of esthetic, functional, and biological considerations. The increasing availability of restorative materials and adhesive technologies necessitates evidence-based decision-making to optimize treatment outcomes. However, variations in practitioner knowledge and clinical practice may influence restorative material selection and treatment success. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the knowledge and clinical practice patterns of dental

Access to clinical data for direct oral anticoagulant prescriptions in community pharmacy and implications for medication optimisation: a mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Inappropriate direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) prescribing is a frequent cause of harm to patients. Pharmacists could play an important role in optimising prescribing, but they need access to relevant clinical data to do so. Little is known about community pharmacists' access to clinical data to assess the appropriateness of DOAC prescriptions. AIM: To investigate the availability of relevant clinical data for DOAC prescriptions and whether additionally requesting such data supports community pharmacists in assessing and optimising DOAC prescriptions. This study also explored be

Elevating quality of life in Saudi special education by using teacher and student insights to develop future-ready programs.

BACKGROUND: Inclusive and future-ready special education is increasingly prioritized worldwide because it supports quality of life, independence, and social participation for learners with disabilities. In Saudi Arabia, these aims align with Vision 2030; however, persistent curricular, resource, and capacity constraints may limit the effective implementation of inclusive practices across school contexts. METHODS: A mixed-methods study was conducted using semi-structured interviews and focus groups alongside quantitative surveys to examine factors influencing special education quality in the K

Barriers and facilitators to population-based lung cancer screening in Belgium: a qualitative stakeholder analysis in a pre-implementation context.

BACKGROUND: Low-dose computed tomography screening has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing lung cancer mortality among high-risk populations. Despite growing international momentum and supportive evidence, population-based lung cancer screening has not yet been implemented in Flanders, Belgium. Successful implementation requires insight into context-specific barriers and facilitators from both healthcare professionals (HCPs) and potential screening participants (PSPs). This study aimed to explore stakeholders' perspectives on the implementation and uptake of lung cancer screening in Flander

Trauma-Informed Principles in Practice: A Mixed-Method Study of Co-Producing Systems Change With People Who Have Experienced Multiple Disadvantage.

BACKGROUND: Health and social care services increasingly recognise the value of involving people with lived experience in service design and delivery. For people who have experienced multiple disadvantage (combinations of homelessness, mental ill health, addiction, involvement with the criminal justice systems or domestic violence/abuse), participating in professional settings may be challenging and can risk re-traumatisation and greater disillusionment. However, gaining confidence and competency to do this offers opportunities for personal and professional development, contributing to meaning

Global Perspectives on Physician-Assisted Death: A Cross-Sectional Survey of Doctors' Opinions.

Introduction Physician-assisted death (PAD) remains ethically and legally contested worldwide. PAD encompasses both euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide, and is used interchangeably with assisted dying. While some countries have legalized PAD, many others continue to deliberate, some remain silent, and many don't engage on this issue. Physicians' perspectives are central to these discussions, yet cross-national data remain limited. This study seeks to explore these perspectives and identify the factors that influence them. Methods We conducted an anonymous, online cross-sectional survey o

Effect of structured orthopaedic education on musculoskeletal knowledge among non-orthopaedic healthcare professionals: A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Over 1.7 billion people worldwide suffer from musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which include osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and low back pain. These ailments account for 149 million years of life with a handicap. General practitioners, nurses, and emergency physicians are examples of non-orthopaedic healthcare workers who frequently lack formal training in musculoskeletal assessment and management, despite their significant frequency. This disparity in education leads to subpar patient treatment, improper referrals, and delayed diagnosis, especially in low- and middle-income countr

Effect of match load on perceived wellness in highly trained female football players.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to match loads significantly affects physiological and psychological indicators and, consequently, players' wellness. However, this information is still scarce in women's football. Therefore, the aims of this study were twofold: a) to compare the wellness variation from matchday (MD) to two days post-match (MD+2); b) and to analyse the correlations between the players' external load on MD and the self-reported wellness on the day after the match (MD+1) and MD+2. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included data from 22 weeks and 33 official matches from 18 profession

Educational strategies used to improve the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of health care students and providers regarding implicit bias: An integrative review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The thoughts, feelings, and attitudes health care professionals unconsciously have about patients can negatively impact patients' health outcomes. Systematic reviews related to implicit bias in health care providers have uncovered negative implicit bias towards older adults, people of color, people with disabilities, psychiatric patients, patients who are obese, people of low socioeconomic status, and women. Implicit bias impacts the quality, safety, and competence of care delivered; interactions between patients and providers; and patient approval of treatment recommendations. Hea
