[Long loop reflexes--a clinically relevant method].

Late reflex potentials have been know for a long time. On the upper limb it has been proven that these potentials have a transcortical pathway. The electrical stimulation of nerve trunks is easily applicable in clinical practice and produces clear long-loop responses. The typical results can be reproduced for extrapyramidal, cerebellar and pyramidal lesions by this method. The long-loop reflex is sensitive to lesions in the course of the pyramidal tract.

A Closed-Loop ta-VNS System Synchronized with BCI-Based Motor Training for Post-Stroke Upper Limb Rehabilitation.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (ta-VNS) involves applying electrical stimulation via electrodes to the auricular concha. This activates vagal afferent fibers, initiating an ascending pathway from the periphery to the brainstem, which ultimately stimulates central vagal projections and promotes neural plasticity. Previous studies have demonstrated that combining ta-VNS with motor training offers synergistic benefits for motor recovery after stroke. However, these combined approaches typically employ open-loop stimulation with fixed parameters, lacking real-time closed-loop res

Legumain-Mediated Activation of PAR2 Contributes to Mechanical Hypersensitivity in a Rat Model of Tongue Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Legumain, also known as asparaginyl endopeptidase or δ-secretase, is a cysteine protease that plays a significant role in various biological and pathological processes. This study investigated the role of the legumain-protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR2) signaling pathway in mechanical hypersensitivity in a rat model of tongue cancer. METHODS: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cells were injected subcutaneously into the tongue. Mechanical head withdrawal reflex threshold (MHWT) was recorded after SCC inoculation or activated-legumain administration. The expression of legumain in the ca

The potential role of the anterior insular cortex and interoception on dyspnea in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Dyspnea (the perception of breathing discomfort) can be an immensely debilitating symptom for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and is not fully reflective of physiological measures of disease severity. We propose that the anterior insular cortex (AIC) and its key role in interoception (the perception of signals from within the body) are important mediators of dyspnea symptomology. Interoception encompasses respiratory motor drive, corollary discharge, sensory afferents, central neural integration, error signal generation, gating, decision processing and behavioral adapt

Circadian rhythm mechanism in the suprachiasmatic nucleus and its relation to the olfactory system.

Animals need sleep, and the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the center of the circadian rhythm, plays an important role in determining the timing of sleep. The main input to the suprachiasmatic nucleus is the retinohypothalamic tract, with additional inputs from the intergeniculate leaflet pathway, the serotonergic afferent from the raphe, and other hypothalamic regions. Within the suprachiasmatic nucleus, two of the major subtypes are vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-positive neurons and arginine-vasopressin (AVP)-positive neurons. VIP neurons are important for light entrainment and synchroni

The offset auditory brainstem response in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus): Evidence for multiple underlying processes.

The auditory brainstem response (ABR) to stimulus onset has been extensively used to investigate dolphin hearing. The mechanisms underlying this onset response have been thoroughly studied in mammals. In contrast, the ABR evoked by sound offset has received relatively little attention. To build upon previous observations of the dolphin offset ABR, a series of experiments was conducted to (1) determine the cochlear places responsible for response generation and (2) examine differences in response morphologies when using toneburst versus noiseburst stimuli. Measurements were conducted with seven

Understanding the Central Nervous System Symptoms of Rotavirus: A Qualitative Review.

This qualitative review on rotavirus infection and its complications in the central nervous system (CNS) aims to understand the gut-brain mechanisms that give rise to CNS driven symptoms such as vomiting, fever, feelings of sickness, convulsions, encephalitis, and encephalopathy. There is substantial evidence to indicate the involvement of the gut-brain axis in symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. The underlying mechanisms are, however, not rotavirus specific, they represent evolutionarily conserved survival mechanisms for protection against pathogen entry and invasion. The reviewed studies

Maturation of thalamocortical synapses in the somatosensory cortex depends on neocortical AKAP5 expression.

Sensory cortex topographic maps consist of organized arrays of thalamocortical afferents (TCAs) that project into distinct areas of the cortex. Formation of topographic maps in sensory cortices is a prerequisite for functional maturation of the neocortex. Studies have shown that the formation of topographic maps and the maturation of thalamocortical synapses in the somatosensory cortex depend on the cyclic adenosine 5'-monophosphate-(cAMP)-protein kinase A (PKA) signaling pathway. AKAP5 is a scaffold protein (also called AKAP79 in humans or AKAP150 in rodents; AKAP79/150) that serves as a sign

Analgesic effect of a broad-spectrum dihydropyridine inhibitor of voltage-gated calcium channels.

Voltage-activated calcium channels are important facilitators of nociceptive transmission in the primary afferent pathway. Consequently, molecules that block these channels are of potential use as pain therapeutics. Our group has recently reported on the identification of a novel class of dihydropyridines (DHPs) that included compounds with preferential selectivity for T-type over L-type channels. Among those compounds, M4 was found to be an equipotent inhibitor of both Cav1.2 L- and Cav3.2 T-type calcium channels. Here, we have further characterized the effects of this compound on other types

Pacemaker neurons within newborn spinal pain circuits.

Spontaneous activity driven by "pacemaker" neurons, defined by their intrinsic ability to generate rhythmic burst firing, contributes to the development of sensory circuits in many regions of the immature CNS. However, it is unknown whether pacemaker-like neurons are present within central pain pathways in the neonate. Here, we provide evidence that a subpopulation of glutamatergic interneurons within lamina I of the rat spinal cord exhibits oscillatory burst firing during early life, which occurs independently of fast synaptic transmission. Pacemaker neurons were distinguished by a higher rat

Carotid body oxygen sensing.

