Infectious agents, including parasites, often have oncogenic potential. However, there has been no study on the association between Strongyloides stercoralis infection and cancer risk. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between S. stercoralis infection and the occurrence of hepato-pancreato-biliary cancer. This case-control study examined 1,654 patients aged>or=50 years in the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, Ryukyu University Hospital, Okinawa, Japan, between 1991 and 2005. There were 196 patients with hepato-pancreato-biliary cancer and 1,458 control patients without cancer.

In human hosts and in murine models, the immune response to Strongyloides spp. is Th2 type. In addition, the profile of the host immune response follows various symptoms induced by Strongyloides spp. In the present study, we demonstrated that the L2 and L49 strains of Strongyloides venezuelensis obtained from Bolomys lasiurus and Nectomys squamipes induced significant and similar increases in eosinophil/mononuclear cell counts in the blood, peritoneal cavity fluid and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid when compared with uninfected mice. However, in the first 3 days of infection, IL-4, IL-5 and IFN-

The protective response in rats against a homologous challenge infection with Strongyloides venezuelensis was characterized. In an initial infection with 1000 filariform larvae and migrating larvae (L(3)) of S. venezuelensis, the population of L(3) in the lungs on day 3 postinfection (PI), and that of adult worms in the small intestine on day 7 PI, were 180.8+/-14.5 and 336.8+/-70.7, respectively. The latter were gradually expelled towards day 42 PI. After the initial infection, the rats developed strong immunity against a homologous challenge infection as manifested by a marked reduction in w

The effects of male and female sex hormones on the protective capacity of Wistar rats against infection with Strongyloides venezuelensis were investigated. Male rats were more susceptible than females in terms of worm recovery from the lungs. Orchidectomy of male animals significantly reduced the plasma testosterone concentration and increased host resistance to the migratory stages of S. venezuelensis larvae. In contrast, ovariectomy of female animals significantly decreased host resistance in association with a significant reduction of estrogen levels. To examine the direct effect of sex hor

Oral transfer of parasitic adult Strongyloides stercoralis produced patent infections in gerbils, C57BL/6J and SCID mice. In gerbils receiving adult worms, 7.3% of the transferred worms established and autoinfective L3 were found beginning on day 5 post-transfer, with peak numbers seen on days 6 and 7 post-transfer and few seen by 9 days post-transfer. These results suggest that development of autoinfective L3 in the gerbil is limited by the immune response of the host. When given orally to mice, between 7.2% (C57BL/6J) and 19.5% (SCID) of the adult worms established. These levels are higher t

Infective larvae of Strongyloides venezuelensis were injected into the medial aspect of the thigh of Wistar rats and ddy mice to investigate their distribution within their hosts with the passage of time. The parasite migrated subcutaneously or intramuscularly towards the upper body and gradually arrived in the lung from 45 h post infection (p.i.) in rats and from 42 h p.i. in mice. After the larvae passed through the trachea, they first appeared in the small intestine at 60 h p.i., probably via the oesophagus and stomach. In comparison to the rats, more larvae were recovered from the mice at

The present study was aimed at elucidating the responsibility of parasitic females for sudden cardiac death following Strongyloides papillosus infection in calves. A preliminary experiment demonstrated a percutaneous infection with S. papillosus infective larvae to cause sudden cardiac death in lambs as in calves, indicating lambs could serve as a model to study fatal stronglyloidiasis in calves. Parasitic females of S. papillosus were inoculated into the duodenum of lambs. Lambs given live worms developed continuous sinus tachycardia immediately after inoculation, and died of sudden cardiac a

Syrian golden hamster, Mesocricetus auratus, was found to be a moderately susceptible host for the intestinal helminth, Strongyloides venezuelensis. After infection by subcutaneous inoculation with 3000 infective larvae (L3), about 20% of them became adult worms in the small intestine, and, after a stable infection up to day 20, adult worms were slowly and gradually expelled towards day 45. Before infection, mast cells in the jejunum were about 30/10 villus crypt units and over 80% of them were formalin-resistant and berberine sulphate-fluorescence positive. After infection with S. venezuelens

The effects of five nematocidal drugs (levamisole HCl, metrifonate, fenbendazole, mebendazole, and ivermectin) on the nematode Anguillicola crassus, pathogenic in eels and recently introduced in Europe, were tested under in vivo conditions. The resulting tissue alterations were studied by means of light and electron microscopy. It was found that levamisole and metrifonate were most effective in a freshwater bath (1 mg/l) for 24 h. The 50% lethal dose of levamisole was 250 mg/l per 24 hours, whereas that of metrifonate was only 10 mg/l per 2 hours. Morphological studies of the nematodes showed

In an isolated rural community in Papua New Guinea, 88 children were found to be infected with Strongyloides cf. fuelleborni; 50 of these also had hookworm infections. Their ages ranged from one to 124 months and all were treated with thiabendazole suspension, 25 mg/kg twice daily for 3 days. 2 patients with Strongyloides and 5 with hookworm were still passing ova 2 weeks after treatment although their egg counts were lower or the same as the pre-treatment counts. 26 children experienced some side effects from the drug, vomiting being the most common; in none did side effects prevent completio

The activity of ivermectin was examined in Necator americanus, a human hookworm, adapted to the laboratory hamster. A dose of 30 mg kg-1 X 1 or 10 mg kg-1 X 2 was required for complete clearance of pre-adult N. americanus; however, hamsters carrying adult N. americanus were completely cured of infection by doses of 15 mg kg-1 or 7.5 mg kg-1 X 2. The doses of ivermectin required for complete elimination of N. americanus were much higher than those reported for other intestinal nematodes. The probable reasons for these higher doses are discussed. Tests were also carried out with other rodent par
