Congress of Neurological Surgeons Systematic Review and Evidence-Based Guideline on the Incidence of Tethered Cord Syndrome in Infants With Myelomeningocele With Prenatal Versus Postnatal Repair.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of spina bifida (SB) is higher in the developing world as compared to the United States because of folic acid deficiency during pregnancy. Advances in technology have made prenatal repair of myelomeningocele (MM) possible. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this guideline was to determine if there is a difference in the rate of development of tethered cord syndrome (TCS) in infants who had prenatal closure compared to infants who had MM repair after birth. METHODS: The Guidelines Task Force developed search terms and strategies to search PubMed and Embase for the relevant …

Positive predictive value of diagnosis coding for hemolytic anemias in the Danish National Patient Register.

PURPOSE: The nationwide public health registers in Denmark provide a unique opportunity for evaluation of disease-associated morbidity if th … mechanical reason for hemolysis such as an artificial heart valve, and patients with vitamin-B12 or folic acid deficiency were excluded. RESULTS: We identified 412 eligible patients: 249 with a congenital hemolytic anemia diagnosis and 163 with acquired hemolytic anemia diagnosis. In all, hemolysis was confirmed in 359 patients, yielding an overall PPV of 87.1% (95% c …

The role of underutilized fruits in nutritional and economic security of tribals: a review.

The tribal people of Rajasthan are severely malnourished along with multiple nutrient-deficiency disorders due to ignorance about importance of fruits and vegetables in their diets. The tribal areas are full of biodiversity having natural vegetation which is not harnessed fully. Due to which a wide gap is formed between health and optimal use of natural sources of nutrients, i.e., underutilized crops. The crops, which are neither grown commercially on large scale nor traded widely, may be termed as underutilized horticultural crops. These crops are cultivated, traded, and consumed locally. The

Cognitive dysfunction and depression in adult kidney transplant recipients: baseline findings from the FAVORIT Ancillary Cognitive Trial (FACT).

OBJECTIVE: Hyperhomocysteinemia and B-vitamin deficiency may be treatable risk factors for cognitive impairment and decline. Hyperhomocysteinemia, cognitive impairment, and depression are all common in individuals with kidney disease, including kidney transplant recipients. Accordingly, we assessed the prevalence of cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms in transplant recipients and their association with kidney function, plasma total homocysteine, and B-vitamin concentrations. SETTING: Cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from the Folic Acid for Vascular Outcome Reduction In Trans

Folbp1 promotes embryonic myocardial cell proliferation and apoptosis through the WNT signal transduction pathway.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between Folate-binding protein one (Folbp1) and embryonic cardiac proliferation, apop … s contradictory in Folbp1 gene silenced P19 cells. Folbp1 may be an important candidate mediator of folic acid deficiency-induced congenital cardiac anomalies which are induced by the dysfunction of proliferation and apoptosis of the myocardial cell, and possibly caused by the dysfunction of the Wnt signaling pathway.

Coeliac disease, epilepsy and cerebral calcifications.

Coeliac disease, epilepsy and cerebral calcifications (CEC) syndrome is a rare clinical condition. One hundred and seventy-one patients have … jects (HLA phenotype) may be responsible for seizures and CC. Moreover, a long-lasting untreated CD folic acid deficiency may cause calcifications. Probably, CEC is considered a genetic, non-inherited, ethnically and geographically restricted syndrome associated with environmental factors.

Home fortification with micronutrient sprinkles - A new approach for the prevention and treatment of nutritional anemias.

Despite global goals set by United Nations' agencies over the past decade for significant reductions in iron deficiency anemia (IDA), it remains a largely unaddressed public health problem affecting more than two billion people, one-third of the world's population. The negative impact of IDA on health and human potential are greatest in the developing world, where it is estimated that 51% of children younger than four years of age are anemic, mainly due to a diet that is inadequate in bioavailable iron. Studies in both developed and developing countries have consistently shown mental and motor

Erythropoietin and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Anemia is a frequent clinical feature with adverse prognostic effects in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). It may complicate CLL at any time during the course of the disease. Different factors concur to the occurrence of anemia in CLL, as in other lymphoproliferative diseases: leukemic bone marrow infiltration, the myelosuppressive effect of chemotherapy and inhibiting cytokines, autoimmune phenomena, hypersplenism, a poor nutritional status that leads to folic acid, vitamin B12 and iron deficiency. In addition, a defective endogenous erythropoietin (EPO) production has also be

Psychosis resulting from trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole treatment for preseptal cellulitis.

Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) is a commonly used antimicrobial agent because of its low cost, diverse antimicrobial profile, and m … ution of her symptoms 8 h later. TMP-SMX has extensive cerebrospinal fluid penetration and causes a folic acid deficiency, which may explain the rare occurrence of neuropsychiatric side effects. Ferroptosis, but Not Necroptosis, Is Important in Nephrotoxic Folic Acid-Induced AKI.

AKI is histologically characterized by necrotic cell death and inflammation. Diverse pathways of regulated necrosis have been reported to contribute to AKI, but the molecular regulators involved remain unclear. We explored the relative contributions of ferroptosis and necroptosis to folic acid (FA)-induced AKI in mice. FA-AKI in mice associates with lipid peroxidation and downregulation of glutathione metabolism proteins, features that are typical of ferroptotic cell death. We show that ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1), an inhibitor of ferroptosis, preserved renal function and decreased histologic injury

Nitrous oxide related behavioral and histopathological changes may be related to oxidative stress.

