BACKGROUND: A Blauth IIIB hypoplastic thumb is a significant functional and cosmetic problem for the developing hand in children. The gold s … rschner wires or graft non-union, but it decreased to 6% after reoperation. Five patients underwent tendon transfers.
CONCLUSIONS: The presented technique is based on principles such as vascularized metatarsophalangeal joint transplants. It may be an option for stabilizing a hypoplastic thumb if parents do not consent to pollicization. Having microsurgical skill …

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the epidemiology, incidence rate, incidence proportion, and prevalence of Achilles tendon ruptures (ATRs) in professional footballers and their performance after the injury.
DATA SOURCES: Professional male footballers participating in Serie A in 11 consecutive seasons (2008/2009-2018/2019) were screened to identify ATRs through the online football archive transfermarkt.com. Exposure in matches and training was calculated. The number of matches played in the 5 seasons before and after ATRs was obtained, when possible, together with transfers to a different team or partic

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare but severe genetic disorder in which acute inflammation elicits progressive heterotopic ossification in the muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Classic FOP is caused by the R206H mutation in ALK2/ACVR1. While several activin receptor-like kinase 2 (ALK2) inhibitors were found to be efficacious in animal models of FOP, most of the ALK2 (R206H) inhibitors lacked sufficient oral bioavailability for efficacy. Previously, the synthesis of a series of novel bis-heteroaryl pyrazole-based ALK2 (R206H) inhibitors that achieved both substantial potency

The mean outcome score was 17.6/20, with one patient with excellent, six with good, one with fair, and none with poor scores. One patient experienced recurrent radial deviation aroun …

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: While there is much discussion about tendinopathy in the literature, there is little reference to the less common condition of iliopsoas tendinopathy, and no documentation of the condition in runners. The iliopsoas is a major decelerator of the hip and eccentric loading of the iliopsoas is an important component of energy transfer during running. Eccentric training is a thoroughly researched method of treating tendinopathy but has shown mixed results. The purpose of this case report is to describe the rehabilitation of a runner with iliopsoas tendinopathy, and demonstra

CONCLUSIONS: Time from injury to surgery does not seem to be a risk factor for developing an iatrogenic radial nerve palsy when treating diaphyseal humerus fractures. Patients with distal fractures, and those with previous fracture implants, are …

BACKGROUND: Because of detachment of the pectoralis minor and variation of the vector of the conjoint tendons, we hypothesized that the Latarjet procedure may alter scapular position and motion. The purpose of this study was to evaluate scapular position and motion in patients who underwent a Latarjet or a modified iliac crest bone graft transfer (ICBGT) procedure (J-bone graft).
METHODS: Forty-six consecutive patients treated for recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation between 2010 and 2012 were retrospectively enrolled. Twenty-three were treated with a Latarjet and 23 with an ICBGT procedur

PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcome of 20 claw hands corrected with the Zancolli lasso procedure.
METHODS: 20 patients aged 7 to 48 (mean, 28) years with claw hand deformity for a mean of 33.3 months secondary to leprosy (n=17), traumatic ulnar nerve injury (n=2), or tardy ulnar nerve palsy (n=1) underwent the Zancolli lasso procedure, in which the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) of the middle finger was divided in to 4 slips (one for each finger) and reattached to itself after passing through the proximal pulley. Deformity, power, movement, and function of the hands were evaluated before a

Lip reconstruction is best suited to the dictum of replacement of like tissue with like. The use of the remaining lip in the use of the lip reconstruction becomes more difficult as the size of the defect increases. The use of local tissue for subtotal lower lip loss problems like microstomia and facial and commissure distortion are real risks. The use of free tissue transfer becomes especially an attractive option when in addition to the lip there is associated loss of other aesthetic units and/or mandibular bone loss. The potential value of local perioral tissue is more likely to maintain dyn

Seventeen patients who underwent soft-tissue reconstruction of various anatomic regions of the foot and ankle, using the radial forearm fasciocutaneous free flap, are reported. The procedures were performed between January, 1992 and December, 1998. Indications for reconstruction included diabetes and/or vascular insufficiency (four patients), soft-tissue defects (six patients), and chronic osteomyelitis (seven patients). The weight-bearing surface of the foot was involved in 16 patients. Defects ranged in size from 35 to 206 cm2 (mean: 86.2 cm2). At a mean follow-up of 3.8 years, the radial fo

PURPOSE: A single bout of unaccustomed eccentric exercise can protect against subsequent strength loss and soreness, with protection sometimes transferring to the unexercised contralateral limb. The contralateral repeated bout effect (CL-RBE) may be relevant for muscle-tendon units with comparatively small fascicle strains during eccentric tasks, such as the triceps surae, but has not been established in this muscle group. We tested whether unilateral eccentric heel drops produced evidence consistent with the CL-RBE in the triceps surae and whether its expression differed after 2- and 7-day in

PURPOSE: The branching pattern of the deep motor branch of the ulnar nerve (DBUN) in the hand is complex. The anatomy of the motor branch innervating the fourth lumbrical (4L), where paralysis results in a claw hand deformity after ulnar nerve injury, is not well defined. This cadaver study focused on mapping and defining anatomical landmarks in relation to the motor branch to the 4L.
METHODS: Ten fresh-frozen cadaver hands were dissected. The DBUN was exposed and followed distally, identifying all motor branches, until the branch to the 4L was seen. The small finger flexor tendons were refle

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic nerve injuries can result from surgical damage. Thus, physicians should be aware of the risk factors and procedures t … at our hospital included neurolysis (55%), nerve grafts (29%), direct suture procedures (10%), and tendon transfers (6%).
CONCLUSIONS: We believe that wide dissemination of the results obtained in this study will reduce the incidence of iatrogenic peripheral nerve injuries and increase the speed of referrals to specialized centers.

PURPOSE: The medial patellotibial ligament (MPTL), the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL), and the medial patellomeniscal ligament (MPML) support the stability of the patellofemoral joint. The purpose of this systematic review was to report the surgical techniques and clinical outcomes of the repair or reconstruction of the MPTL in isolation or concomitant with the MPFL and/or other procedures.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted. Inclusion criteria were articles in the English language that reported clinical outcomes of the reconstruction of the MPTL in isolation
