Distribution of the mRNA encoding the four dopamine D(1) receptor subtypes in the brain of the european eel (Anguilla anguilla): comparative approach to the function of D(1) receptors in vertebrates.

Four subtypes of D(1) dopamine receptors are expressed in the brain of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla), an elopomorph teleost. To correlate this molecular multiplicity with specific localisation and functions, the distribution of the D(1) receptor transcripts was analysed by in situ hybridisation. The four D(1) receptor transcripts exhibit largely overlapping expression territories. In telencephalon, they are found in the olfactory bulb and the dorsal telencephalon (except its lateral part) but are most abundant in the subpallial areas. More caudally, the entopeduncular nucleus, preoptic …

Regions in the brainstem and frontal cortex where electrical stimulation elicits parotid and submandibular saliva secretion in sheep.

Acute experiments were conducted in sheep anaesthetized with sodium pentobarbital to identify regions in the brain where electrical stimulat … were observed in about half of the sheep. There were no effects on either gland of stimulating the olfactory bulbs. This is the first report of the regions in the brain which increase parotid and submandibular saliva secretion in ruminants. The three-dimensional representation of both sites in the brainstem of individual animals is more precise than the composi …

Spread of a neurotropic coronavirus to spinal cord white matter via neurons and astrocytes.

Mouse hepatitis virus strain JHM (MHV-JHM) causes a chronic encephalomyelitis in susceptible mice, with histological evidence of demyelination in the spinal cord. After intranasal inoculation, virus spreads retrogradely to several brain structures along neuroanatomic projections to the main olfactory bulb. In the absence of experimental intervention, mice become moribund before the spinal cord is infected. In this study, infusions of anti-MHV neutralizing monoclonal antibodies were administered to protect mice from the MHV-JHM-induced acute encephalitis and to allow survival until virus spread…

Midline cerebral dysgenesis, dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, and fetal alcohol effects.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropathologic evaluation was performed on an infant with fetal alcohol effects. DESIGN: Coronal brain sections and representat … d palate, shortened palpebral fissures, and a small brain. The frontal lobes were fused anteriorly; olfactory bulbs and tracts were absent; and optic nerves were hypoplastic. An enlarged and bulbous hypothalamus obscured the pituitary gland. The thalamus and caudate nuclei were fused across the midline. Posteriorly, the single ventricle split to form rudimentary …

Binding studies and photoaffinity labeling identify two classes of phencyclidine receptors in rat brain.

Binding and photoaffinity labeling experiments were employed in order to differentiate 1-(1-phenylcyclohexyl)piperidine (PCP) receptor sites … by high-affinity sites (hippocampus greater than frontal cortex greater than thalamus greater than olfactory bulb greater than hypothalamus), but some parts (e.g., hippocampus, hypothalamus) contain low-affinity sites as well. In the cerebellum only low-affinity sites were detected. Binding sites for [3H]PCP and for its photolabile analogue [3H]azido-PCP showed …

Olfactory bulbectomy induces neurobiological alterations in the prefrontal cortex and hyperlocomotion in male rats.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disability and encompasses various subtypes, including agitated depression which is associated with psychomotor agitation and elevated suicide risk. Although the olfactory bulbectomy (OBX) model has been extensively utilized to study depression-related behaviors, most studies have focused on the hippocampus, leaving the role of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) less explored. In this study, we examined the behavioral responses to novelty in the open field test and examined glial and neuronal alterations in the PFC of OBX rats. Our findings reveal…

Differential induction of apoptosis in demyelinating and nondemyelinating infection by mouse hepatitis virus.

The role of apoptosis in mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) infection is still controversial. To better assess the role of apoptosis in MHV infection, we used three different biologic phenotypes of MHV to examine their differential effect on the induction of apoptosis. MHV-A59 produces acute hepatitis, meningoencephalitis, and chronic demyelination. MHV-2 causes only acute hepatitis and meningitis, whereas Penn98-1 produces acute hepatitis and meningoencephalitis without demyelination. We detected TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) staining in the livers and meninges of MHV-A59-, MHV-2-, and

Cranial nerves of the coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae [Osteichthyes: Sarcopterygii: Actinistia], and comparisons with other craniata.

We reconstructed the cranial nerves of a serially sectioned prenatal coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae. This allowed us to correct several mis … l nerves. Our chief findings are: 1) Latimeria possesses an external nasal papilla and pedunculated olfactory bulbs but lacks a discrete terminal nerve. In other respects its olfactory system resembles the plesiomorphic pattern for craniates. 2) The optic nerve is plicated, a character found in many but not all gnathostomes. Latimeria retains an interdigitated p …

Visualizing the spatial distribution of Alprazolam in the mouse brain following nasal administration using desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging.

Alprazolam (Alp), a triazolobenzodiazepine, is widely prescribed for the treatment of sleep disorders, anxiety, and panic disorder. While or … spectrometry imaging (DESI-MSI) demonstrated that Alp-nd significantly increased Alp content in the olfactory bulb within 2-5 min, and in the cortex, thalamus and hypothalamus within 2-30 min, and in the pineal gland within 5-30 min. These results suggest that the Alp-nd shortens sleep latency via the nose-to-brain pathway and extends sleep duration by increasin …

α-Synuclein decoy peptide protects mice against α-synuclein-induced memory loss.

AIMS: We previously found that a decoy peptide derived from the C-terminal sequence of α-Synuclein (αSyn) prevents cytotoxic αSyn aggregation caused by fatty acid-binding protein 3 (FABP3) in vitro. In this study, we continued to utilize αSyn-derived peptides to further validate their effects on αSyn neurotoxicity and behavioral impairments in αSyn preformed fibrils (PFFs)-injected mouse model of Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: Mice were injected with αSyn PFFs in the bilateral olfactory bulb (OB) and then were subjected to behavioral analysis at 2-week intervals post-injection. Peptides n…

Retinal degeneration protein 3 controls membrane guanylate cyclase activities in brain tissue.

The retinal degeneration protein RD3 is involved in regulatory processes of photoreceptor cells. Clinical and genetic analysis of nonketotic hyperglycinemia: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH) is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder of abnormal glycine metabolism caused by insufficient activity of the glycine cleavage enzyme system. Glycine is believed to function mainly as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, but it can also act as a co-agonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. The accumulation of a large amount of glycine in the brain leads to neuronal and axonal injury via overactivation of NMDA receptors located in the hippocampus, cerebral cortex, olfactory bulb, and cerebellum and to stimulation of the inhibitory functi…