Nitrous oxide (N₂O) toxicity can result in myelin loss and hyperhomocysteinemia similar to cobalamin (Cbl) deficiency. Studies on N₂O exposure can help in understanding the mechanism of demyelination. In view of paucity of studies on N₂O toxicity in rats this study was undertaken. Six male wistar rats were exposed to 1.5L/min N₂O with 1:1 O₂ for 90 min daily for 1 month. After 1-month exposure blood homocysteine (HCY) and oxidative stress parameters glutathione (GSH) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were measured. Brain and spinal cord was subjected to histopathological examination. The ne

[Endogenous erythropoietin in patients on regular dialysis therapy].

In a group of 66 patients with chronic renal failure having regular dialyzation treatment the serum concentration of endogenous erythropoietin (EPO), haemoglobin levels (Hb), haematocrit (Ht) and serum creatinine (Cr) were assessed. The examined subjects were never treated with recombinant erythropoietin and deficiency of iron, folic acid and vitamin B12 was ruled out. Endogenous EPO was assessed by the authors own RIA method, normal values being 24-42 mU/ml. The mean EPO concentration in the whole group of patients was 37.4 +/- 15.3 mU/ml, whereby 12 patients had an EPO serum concentration hi

Anemia and activities of daily living in the Korean urban elderly population: results from the Korean Longitudinal Study on Health and Aging (KLoSHA).

This study was planned to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of anemia and its impact on health-related quality of life and activities of daily living (ADL) in elderly Koreans. Of the 1,118 randomly sampled elderly Koreans aged 65 years or older living in Seongnam, Korea, on Aug. 1, 2005, we estimated the prevalence of anemia from 695 responders. We investigated the risk factors of anemia using a merged sample of this random sample and 270 volunteers enrolled from Seongnam residents aged 85 years or older. We diagnosed anemia according to the World Health Organization criteria. The es

Wuzi Yanzong Pill protects neural tube defects by activating PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.

Neural tube defects (NTDs) are severe congenital malformations that can lead to lifelong disability. Wuzi Yanzong Pill (WYP) is an herbal formula of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that has been shown to have a protective effect against NTDs in a rodent model induced by all-trans retinoic acid (atRA), but the mechanism remains unclear. In this study, the neuroprotective effect and mechanism of WYP on NTDs were investigated in vivo using an atRA-induced mouse model and in vitro using cell injury model induced by atRA in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells and Chinese hamster dihydrofolate redu

Low Serum Vitamin B-12 Concentrations Are Prevalent in a Cohort of Pregnant Canadian Women.

BACKGROUND: Among Canadian women of reproductive age, 5% and 20% have serum vitamin B-12 concentrations indicative of deficiency (<148 pmol/L) and marginal status (148-220 pmol/L), respectively. Given the association between suboptimal vitamin B-12 and adverse pregnancy outcomes, an understanding of vitamin B-12 status during pregnancy, and factors that influence it, is required. OBJECTIVE: This prospective analysis from the PREFORM (PREnatal FOlic acid exposuRe on DNA Methylation in the newborn infant) study investigated 1) vitamin B-12 status in a cohort of Canadian pregnant women and their

High folic acid or folate combined with low vitamin B-12 status: potential but inconsistent association with cognitive function in a nationally representative cross-sectional sample of US older adults participating in the NHANES.

BACKGROUND: Potential safety concerns relative to impaired cognitive function may exist when high folic acid exposures are combined with low vitamin B-12 status. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine the relation of the coexistence of high folate and low vitamin B-12 status with cognitive function, utilizing various definitions of "high" folate status. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from older adults (≥60 y; n = 2420) from the 2011-2014 NHANES were analyzed. High folate status was defined as unmetabolized serum folic acid (UMFA) > 1 nmol/L or serum total folate > 74.1 nmol/L, and low vitamin B-12 s

The Stimulation of Neurogenesis Improves the Cognitive Status of Aging Rats Subjected to Gestational and Perinatal Deficiency of B9-12 Vitamins.

A deficiency in B-vitamins is known to lead to persistent developmental defects in various organs during early life. The nervous system is particularly affected with functional retardation in infants and young adults. In addition, even if in some cases no damage appears evident in the beginning of life, correlations have been shown between B-vitamin metabolism and neurodegenerative diseases. However, despite the usual treatment based on B-vitamin injections, the neurological outcomes remain poorly rescued in the majority of cases, compared with physiological functions. In this study, we explor

A physiological dose of oral vitamin B-12 improves hematological, biochemical-metabolic indices and peripheral nerve function in B-12 deficient Indian adolescent women.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B-12 deficiency is often considered synonymous with pernicious anemia, a rare condition in which severe malabsorption of the vitamin requires high-dose parenteral treatment. In developing countries such as India, inadequate dietary intake of B-12 due to socio-cultural factors leads to widely prevalent asymptomatic low B-12 status. In this scenario, lower doses of oral B-12 may be effective, safer and more affordable. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of oral B-12 treatment at physiological doses on hematological and biochemical indices and peripheral nerve function in B-12
