The role of learning in social development: Illustrations from neglected children.

Children who experience early caregiving neglect are very likely to have problems developing and maintaining relationships and regulating their social behavior. One of the earliest manifestations of this problem is reflected in indiscriminate behavior, a phenomenon where young children do not show normative wariness of strangers or use familiar adults as sources of security. To better understand the developmental mechanisms underlying the emergence of these problems, this study examined whether institutionally reared children, who experienced early social neglect, had difficulty associating mo

Behavioral dynamics and influence in networked coloring and consensus.

We report on human-subject experiments on the problems of coloring (a social differentiation task) and consensus (a social agreement task) in a networked setting. Both tasks can be viewed as coordination games, and despite their cognitive similarity, we find that within a parameterized family of social networks, network structure elicits opposing behavioral effects in the two problems, with increased long-distance connectivity making consensus easier for subjects and coloring harder. We investigate the influence that subjects have on their network neighbors and the collective outcome, and find

Predictors of problematic sexual behavior among children with complex maltreatment histories.

Exploratory analyses of sexual behavior problems (SBP) were conducted within a larger epidemiological study of 347 preadolescent children in foster and kinship care. SBP was estimated from carergiver-reported scores on the Assessment Checklist for Children. The study simultaneously examined a large number of discrete and cumulative influences on the development of children at high risk for SBP. Most children with SBP had corresponding psychopathology, most notably conduct problems, inattention, and interpersonal behavior problems suggestive of attachment disturbances. Several correlates identi

Health of the chronically mentally ill who rejoin the community: a community assessment.

This article describes findings from a community assessment project on 25 chronically mentally ill individuals who rejoined the community following discharge from psychiatric hospitals. The focus was to identify health concerns or problems and health promotion patterns using Healthy People 2000 as a guiding framework. Findings suggest that most participants found relocation to the community easy. Stress, depression, and abuse were mental health problems reported by participants. Physical health problems included high tobacco use, low exercise level, poor oral health, high-risk sexual behavior,

The process and mechanism of help-seeking behavior among people living with HIV: a qualitative analysis based on grounded theory.

BACKGROUND: AIDS is a global public health issue that requires continuous monitoring and response. Although antiretroviral therapy has decreased the death rate among people living with HIV, several physical and mental health issues remain to be addressed. Seeking help might be a way to solve mental health problems for people living with HIV. Although the research on help-seeking behavior is extensive, the specific content, process, and mechanism of help-seeking behavior in people living with HIV are still unclear. This study aims to explore the mechanism and process of help-seeking behavior in

Family Environment Modulates Linkage of Transdiagnostic Psychiatric Phenotypes and Dissociable Brain Features in the Developing Brain.

BACKGROUND: Family environment has long been known for shaping brain function and psychiatric phenotypes, especially during childhood and adolescence. Accumulating neuroimaging evidence suggests that across different psychiatric disorders, common phenotypes may share common neural bases, indicating latent brain-behavior relationships beyond diagnostic categories. However, the influence of family environment on the brain-behavior relationship from a transdiagnostic perspective remains unknown. METHODS: We included a community-based sample of 699 participants (ages 5-22 years) and applied parti

Using Machine Learning Methodology to Identify Predictors of Non-Response to MTSS-B: a Focus on Discipline Problems and Juvenile Justice Involvement.

Multi-tiered systems of support for behavior (MTSS-B) is a widely-used tiered preventive intervention currently used in over 25,000 schools across the USA. This study leveraged data from 16,907 elementary students across 42 schools that participated in a prior randomized controlled trial (RCT) of MTSS-B, where schools were randomly assigned to implement Tier 1 + 2 (intervention) supports or Tier 1 only (comparison). The RCT data, collected between 2008 and 2012, were linked to administrative records of behavior in grades 6-12 collected between 2008 and 2024. We used machine learning methods to

What Do We Know About the Stop Now and Plan Program? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of an Early Invention for Children and Youth with Conduct Problems.

Children who engage in aggressive behaviors are at heightened risk of being involved in the justice system, committing serious offenses, and becoming chronic offenders. The Stop Now And Plan (SNAP) program was designed as an early intervention to address several mechanisms underlying the development of conduct problems, including emotion regulation, prosocial behaviors, and parent-child relationships. The purpose of this study was to systematically review and synthesize current research on the SNAP program and conduct a meta-analysis. Following PRISMA guidelines, PubMed and PyscINFO were searc

Racism and alcohol-related problems among Black adults: The role of negative emotionality to experiencing racism.

INTRODUCTION: Although Black Americans tend to consume less alcohol than non-Hispanic/Latine White Americans, Black Americans who do drink alcohol appear at especially high risk for negative alcohol-related problems. This alcohol-based health disparity indicates a need to identify psycho-sociocultural factors that may play a role in drinking and related problems to inform prevention and treatment efforts. Minority stress-based models posit that stressors such as racism increase negative emotions, which may be associated with using substances such as alcohol to cope with negative emotions. Yet,

An initial study of family accommodation in children and adolescents with chronic tic disorders.

