Voice and Stroboscopic Characteristics in Transgender Patients Seeking Gender-Affirming Voice Care.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding transgender voice is in nascent stages. This study describes voice characteristics in treatment-seeking trans women by comparing two validated questionnaires-Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) and Transsexual Voice Questionnaire (TVQMtF )-and reports incidence of abnormal stroboscopy findings and acoustic characteristics. METHODS: Retrospective review of transgender patients presenting to tertiary-care laryngology center between February 2018-February 2019. Mean VHI-10, TVQ, and Singing VHI-10 (SVHI-10) scores; audio-perceptual grade; acoustic measures; and stroboscopy

PrEP4Love: The Role of Messaging and Prevention Advocacy in PrEP Attitudes, Perceptions, and Uptake Among YMSM and Transgender Women.

BACKGROUND: Despite high efficacy, use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) remains low among young men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TW), primarily because of barriers such as stigma and resource awareness. We evaluated a social marketing campaign known as PrEP4Love that works to eliminate PrEP stigma; and awareness gaps through targeted advertising. SETTING: Chicago, Illinois. METHODS: Participants were enrolled within a cohort study of young MSM and TW (RADAR). Data were collected between June 2017 and April 2018 from HIV-negative individuals attending a follow-up visit

Psychosocial Syndemic Risks Surrounding Physical Health Conditions Among Sexual and Gender Minority Individuals.

Purpose: The high prevalence of physical health conditions among sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals could be explained, in part, by SGM individuals' disparate exposure to interconnected psychosocial syndemic risks, including substance use, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, intimate partner violence, and sexual assault. We utilized a syndemic framework to understand the overlapping and potentially synergistic association between psychosocial syndemic risks and physical health conditions among SGM adults. Methods: A sample of 298 self-identified SGM adults (M age = 28.03, SD =

Health Disparities, Risk Behaviors and Healthcare Utilization Among Transgender Women in Los Angeles County: A Comparison from 1998-1999 to 2015-2016.

Data from two studies of transgender women in Los Angeles County that used the same methodology and survey assessment (Study 1: 1998-1999, N = 244; Study 2: 2015-2016, N = 271), compared structural determinants of health, HIV/STI prevalence, HIV risk behaviors, substance use, gender confirmation procedures, and perceived discrimination and harassment/abuse across a 17-year time period. Findings demonstrated that participants in the latter study reported significantly higher access to healthcare insurance and prescription hormones. However, participants in the latter study also reported lower l

HIV-Related Stigma and HIV Prevention Uptake Among Young Men Who Have Sex with Men and Transgender Women in Thailand.

HIV-related stigma is a pervasive structural driver of HIV. With an HIV epidemic among young men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TG) in Thailand characterized as explosive, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among MSM and TG aged 18-30 years. From April-August 2013, participants recruited using venue-based sampling from gay entertainment sites and community-based organizations completed a tablet-assisted survey interview in Thai language. We conducted multiple logistic regression to assess correlations between HIV-related stigma (felt-normative, vicarious domains) and soc

Surgical Outcome after Penile Inversion Vaginoplasty: A Retrospective Study of 475 Transgender Women.

BACKGROUND: For many transgender women, vaginoplasty is the final stage in the gender-confirming process. Penile inversion vaginoplasty is considered the gold standard for vaginal construction in transgender women. In this study, the authors assessed intraoperative and postoperative complications after penile inversion vaginoplasty. METHODS: All patients who underwent penile inversion vaginoplasty between January of 2000 and January of 2014 were identified retrospectively from the authors' hospital registry. A retrospective chart review was conducted. Outcome measures were intraoperative and

'We are despised in the hospitals': sex workers' experiences of accessing health care in four African countries.

