A Spiking Neural Network for Non-Invasive Glucose Estimation on Wearable Bioimpedance Biosensors, with a Multiplication-Free Neuromorphic Path.

Wearable glucose monitoring demands low-power local processing, but conventional neural networks rely on energy-intensive multiply-accumulate (MAC) operations that limit battery life. This study shows that a Spiking Neural Network (SNN), built on a regression-adapted Leaky Integrate-and-Fire (LIF) neuron, can estimate blood glucose from multi-frequency bioimpedance and auxiliary biosignals with clinically auditable accuracy at low computational and memory cost. Using data from 98 patients (717 measurements, eGluco3 device, Azambuja Hospital, Brusque, Brazil) evaluated by 5-fold walk-forward cr

SparseXMIL: Leveraging sparse convolutions for context-aware and memory-efficient classification of whole slide images in digital pathology.

The computer analysis of Whole Slide Images (WSIs) has become increasingly prevalent in pathology-based diagnosis, although their analysis still presents considerable challenges due to the voluminous nature of the data. To address this issue, Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) has emerged as a viable approach in which WSIs are partitioned into tiles for processing. Nevertheless, previous MIL methodologies inadequately capture the essential spatial context between tiles, which is imperative for accurate diagnosis across various diseases. In parallel, approaches based on adapting Convolutional Neu

Calcaneal spur detection from lateral foot radiographs using deep feature engineering.

Deep learning achieves high accuracy in medical imaging but requires large datasets. Performance decreases in small datasets. This study proposes a deep feature engineering (DFE) framework for calcaneal spur detection in X-ray images. A curated dataset of 775 X-ray images was analyzed, with 316 labeled as no finding and 459 as calcaneal spur. The framework has five phases: (i) feature extraction from 19 pretrained CNNs, (ii) feature selection with iterative neighborhood component analysis (INCA), (iii) classification with a t-algorithm-based k-nearest neighbors (tkNN) ensemble, (iv) generation

Artificial neural network-based analysis of ferroptosis-associated molecular subtypes and immunological profiles in abdominal aortic aneurysm.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a severe vascular disease that can lead to rupture and life-threatening hemorrhage. The role of ferroptosis in AAA pathogenesis remains insufficiently understood. This study aims to investigate the role of ferroptosis in AAA by identifying ferroptosis-associated molecular subtypes and examining their relationship with immunological characteristics using an artificial neural network (ANN) model. METHODS: We analyzed three publicly available datasets (GSE7084, GSE47472, and GSE57691) to identify differentially expressed ferroptosis-related genes (F

Reliable leukemia detection via transfer-enhanced Bayesian CNNs.

Accurate and early detection of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is critical for timely intervention and improved patient outcomes. However, the development of reliable deep learning models for hematological image analysis is challenged by limited data availability, dataset bias, and the need for trustworthy predictions in clinical settings. In this study, we propose a Bayesian deep learning framework that integrates transfer learning, data augmentation, and uncertainty quantification for robust classification of leukemic and healthy lymphocytes from peripheral blood smear images. Three wide

Evaluating the Adversarial Robustness and Clinical Safety of Quantized Hierarchical Transformers for Edge-Based Malaria Microscopy.

Automated mobile microscopy in Internet of Things (IoT) networks is essential for scaling malaria screening in resource-constrained environments. Deploying standard convolutional architectures here introduces severe adversarial vulnerabilities. Post-Training Quantization (PTQ) mitigates hardware constraints by converting floating-point models to 8-bit integers (INT8); however, its impact on clinical safety and security remains unexplored. This study presents an adversarial audit of quantized Vision Transformers for medical edge deployment. We evaluated a Swin-Tiny transformer against ViT-Tiny

Performance Comparison of Multi-Modal Fusion Techniques in Tissue Perfusion Analysis Using Homography Calibration.

This study explores the impact of fusion techniques and camera calibration on tissue perfusion analysis using multi-modal imaging. Building on the existing TTPD dataset collected with a prototype hardware platform, we focus on optimizing data alignment and fusion strategies to improve classification accuracy. The imaging system integrates infrared (IR), thermal, and RGB cameras, capturing complementary information about tissue perfusion. To improve modality alignment, we apply Homography-based calibration, reducing spatial discrepancies between different imaging sources. Furthermore, we evalua

Comparison of Leptosira concentrations in two rivers within contrasting catchments in a leptospirosis hotspot.

Leptospirosis is a neglected disease that primarily impacts small islands in the South Pacific region. We compared pathogenic Leptospira concentration in rivers from two contrasting catchments in New Caledonia, a leptospirosis hot spot. The Tho and Foa catchments are located on the humid east coast and on the drier west coast, respectively. Similar concentrations of pathogenic Leptospira (pL) were found in both catchments although no extreme events were sampled in Foa and two cyclones were sampled in Tho. Moreover, significant pL concentrations were found in Foa during a 25 mm rainfall event a

Spatially guided translation from histology images to transcriptomic profiles using foundation model-driven contrastive learning.