This initial study examined the nature, incidence, and clinical correlates of family accommodation in youth with tic disorders, and validated a brief self-report measure of tic-related family accommodation, the Tic Family Accommodation Scale (TFAS). Seventy-five youth aged 6-18 who were diagnosed with a tic disorder and their parent completed a diagnostic clinical interview, and clinician and parent-report measures of tic severity, depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, behavioral problems, family accommodation and impairment. An exploratory factor analysis of the TFAS showed a two-factor stru

Overweight trajectories and psychosocial adjustment among adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: Few studies have investigated overweight trajectories and psychosocial adjustment among adolescents. We conducted analyses with data from the multisite Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD). METHODS: The sample included 1350 youths born in 1991. Data consisted of repeated measures of weight, height, and multiple subscales of internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems measured by the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) from age 9 to age 15. RESULTS: Three trajectory patterns were identified: never/rarely overweight/obese (59.5%), late start/light overweight

Comparative epidemiology of betel nut use versus ecstasy use among Taiwanese adolescents: findings from a national survey.

AIMS: To investigate whether variation may exist in betel nut- and ecstasy-involved adolescents in terms of sociobehavioral characteristics, the experience of psychoactive substance use, and behavioral/emotional problems. METHODS: Students (n = 53,528) aged 12-18 sampled via stratified, multistage, random cluster sampling in 2004, 2005, and 2006 throughout Taiwan were categorized into four groups: betel nut- and ecstasy-naïve (n = 51,009), betel nut use only (n = 1965), ecstasy use only (n = 196), and use of both (n = 152). Participants completed a questionnaire with information on sociodemog

Negative behavior during marital conflict is associated with immunological down-regulation.

Although increased morbidity and mortality have been reliably associated with social isolation and less satisfying personal relationships, relatively little is known about the underlying biopsychosocial mechanisms. We assessed problem-solving behaviors and changes in immune function in 90 newlywed couples who were admitted to a hospital research unit for 24 hours. Subjects who exhibited more negative or hostile behaviors during a 30-minute discussion of marital problems showed greater decrements over 24 hours relative to low negative subjects on four functional immunological assays (natural ki

The role of mitochondrial bioenergetics and oxidative stress in depressive behavior in recurrent concussion model in mice.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a public health problem in which even though 80 to 90% of cases are considered mild, usually starts a sequence of neurological disorders that can last a considerable time. Most of the research of this injury has been focused on oxidative stress and functional deficits; however, mechanisms that underlie the development of neuropsychiatric disorders remain little researched. Due to this, the present authors decided to investigate whether recurrent concussion protocols alter depressive-like phenotype behavior, and whether mitochondria play an indispensable role in

Recollections of pressure to eat during childhood, but not picky eating, predict young adult eating behavior.

Picky eating is a childhood behavior that vexes many parents and is a symptom in the newer diagnosis of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) in adults. Pressure to eat, a parental controlling feeding practice aimed at encouraging a child to eat more, is associated with picky eating and a number of other childhood eating concerns. Low intuitive eating, an insensitivity to internal hunger and satiety cues, is also associated with a number of problem eating behaviors in adulthood. Whether picky eating and pressure to eat are predictive of young adult eating behavior is relatively uns

The neural bases of host plant selection in a Neuroecology framework.

Understanding how animals make use of environmental information to guide behavior is a fundamental problem in the field of neuroscience. Similarly, the field of ecology seeks to understand the role of behavior in shaping interactions between organisms at various levels of organization, including population-, community- and even ecosystem-level scales. Together, the newly emerged field of "Neuroecology" seeks to unravel this fundamental question by studying both the function of neurons at many levels of the sensory pathway and the interactions between organisms and their natural environment. Psychometric comparisons of the Pictorial Child Behavior Checklist with the standard version of the instrument.

The low level of literacy and lack of language proficiency possessed by some immigrants from low socioeconomic status backgrounds create communication barriers in the healthcare setting, thus interfering with their ability to access appropriate medical care and their subsequent participation in medical research. Adding pictorial descriptions to questionnaires appears to improve patient response when literacy levels are low. Psychometric results from 4 studies using a pictorial version of the Child Behavior Checklist (Pictorial Child Behavior Checklist, or PCBCL) to assess behavioral and emotio

[Pathophysiology of NREM parasomnias].

Parasomnias are physical, behavioral and experiental phenomena ocurring during entry or along the sleep or on arousal/awakening. The behavior includes movements, emotional, perceptual or dreaming experience, frequently containing manifestations of autonomic nervous system. Parasomnias are devided into primary (ocurring etiher in NREM or REM sleep) and secondary (following organic system disease manifested during sleep). Primary parasomnias are further devided into those that appear during NREM, REM or states of consciousnes that do not respect boundaries between wake and sleep. Parasomnias rep

Concurrent schedules of positive and negative reinforcement: differential-impact and differential-outcomes hypotheses.

Considerable evidence from outside of operant psychology suggests that aversive events exert greater influence over behavior than equal-sized positive-reinforcement events. Operant theory is largely moot on this point, and most operant research is uninformative because of a scaling problem that prevents aversive events and those based on positive reinforcement from being directly compared. In the present investigation, humans' mouse-click responses were maintained on similarly structured, concurrent schedules of positive (money gain) and negative (avoidance of money loss) reinforcement.
