The binding of Ca(2+)- and Ba(2+)-calmodulin to caldesmon and its functional consequence was investigated with three different calmodulin mutants. Two calmodulin mutants have pairs of cysteine residues substituted and oxidized to a disulphide bond in either the N- or C-terminal lobe (C41/75 and C85/112). The third mutant has phenylalanine-92 replaced by alanine (F92A). DNA crosslink-inducing drugs are widely used in clinical settings for treatment of solid tumors. Double strand breaks (DSBs) that arise during interstrand crosslink (ICL) repair are crucial determinants of the therapeutic response, as they lead to cell death if not repaired. DSBs can be repaired through non-homologous end joining (NHEJ), theta-mediated end joining (TMEJ), and homologous recombination (HR). HR is considered a major pathway for repairing DSBs induced during ICL repair. In this study, we examine the roles of NHEJ, TMEJ, and HR in ICL repair using mouse embryonic stem (mES) cells.

Decellularized extra-cellular matrix (ECM) has been studied as an alternative to anti-adhesive biomaterials and cartilage acellular matrix (CAM) has been shown to inhibit postoperative adhesion in several organs. This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of glutaraldehyde (GA) crosslinked CAM-films as anti-adhesion barriers for peripheral nerve injury. The films were successfully fabricated and showed improved physical properties such as mechanical strength, swelling ratio, and lengthened degradation period while maintaining the microstructure and chemical composition after GA crosslinking.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to determine the safety and efficacy of corneal collagen cross-linking for keratoconus in pediatric patients with and without vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC).
METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of 89 eyes of 58 patients <18 years of age that underwent corneal collagen cross-linking for progressive keratoconus; inclusion criteria included a minimum of 2-year follow-up after cross-linking. The main outcomes measures included keratometry, pachymetry, vision, and complications following epithelial-off cross-linking with the Dresden protocol.

Purpose: To compare the subclinical inflammatory response (as measured by anterior chamber flare) induced after standard (3 mW/cm2, 30 min) and accelerated (18 mW/cm2, 5 min) corneal cross-linking (CXL). Methods: In this comparative, non-randomized study, patients with progressive keratoconus who underwent standard or accelerated CXL were studied.