Sex workers in east and southern Africa are exposed to multiple occupational health and safety risks. Detailed understanding of barriers to accessing care would optimise design of improved services for this population. In this study, trained sex workers conducted 55 in-depth interviews and 12 focus group discussions with 106 female, 26 male and 4 transgender sex workers across 6 urban sites in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Uganda and South Africa. Data were analysed thematically, following an interpretive framework. Participants cited numerous unmet health needs, including diagnosis and treatment for sexua

Use of Machine Learning Tools in Evidence Synthesis of Tobacco Use Among Sexual and Gender Diverse Populations: Algorithm Development and Validation.

BACKGROUND: From 2016 to 2021, the volume of peer-reviewed publications related to tobacco has experienced a significant increase. This presents a considerable challenge in efficiently summarizing, synthesizing, and disseminating research findings, especially when it comes to addressing specific target populations, such as the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, Two Spirit, and other persons who identify as part of this community) populations. OBJECTIVE: In order to expedite evidence synthesis and research gap discoveries, this pilot study has the following

Training through trauma: A multivariate analysis of burnout and associated factors among physician trainees in Guatemala.

OBJECTIVE: Burnout is a pervasive occupational hazard in medicine, beginning early in training and linked to depression, suicide, medical errors, and attrition. While extensively studied in high-income countries, little is known from Latin America. Guatemala faces scarce mental health resources, social inequities, and limited residency regulation. This study aimed to characterize burnout, psychological distress, and moral injury among Guatemalan physicians in postgraduate medical training ("residents"). METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of residents in Guatemala (September-October

Early Implementation of Doxycycline Postexposure Prophylaxis at an Infectious Diseases Clinic in the Southern United States.

Doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP) is an emerging strategy to prevent bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW). We evaluated early DoxyPEP implementation in a university-affiliated infectious diseases clinic providing HIV and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) care in Durham, North Carolina. This retrospective study included two overlapping cohorts: (1) patients prescribed DoxyPEP through December 31, 2024, to characterize early prescribing and follow-up with contextual clinic comparison; and (2) MSM and TGW dia

Potential impact of doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis prescribing strategies on incidence of bacterial sexually transmitted infections.

BACKGROUND: Doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxyPEP) reduces bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) incidence in people with HIV (PWH) or using HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Given concerns about widespread antibiotic use, we identified doxyPEP prescribing strategies to minimize use while maximizing impact on STIs. METHODS: We used electronic health records of gay and bisexual men (GBM), transgender women, and non-binary people assigned male sex at birth with ≥2 STI tests (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis) at an LGBTQ-focused health center during 2015-2020. We defined 10 hyp

High Incidence, Reinfections, and Active Syphilis in Populations Attending a Specialized HIV Clinic in Mexico, a Dynamic Cohort Study.

Syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection, has reemerged in many vulnerable groups around the world. The objective of the current study was to determine the prevalence and incidence of syphilis among people who attended a specialized HIV clinic in Mexico from 2011 to 2015. Databases from the laboratory were analyzed, and the following four groups were formed: people seeking HIV-1 voluntary counseling and testing (VCT), people in prison (PPr), people living with HIV (PLWH), and patients from primary care clinics (others). The diagnosis of syphilis was made using the reverse algorithm; antibody

Impact of reduced-frequency monitoring among users of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis on sexually transmitted infections and associated care: secondary outcomes of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users are generally screened for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) every 3 months. The need for such frequent screening is debatable. We compared STI diagnoses and associated care between PrEP users who underwent 6-monthly versus 3-monthly PrEP monitoring. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of the EZI-PrEP study- a 2 × 2 factorial randomized controlled trial examining 6-monthly versus 3-monthly and online versus in-clinic PrEP monitoring among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender or gender-diverse persons in the Neth

Gender Dysphoria and Dissociative Identity Disorder: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND: World Professional Association for Transgender Health guidelines support the importance of a mental health assessment before providing medical treatment for Gender Dysphoria (GD). During this assessment, patients without GD but with mental health disorder and who request treatment for GD should be excluded. Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a poorly known mental disorder which can be confused for GD. AIM: To provide a case report of a patient suffering for DID but asking for treatment for GD and to provide a review of the literature on GD and DID. METHOD: A case report asse
