Correlation between anxiety, depression, and social stress in young patients with thoracolumbar spine fractures.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic injuries, such as falling, car accidents, and crushing mostly cause spinal fractures in young and middle-aged people, and > 50% of them are thoracolumbar fractures. This kind of fracture is easily combined with serious injuries to peripheral nerves and soft tissues, which causes paralysis of the lower limbs if there is no timely rehabilitation treatment. Young patients with thoracolumbar fractures find it difficult to recover after the operation, and they are prone to depression, low self-esteem, and other negative emotions. AIM: To investigate the association between an

Effect of NeuroSAFE-guided RARP versus standard RARP on erectile function and urinary continence in patients with localised prostate cancer (NeuroSAFE PROOF): a multicentre, patient-blinded, randomised, controlled phase 3 trial.

BACKGROUND: Sparing the periprostatic neurovascular bundles during robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) improves postoperative erectile function and early urinary continence recovery. The NeuroSAFE technique, a standardised frozen section analysis, enables accurate real-time detection of positive surgical margins during nerve-sparing, increasing the likelihood of successful nerve preservation. However, the impact of the technique on patient outcomes remains uncertain. We aimed to assess the effect of NeuroSAFE-guided RARP versus standard RARP on erectile function and urinary continence.

Early enteral nutrition within 24 hours of lower gastrointestinal surgery versus later commencement for length of hospital stay and postoperative complications.

BACKGROUND: This is an update of the review last published in 2011. It focuses on early postoperative enteral nutrition after lower gastrointestinal surgery. Traditional management consisted of 'nil by mouth', where patients receive fluids followed by solids after bowel function has returned. Although several trials have reported lower incidence of infectious complications and faster wound healing upon early feeding, other trials have shown no effect. The immediate advantage of energy intake (carbohydrates, protein or fat) could enhance recovery with fewer complications, and this warrants a sy

Combining the tunneled coronally advanced flap (TCAF) with internal frenectomy-vestibular incision subperiosteal tunnel access (IF-VISTA) for the treatment of mandibular anterior gingival recessions: A technique report.

INTRODUCTION: Gingival recession (GR) defects in the mandibular anterior region represent a particularly challenging scenario in periodontal plastic surgery, owing to a thin soft tissue phenotype, minimal keratinized tissue, limited vestibular depth, and the frequent presence of a prominent labial frenum. While significant advances have been made in root coverage procedures for the anterior mandible, simultaneously addressing these coexisting anatomical factors in a single, minimally invasive procedure remains a clinical challenge. METHODS: This technique report describes the combined applica

Efficacy of Platelet-Rich Plasma, Mesenchymal Stromal Cells, and Hyaluronic Acid in Preventing Adhesions After Zone II Flexor Tendon Repair: A Narrative Review.

Zone II flexor tendon injuries remain among the most challenging conditions in hand surgery due to the region's complex anatomy and high rates of postoperative complications, particularly adhesion formation and the resulting loss of range of motion. Although platelet-rich plasma (PRP), mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) therapies, and hyaluronic acid (HA) have demonstrated therapeutic potential in other musculoskeletal conditions, their effectiveness in preventing postoperative adhesions following zone II flexor tendon repair, specifically, remains unclear. A comprehensive review of the literature

Appropriateness of learning curve for carotid artery stenting: an analysis of periprocedural complications.

OBJECTIVES: Cerebral embolism is the first cause of neurologic complications of carotid artery stenting (CAS). A large debate has been raised to identify the caseload necessary for an appropriate learning curve before systematic use of CAS. This study examined (1) the timing of periprocedural complications during CAS and how these complications vary over time to identify factors that contribute to neurologic morbidity and (2) a sufficient number of procedures for adequate training. METHODS: During 2001 to 2006, 627 CAS procedures with cerebral protection devices (CPD) were performed in a sing

Squash racquets. A review of physiology and medicine.

Squash is a moderate to high intensity sport which demands specific fitness. Squash at any level places a high demand on the aerobic system for energy delivery during play and recovery. In addition, the sport requires bursts of intense, anaerobic physical activity involving the lactic anaerobic energy system. Players must possess appropriate levels of local muscular endurance, strength, power, flexibility and speed, combined with agility, balance and co-ordination. Irrespective of the standard of play, aerobic fitness training and specific anaerobic training should be undertaken by all who pla

Changes in physical activity behaviors and influencing factors among children and adolescents with heart disease after hospital discharge: a 3-month follow-up study.

UNLABELLED: Regular physical activity is essential for the rehabilitation and long-term recovery of children and adolescents with heart disease. Many studies have shown that low levels of physical activity are associated with poor health outcomes. There is a lack of longitudinal research on the dynamic changes in physical activity and their influencing factors in children and adolescents with heart disease following hospital discharge after cardiac surgery or conservative management. Therefore, this study aimed to compare physical activity levels in children and adolescents with heart disease

Pediatric cervical kyphosis in the MRI era (1984-2008) with long-term follow up: literature review.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical kyphosis is rare in the pediatric population. It may be syndromic or acquired secondary to laminectomy, neoplasia, or trauma. Regardless, this should be avoided to prevent progressive spinal deformity and neurological deficit. Long-term follow-up is needed to evaluate fusion status, spine growth, potential instability, and neurological function. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A retrospective review of 27 children (6 months to 16 years) with cervical kyphotic deformity was performed and limited to the MRI era until 2008, to provide a long-term follow-up after which complex instrume

Influence of Medial Support Screws on the Maintenance of Fracture Reduction after Locked Plating of Proximal Humerus Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Technical aspects of the correct placement of medial support locking screws in the locking plate for proximal humerus fractures remain incompletely understood. This study was to evaluate the clinical relationship between the number of medial support screws and the maintenance of fracture reduction after locked plating of proximal humerus fractures. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 181 patients who had been surgically treated for proximal humeral fractures (PHFs) with a locking plate between September 2007 and June 2013. All cases were then subdivided into one of four groups a

Large-Scale Production and Therapeutic Evaluation of Exosomes for Cancer Treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer remains one of the most prevalent and deadly malignancies worldwide, representing a major global health challenge. According to the latest global cancer statistics, lung cancer accounts for approximately 11.6% of all new cancer diagnoses and 19.8% of cancer-related deaths, making it the leading cause of cancer mortality.1 Current therapeutic strategies, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted therapies, vary depending on the histological type and stage of the tumor. While these approaches have improved survival in select patient populations, their

Abstracts for the Eighth Congress of the European Association for Neuro-Oncology (EANO) : September 12–14, 2008 Barcelona, Spain

Background: Standard treatment consisting of surgery, irradiation plus concomitant and following T is established in GBM with median survival of 15.6 months, indicating the need for further effective treatment. In several phase II studies B plus I showed impressive objective response rates (>50%) in pre-treated GBM pts with low toxicity rate, duration of response, however, was moderate. Therefore, B plus I might be an effective induction regimen for T resistant GBM patients as basis for further treatments. In colo-rectal cancer a lower dose of B plus I was effective, therefore B and I dose was

Clinical study of extrapulmonary head and neck tuberculosis in an urban setting.

Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a common inflammatory disorder that strongly impacts patients' quality of life. CRSwNP is still a challenge for ENT specialists due to its unknown pathogenesis, difficult control and frequent relapse. We tested the hypothesis that a new standardised therapeutic approach based on individual clinical-cytological grading (CCG), may improve control of the disease and prevent the needing for surgery. We analysed 204 patients suffering from bilateral CRSwNP, 145 patients of whom regularly assumed therapy, respecting the planned check-up, and were
