Enhancement of ursolic acid (UA), an active ingredient in hawthorn, on the uptake and metabolism of 2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-β-D-glucoside (THSG) derived from Polygonum multiflorum.

Hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida Bge.) and Polygonum multiflorum are medicinal and edible plants, with their major constituents being ursolic acid (UA) and 2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-β-D-glucoside (THSG), respectively. Prolonged or high-dose intake of THSG may induce hepatotoxicity. While these plants are commonly combined in dietary formulations, the mechanism behind their compatibility is unclear. This study investigated how UA influences the absorption and disposition of THSG to clarify this compatibility. In vitro intestinal perfusion experiments demonstrated that the hawthorn-proces

Ultrasonic-Assisted Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent Extraction of Proanthocyanidins from Lycium ruthenicum: Optimization, Kinetics, and Antioxidant Activity.

Proanthocyanidins, a new class of potent antioxidants, are recognized for their strong in vivo activity and occur in high abundance in Lycium ruthenicum. Although the extraction of these compounds from this plant has been extensively investigated, their inherent instability imposes stringent demands on the extraction process. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) have emerged as attractive alternatives for isolating bioactive constituents from plant materials thanks to their favorable biocompatibility, high extraction efficiency, and environmentally benign nature. Therefore, we have develope

Hydroxyl-Terminated Polyethylene Glycol Evades Human Pre-existing Anti-polyethylene Glycol Antibodies.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) has been extensively utilized in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical fields, especially in the realm of nanomedicines, where it serves as a pivotal excipient to prolong the nanoparticles' circulation half-life. Contrary to its historical perception as being nonimmunogenic, pre-existing anti-PEG antibodies have been widely detected in human even in individuals without prior exposure to PEGylated therapeutics and are associated with clinically relevant adverse effects of PEGylated nanomedicines including infusion reactions and hypersensitive reactions. Herein, we elucid

Evaluating the antifungal efficacy and bioactive metabolites of a traditional polyherbal aqueous formulation BioCC+ against Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium verticillioides.

Fungal contamination of cereal crops threatens global food security by compromising grain quality and introducing harmful mycotoxins that endanger human and animal health. In West Africa, the long-standing ancestral use of native plant extracts to manage fungal contamination provides sustainable and locally adaptable solutions. Building on this knowledge, BioCC+, a polyherbal aqueous formulation containing Azadirachta indica, Cymbopogon citratus, Allium sativum and Capsicum frutescens, was developed to control maize contamination during storage in Côte d'Ivoire. This study evaluated the antifu