Spatial transcriptomics (ST) enhances single-cell RNA sequencing by revealing transcript distribution, offering critical insights into heterogeneous diseases such as breast cancer. However, the high cost and lengthy processes of generating high-quality ST data limit clinical application. Recent deep learning methods predict ST from histology images, but often fail to capture both morphological features and spatial context. We introduce FOCST, a foundation model-driven framework for ST imputation that leverages spatial guided contrastive learning. FOCST begins with UNI, a large histopathology f

NEXT-FBA: A hybrid stoichiometric/data-driven approach to improve intracellular flux predictions.

Genome-scale metabolic models (GEMs) have been widely utilized to understand cellular metabolism. The application of GEMs has been advanced by computational methods that enable the prediction and analysis of intracellular metabolic states. However, the accuracy and biological relevance of these predictions often suffer from the many degrees of freedom and scarcity of available data to constrain the models adequately. Here, we introduce Neural-net EXtracellular Trained Flux Balance Analysis, (NEXT-FBA), a novel computational methodology that addresses these limitations by utilizing exometabolom

ANN-assisted comprehensive screening of silica gel-alunite composite sorbent system for efficient adsorption of toxic nickel ions: Batch and continuous mode water treatment applications.

Through batch and fixed-bed column operations, nickel ions were extracted from a contaminated aqueous media by adsorption onto silica gel-immobilized alunite (Sg@Aln). A three-layer backward-propagating network with an ideal pattern of 5-10-1 and 4-10-1 was used to train and validate an artificial neural network (ANN) model for process modeling and optimization in batch and continuous systems, respectively. For the test dataset, the model outputs of the model pointed out a satisfactory alignment between the anticipated and experimental response. The Sg@Aln dosage and contact time were recorded

Classification Algorithms for Early Tooth Demineralization Assessment by Impedance Spectroscopy.

Oral caries is one of the most common oral diseases worldwide, affecting about 2.4 billion people. This phenomenon always starts with enamel demineralization, eventually progressing to tooth cavitation and loss when not properly treated. Nowadays, the standard diagnostic techniques to detect demineralization strongly depend on the operator's expertise and are characterized by fairly low sensitivity and specificity, and/or involve ionizing radiation. This study investigates the feasibility of a non-invasive, effective, rapid, and radiation-free approach employing impedance spectroscopy for earl

Multi-modal deep learning framework for early detection of Parkinson's disease using neurological and physiological data for high-fidelity diagnosis.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that remained challenging for proper diagnosis in its early stages due to its heterogeneous symptom presentation and overlapping clinical features. Consequently, there is no consensus on effectively detecting early-stage PD and classifying motor symptom severity. Therefore, the proposed research introduced MultiParkNet, an avant-grade multi-modal deep learning framework for early-stage PD detection synthesizing diverse neurological and physiological data sources. The proposed system integrated audio speech patterns, motor ski

Self-supervised VICReg pre-training for Brugada ECG detection.

Existing deep learning algorithms for electrocardiogram (ECG) classification rely on supervised training approaches requiring large volumes of reliably labeled data. This limits their applicability to rare cardiac diseases like Brugada syndrome (BrS), often lacking accurately labeled ECG examples. To address labeled data constraints and the resulting limitations of supervised training approaches, we developed a novel deep learning model for BrS ECG classification using the Variance-Invariance-Covariance Regularization (VICReg) architecture for self-supervised pre-training. The VICReg model out

Study on real-time warning system of blind path for the visually impaired based on improved deep residual shrinkage network.

Visually impaired individuals often face various obstacles when navigating blind roads, such as road disconnections, obstructions, and more complex road emergencies, which can leave them in difficult situations. Traditional early warning methods suffer from low accuracy and lack real-time warning capabilities. Therefore, this study proposes a novel real-time warning system for traffic jams on blind roads. By analyzing the emotional state (normal, mild anxiety, extreme anxiety) from the electroencephalogram (EEG) signals of visually impaired individuals when they are trapped, the system can det

Forecasting malaria cases using climate variability in Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to pose a public health challenge in Sierra Leone, where timely and accurate forecasting can guide more effective interventions. Although seasonal models such as Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) have traditionally been employed for disease forecasting, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have gained attention for capturing complex temporal patterns that linear models may not fully capture. METHODS: This study compares the forecasting performance of SARIMA and ANN models in forecasting malaria cases using malaria case data from 2018 to 2023

A vision-language model for enhanced MCI identification in Alzheimer's disease through neuropsychological and neuroimaging data integration.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder with the progression typically spanning from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to severe dementia. However, in clinical practice, diagnosing MCI is challenging due to conflicts between neuroimaging findings and clinical neuropsychological assessments. Structural and metabolic changes in imaging may not immediately correlate with cognitive symptoms, making early MCI detection difficult. This diagnostic complexity requires considerable clinical expertise and can lead to delays in detection. Moreover, multi-modal fusion using comput
