The effects of nutrient and lime additions on antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) accumulation by native Australian and naturalised plants growing in two contaminated mine site soils (2,735 mg kg(-1) and 4,517 mg kg(-1) Sb; 826 mg kg(-1) and 1606 As mgkg(-1)) was investigated using a glasshouse pot experiment. Detection and surveillance of food commodities containing cyanide is a crucial issue of food safety. In this study, five strains of Pleurotus eryngii (P. eryngii) were grown in submerged culture of yeast malt broth (YMB) with the suspected production of HCN. The aim of the study was to establish the importance of KOH mount in rapid diagnosis of fungal corneal ulcers. Corneal scrapings were collected from 50 patients with corneal ulcers where clinical features suggested fungal aetiology and ulcers showed no signs of healing on initial treatment. Corneal scrapings were subjected to wet mount with 10% KOH, Gram's stain, and culture on SDA media. Wet mount showed fungal elements in 34 cases (68%) and were classified according to morphology. The binding of the potent oral antidiabetic sulphonylurea [3H]glibenclamide was studied in rat cerebral cortex membranes. A single population of high affinity and saturable binding sites with equilibrium constants, Kd = 0.2 +/- 0.06 nM and Bmax = 58.6 +/- 6.2 fmol/mg protein was found.
