Development of a cost-effective ovine antibody-based therapy against SARS-CoV-2 infection and contribution of antibodies specific to the spike subunit proteins.

Antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 are important to generate protective immunity, with convalescent plasma one of the first therapies approved. An alternative source of polyclonal antibodies suitable for upscaling would be more amendable to regulatory approval and widespread use. In this study, sheep were immunised with SARS-CoV-2 whole spike protein or one of the subunit proteins: S1 and S2. Once substantial antibody titres were generated, plasma was collected and samples pooled for each antigen. Non-specific antibodies were removed via affinity-purification to yield candidate products for testing

Q fever outbreak in a goat herd--diagnostic investigations and measures for control.

This is a case report about a Q fever infection of a goat herd with abortions and excretions of pathogens accompanied by human infection and disease. Following a diagnosis of Q fever in a goat herd, all animals were vaccinated with an inactivated phase 1 vaccine. The herd was kept isolated and animals were neither removed nor introduced so that monitoring of the course of the Q fever infection of the individual dam was possible. Over a period of two years following the diagnosis of a Q fever infection (abortion), diagnostic investigations on detection of Coxiella (C.) burnetii were performed u

State-of-the-art treatment of coccidioidomycosis skeletal infections.

Coccidioidomycosis is a fungal infection endemic to the southwestern United States. Typically a respiratory illness, coccidioidomycosis can rarely present as extrapulmonary infection. Skeletal coccidioidomycosis occurs in 20% to 50% of disseminated infections. Skeletal coccidioidomycosis is a chronic and progressive infection that eventually results in bone destruction and loss of function and often involves adjacent structures, such as joints, muscles, and tendons and other soft tissues. Sinus tract formation may occur. This infection may be multifocal. Although radiographs, white blood cell

[Outbreak of Q fever and seroprevalence in a rural population from Soria Province].

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to describe an outbreak of acute fever in a rural town from Soria (Spain) in the spring of 1998 and to know the prevalence of IgG antibodies to Coxiella burnetii in this population. METHODS: 1. Outbreak of Q fever: epidemiological, clinical and analytical data were obtained by standardised questionnaire and the clinical records from all clinical cases. These cases were confirmed by complement fixation test.2. Seroprevalence: 253 sera were chosen by not probabilistic sampling of convenience of sera samples collected between 1 September 1996 and 28 February

Varicella-zoster virus DNA in the oesophageal myenteric plexus in achalasia.

In a search for past or present infection with herpes viruses, serum antibody titres to herpes simplex type 1 virus, cytomegalovirus, and varicella-zoster virus were measured by complement fixation test in 58 patients with achalasia. Serum was also taken from 40 age and sex matched patients without oesophageal symptoms who formed a control group. All titres were low, and those for herpes simplex type 1 virus and cytomegalovirus did not differ in the achalasia patients and the controls. However, the incidence of varicella-zoster virus antibodies was significantly greater in the achalasia than i
