Thirteen cases of Niikawa-Kuroki syndrome: report and review with emphasis on medical complications and preventive management.

Eight new and five previously illustrated patients with Niikawa-Kuroki syndrome (NKS) are compared to those in the literature, providing data on 183 cases. Eight patients had disproportionate microcephaly and in one autopsied patient there was frontal lobe atrophy, focal polymicrogyria, and a hypoplastic fourth ventricle. The metacarpophalangeal pattern profiles of three Caucasian patients with NKS were similar to that of a prior case report, but those of two Hispanic patients were more variable. NKS was eliminated by follow-up in nine suspect cases, highlighting the diagnostic value of findin

Neurobehavioral and neurophysiological observations in six year old children with low lead levels in East and West Germany.

Within a larger comparative environmental health screening program in East and West Germany neurobehavioral and neurophysiological measures were taken in 367 six year old children in Leipzig (N = 179), Gardelegen (N = 68), and Duisburg (N = 120). Lead concentrations from venous blood samples (PbB) and from deciduous teeth (PbT) were measured as markers of environmental lead exposure by electrothermal AAS. Dependent variables included four subtests from NES1 (tapping, reaction time, pattern comparison, and Benton visual retention), as well as VEP-latencies (N2, P100, N3) evoked by checkerboard

Recognition of tennis serve performed by a digital player: comparison among polygon, shadow, and stick-figure models.

The objective of this study was to assess the cognitive effect of human character models on the observer's ability to extract relevant information from computer graphics animation of tennis serve motions. Three digital human models (polygon, shadow, and stick-figure) were used to display the computationally simulated serve motions, which were perturbed at the racket-arm by modulating the speed (slower or faster) of one of the joint rotations (wrist, elbow, or shoulder). Twenty-one experienced tennis players and 21 novices made discrimination responses about the modulated joint and also specifi

Ocular Manifestations in Rheumatic Diseases.

Ocular involvement is common in systemic rheumatic diseases and may precede or reflect systemic activity, serving as an important diagnostic clue. Inflammation can affect any ocular structure, with presentations ranging from mild to vision-threatening. Early recognition is critical, as ocular findings can guide diagnosis and management. A systematic approach combining clinical evaluation, imaging, and laboratory testing is essential to identify disease-specific patterns. Advances in immunomodulatory and biologic therapies have improved outcomes. Optimal care requires a multidisciplinary approa

Phonological activation in pure alexia.

Pure alexia is a reading impairment in which patients appear to read letter-by-letter. This disorder is typically accounted for in terms of a peripheral deficit that occurs early on in the reading system, prior to the activation of orthographic word representations. The peripheral interpretation of pure alexia has recently been challenged by the phonological deficit hypothesis, which claims that a postlexical disconnection between orthographic and phonological information contributes to or is responsible for the disorder. Because this hypothesis was mainly supported by data from a single patie

Neuroplasticity after unilateral visual cortex damage in the newborn cat.

Anatomical, electrophysiological, and behavioral studies implicate extrastriate cortex as a major contributor to the sparing of visually guided behaviors following lesions of primary visual cortex incurred early in life. Here we report considerable sparing of the ability to detect and localize stimuli in the hemifield contralateral to unilateral early lesions of all contiguous visually-responsive primary and extrastriate cortical regions (occipital, visuoparietal, and visuotemporal cortices). In the adult cat this same lesion induces a dense blindness and cats are unable to orient to any visua

Characterising dysfunctional breathing seen in post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 using approximate entropy.

RATIONALE: Dysfunctional breathing (DB) is a commonly identified abnormality in post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC) patients undergoing cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), and is potentially a contributor to ongoing symptoms. Currently, this oscillating, irregular breathing pattern is identified by visual observation of CPET data by an experienced interpreter, which is subjective. We hypothesise that approximate entropy (ApEn), a regularity statistic that quantifies the unpredictability of time-series data can reliably distinguish DB from normal breathing states. METHODS: Breath-by-

Enabling early detection of osteoarthritis from presymptomatic cartilage texture maps via transport-based learning.

Many diseases have no visual cues in the early stages, eluding image-based detection. Today, osteoarthritis (OA) is detected after bone damage has occurred, at an irreversible stage of the disease. Currently no reliable method exists for OA detection at a reversible stage. We present an approach that enables sensitive OA detection in presymptomatic individuals. Our approach combines optimal mass transport theory with statistical pattern recognition. Eighty-six healthy individuals were selected from the Osteoarthritis Initiative, with no symptoms or visual signs of disease on imaging. On 3-y fo

Word-centred neglect dyslexia: evidence from a new case.

Neglect dyslexia resulting from damage to word-centred representations is extremely rare. We report on a new case. A left-handed subject, SVE, presented with aphasia and neglect dyslexia/dysgraphia following a right hemisphere stroke. In tachistoscopic reading tasks, some of his errors resulted from retina-centred neglect, as he responded more accurately to words flashed in the left visual field than to words flashed in the right visual field. However, the critical aspects of his reading performance indicated word-centred neglect. SVE incorrectly produced the initial elements of four-letter wo

Latent Space Representation of Human Movement: Assessing the Effects of Fatigue.