The carotid body (CB) is a neural crest-derived organ whose major function is to sense changes in arterial oxygen tension to elicit hyperventilation in hypoxia. The CB is composed of clusters of neuron-like glomus, or type-I, cells enveloped by glia-like sustentacular, or type-II, cells. Responsiveness of CB to acute hypoxia relies on the inhibition of O(2)-sensitive K(+) channels in glomus cells, which leads to cell depolarisation, Ca(2+) entry and release of transmitters that activate afferent nerve fibres. Although this model of O(2) sensing is generally accepted, the molecular mechanisms u

Plasticity of inwardly rectifying conductances following a corticospinal lesion in human subjects.

This study investigated whether there are changes in the excitability of motor axons in peripheral nerves of patients with corticospinal lesions, reflecting plasticity of the motoneuron due to altered descending drives and/or changes in afferent feedback. The excitability of motor and sensory axons in peripheral nerves of the affected limb of 11 patients with unilateral hemiparesis due to stroke was compared with that for the unaffected limbs and with data for 12 age-matched controls. There was significantly less accommodation to hyperpolarizing currents in motor axons on the affected side. Th

Hemihyperaesthesia and hyperresponsiveness resembling central pain syndrome in a dog with a forebrain oligodendroglioma.

A 4-year-old male Boxer was presented with neurological signs referable to a right forebrain lesion that was confirmed with computed tomography. Whilst characteristic signs of a unilateral forebrain lesion were observed, the dominant and striking finding was a right-sided hemisensory disturbance characterised by hyperaesthesia and hyperresponsiveness. Necropsy revealed a gelatinous mass confined to the right forebrain that was identified histologically as an oligodendroglioma. The lesion was centred on the internal capsule and involved ventral frontal and temporal lobes and the ventrolateral t

Neural regulation of the vas deferens in the rat: an electrophysiological analysis.

Electrophysiological analysis of the neural control of the vas deferens was performed in urethan-anesthetized rats. Intraluminal distension (0.2 ml/min) or electrical stimulation of hypogastric (threshold 1-5 V, 20 Hz) and pelvic nerves (2-5 V, 20 Hz) produced contractions of the vas deferens. Distension-evoked contractile activity was not abolished by nicotinic ganglionic blockade or ipsilateral hypogastric and pelvic nerve transection. Contractions following hypogastric nerve stimulation were abolished by prazosin, while pelvic nerve-evoked responses were partially blocked by atropine. Hypog

The hyperekplexias and their relationship to the normal startle reflex.

The startle response to unexpected auditory and somaesthetic stimulation was studied in 8 patients with hereditary or symptomatic hyperekplexia. It was abnormal in its resistance to habituation and in its exaggerated motor response. Both noise and taps to the face and head elicited a normal early blink response, separate from the subsequent true startle reflex. The earliest reflex EMG activity recorded after the blink was in sternocleidomastoid. EMG activity in masseter, and trunk and limb muscles followed later. This pattern of muscle recruitment suggests a brainstem origin for the abnormal s

Some reflections on the phylogeny and function of the pineal.

The pineal gland is a universal feature of vertebrate organization and has been implicated in the control of rhythmic adaptations to daily and seasonal cycles. This paper considers three aspects of pineal function; the generation of a rhythmical endocrine signal (the nocturnal synthesis of melatonin) and the use of the signal in the regulation of circadian and photoperiodic functions. The shape of the nocturnal signal is determined by an interaction of afferent neural control and biochemical processes intrinsic to the pinealocyte. The nature of the effect of the signal upon circadian systems i

Histochemistry of acetylcholinesterase and immunocytochemistry of an acetylcholine receptor-like antigen in the brain of the honeybee.

A histochemical staining method for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and an antiserum raised against nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (AChR) of locust nervous tissue were applied in order to reveal certain candidates of cholinergic pathways in the brain of the honeybee. The AChE staining marked layers in the optic lobes, fibers connecting the two brain hemispheres, and fiber tracts as well as soma clusters within the protocerebrum. The calycal input regions of the mushroom bodies were labelled, whereas the intrinsic Kenyon cells showed no staining. Although the antennal afferents projecting into t

Angiotensin II receptor binding and the baroreflex pathway.

Angiotensin II (Ang II) acts centrally to modulate autonomic activity and cardiovascular function. Using in vitro autoradiography we have determined the distribution of putative receptors for ANG II in brain regions associated with the baroreflex pathway. Ang II receptor binding sites were observed in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), the dorsal motor nucleus of vagus, the rostral and caudal ventrolateral medulla and intermediolateral cell column of the spinal cord. Receptor binding sites were also observed in the nodose ganglion and in association with nerve fibres in the heart. Nodose

Morphometric and dendritic analysis of fascia dentata granule cells in human aging and senile dementia.

In this study the cellular morphology in the human fascia dentata of 5 very old demented cases (4 Alzheimer's disease and 1 multi-infarct dementia patients) was compared with 5 (very) old controls cases. The postmortem delay in fixation was for all cases within 3.5 h. In the demented group, a significant reduction in thickness of the molecular layer, density of dendritic spines in the middle third of the molecular layer and total dendritic length (+/- 30%) was found. The number of dendritic segments, indicative of the branching frequency showed no difference. In both the control and the dement

The effects of delaying reward on choice preference in rats with hippocampal or selective septal lesions.

Two experiments are reported in which rats were trained to choose one of two goal arms in a Y-maze, for water reward. In one arm, the rats always received water (the continuously reinforced-CRF-arm). In the other arm the rats only sometimes received water (the partially reinforced-PRF-arm). During the critical test phase in both experiments, we delayed the reward in the CRF arm only by 10 s. Experiment 1 tested intact rats given saline injections, or injections of chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride (Librium, 5 mg/kg), and rats with hippocampal or cortical control lesions. When reward was immediate