Fatigue plays a critical role in sports science, significantly affecting recovery, training effectiveness, and overall athletic performance. Understanding and predicting fatigue is essential to optimize training, prevent overtraining, and minimize the risk of injuries. The aim of this study is to leverage Human Activity Recognition (HAR) through deep learning methods for dimensionality reduction. The use of Adversarial AutoEncoders (AAEs) is explored to assess and visualize fatigue in a two-dimensional latent space, focusing on both semi-supervised and conditional approaches. By transforming c

Distinct and distributed functional connectivity patterns across cortex reflect the domain-specific constraints of object, face, scene, body, and tool category-selective modules in the ventral visual pathway.

Primate occipitotemporal cortex (OTC) is composed of a mosaic of highly specialized brain regions each involved in the high-level visual analysis and recognition of particular stimulus categories (e.g., objects, faces, scenes, bodies and tools). Whereas theories attempting to account for this modular organization of category-selective responses in OTC have largely focused on visually driven, bottom-up inputs to OTC (e.g., dimensions related to the visual structure of the world and how it is experienced), other proposals have instead focused on the connectivity of OTC's outputs, emphasizing how

The eye movements of pure alexic patients during reading and nonreading tasks.

We compared the eye-movements of two patients who read letter-by-letter (LBL) following a left occipital lobe lesion with those of normal control subjects and of hemianopic patients in two tasks: a nonreading visual search task and a text reading task. Whereas the LBL readers exhibited similar eye-movement patterns to those of the other two groups on the nonreading task, their eye movements differed significantly during reading, as reflected in the disproportionate increase in the number and duration of fixations per word and in the regressive saccades per word. Importantly, relative to the tw

Research on Two-Stream Networks Integrating Physiological Features and Attention Mechanisms for Motion Classification in Visually Impaired Individuals.

To address the issues of low perception accuracy and poor robustness in traditional motion recognition methods within complex walking environments for visually impaired individuals, this study utilizes multi-modal data, including ECG, PPG, and IMU, for classification. Regarding the low filtering efficiency of multi-modal data, an improved wavelet filtering algorithm based on LSTM is proposed. To further enhance classification accuracy, this paper introduces a motion recognition method for the blindfolded mobility simulation based on an Attention-based Two-Stream Deep Fusion Convolutional Neura

Non-pixelated in-materia retinomorphic sensor via photocarrier dynamics for precise spatiotemporal perception.

Real-time perception of dynamic visual scenes requires efficient extraction of spatiotemporal features. However, conventional image sensors fail to capture inter-pixel correlations, leading to redundant data transfer, high power consumption and latency. Here, we present a non-pixelated in-materia retinomorphic sensor (IMRS) that exploits the intrinsic spatiotemporal dynamics and correlated distributions of photocarriers for visual information processing. Built on a large-area graphene/silicon heterostructure, the IMRS integrates circumferentially arranged sampling electrodes that harness the l

Anatomical variants of acne differ in their impact on social perception.

BACKGROUND: Acne negatively affects quality of life, however quality-of-life scores poorly correlate with disease severity scores. Previous research demonstrated existence of facial areas in which skin lesions have greater impact on gaze patterns. Therefore, we hypothesized that anatomical variants of acne may be perceived differently. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to investigate effect of anatomical variants of acne on natural gaze patterns and resulting impact on social perception of acne patients. METHODS: We tracked eye movements of participants viewing neutral and emotional faces with acne. I

Brain activation during word identification and word recognition.

Previous memory research has suggested that the effects of prior study observed in priming tasks are functionally, and neurobiologically, distinct phenomena from the kind of memory expressed in conventional (explicit) memory tests. Evidence for this position comes from observed dissociations between memory scores obtained with the two kinds of tasks. However, there is continuing controversy about the meaning of these dissociations. In recent studies, Ostergaard (1998a, Memory Cognit, 26:40-60; 1998b, J. Int. Neuropsychol. Soc., in press) showed that simply degrading visual word stimuli can dra

Dopamine, paranormal belief, and the detection of meaningful stimuli.

Dopamine (DA) is suggested to improve perceptual and cognitive decisions by increasing the signal-to-noise ratio. Somewhat paradoxically, a hyperdopaminergia (arguably more accentuated in the right hemisphere) has also been implied in the genesis of unusual experiences such as hallucinations and paranormal thought. To test these opposing assumptions, we used two lateralized decision tasks, one with lexical (tapping left-hemisphere functions), the other with facial stimuli (tapping right-hemisphere functions). Participants were 40 healthy right-handed men, of whom 20 reported unusual, "paranorm

Neural basis of pantomiming the use of visually presented objects.

UNLABELLED: Neuropsychological studies of patients suffering from apraxia strongly imply a left hemisphere basis for skillful object use, the neural mechanisms of which, however, remain to be elucidated. We therefore carried out a PET study in 14 healthy human volunteers with the aim to isolate the neural mechanisms underlying the sensorimotor transformation of object-triggers into skilled actions. We employed a factorial design with two factors ( RESPONSE: naming, pantomiming; and TRIGGER: actions, objects) and four conditions (IA: imitating the observed pantomime; IO: pantomiming the use of
