Antiparasitic therapy.

Parasitic diseases affect more than 2 billion people globally and cause substantial morbidity and mortality, particularly among the world's poorest people. This overview focuses on the treatment of the major protozoan and helminth infections in humans. Recent developments in antiparasitic therapy include the expansion of artemisinin-based therapies for malaria, new drugs for soil-transmitted helminths and intestinal protozoa, expansion of the indications for antiparasitic drug treatment in patients with Chagas disease, and the use of combination therapy for leishmaniasis and human African tryp

MR spectroscopy and MR perfusion character of cerebral sparganosis: a case report.

The authors report the case of a 46-year-old woman with cerebral sparganosis resulting from infection with a larva of Spirometra. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass lesion with prominent perifocal oedema in the left parietal lobe. Advanced imaging pulse sequences, including MR spectroscopy and MR perfusion, were performed. During surgery for the removal of a granuloma, the parasite was discovered and excised. Following treatment, the patient's neurological deficits markedly improved.

Intestinal parasitic infections among inhabitants of Karaj City, Tehran province, Iran in 2006-2008.

Karaj is an area with large influx of refugee people in Iran. To increase knowledge about parasitic infections, we carried out this research during 2006-2008. We recorded the stool examination results and some of their personal characteristics. A total of 13,915 human stools were examined, and 649 (4.7%) were positive for intestinal parasites. Among them, 13 (0.09%) had worm and 636 (4.6%) had protozoan infections. Maximum infections belonged to Giardia intestinalis, and 534 (3.8%) samples had this infection. Other parasitic infections included Entamoeba coli (0.39%), Entamoeba histolytica (0.

Evaluation of the impact of overseas pre-departure treatment for infection with intestinal parasites among Montagnard refugees migrating from Cambodia to North Carolina.

We evaluated the effectiveness of an overseas pre-departure regimen of five days of albendazole for presumptive treatment of intestinal parasites by examining stool specimens in treated and untreated Montagnard refugees after arrival in the United States. Among 815 refugees evaluated, fully treated refugees had a significantly lower prevalence of helminths (11 [1.4%] of 777), specifically hookworm and Ascaris lumbricoides, than untreated pregnant women (3 [20%] of 15) (P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that treatment was associated with significantly lower rates of infection with helmin

[Toxocara spp. and other helminths in squares and parks of Ciudad Bolívar, Bolivar State (Venezuela)].

INTRODUCTION: Visceral larva migrans, a syndrome observed in humans, is caused by larva of parasitic helminths, such as Toxocara spp., which usually infect dogs and cats. Among the risk factors involved in the incidence of this syndrome, the size of these animal populations is particularly important. Ciudad Bolívar (Bolivar State, Venezuela) is a city with a large dog population. This fact has led to an effort to determine of prevalence of eggs from Toxocara spp. and other helminths in public squares and parks in this city. METHODS: Twenty-five squares and parks were selected from five areas

Epidemiology of helminth infections and their relationship to clinical malaria in southwest Uganda.

It has recently been suggested that helminth infections may adversely influence susceptibility to other infections, including malaria. To investigate this hypothesis in a sub-Saharan African setting, surveys of helminth infections were conducted in 2003 among individuals who had been under weekly active case detection for clinical malaria during the preceding 18 months in four villages in Kabale District, southwest Uganda. Overall, 47.3% of individuals had at least one intestinal nematode species infection: hookworm, Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura were detected in 32.1, 17.4 and

The alterations in genetic apparatus of somatic and generative cells of the host caused by helminths metabolites.

Alterations in the genetic apparatus of mice bone marrow cells and testicles caused by Hymenolepis nana, Ascaris suum and Toxocara canis metabolites have been investigated by means of micronuclear test application. The activity of spermatogenesis has been investigated at experimental hymenolepidosis, migrating ascariasis and toxocarosis with the use of 3H-timidine. Helminths metabolites have been established to exert a mutagenic effect on somatic cells of bone marrow, spermatogonies and also on the generative cells (spermatides) of helminths in invaded mice. The concurrent increase in micronuc

The behaviour of Homo sapiens, the forgotten factor in the transmission of tropical disease.

The behaviour of the pathogens responsible for tropical disease and the behaviour of the hosts other than man are both studied in great detail, but the behaviour of man, the third component in these cycles of transmission, is for the most part totally and inexplicably disregarded. Even when the pathogens are actively brought to us through the agency of an arthropod host, we too often ease the passage of the vectors either by unthinkingly providing facilities for their breeding or by neglecting the simple steps that can be taken to prevent their feeding on us. The problem resolves itself into t

Impact of ivermectin mass drug administration on burden of soil-transmitted helminths in onchocerciasis control and elimination programs, Yeki district, southwest Ethiopia.

Community-directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTi) is the primary strategy employed to control and eliminate human onchocerciasis in Ethiopia. After long-term mass distribution for onchocerciasis, ivermectin is expected to have additional benefits beyond the envisioned targets by reducing the burden of other co-endemic parasitic infections as to STHs. To date, studies focused on the collateral impact of CDTi on STH in Ethiopia are scanty. Two community-based cross-sectional surveys (baseline in 1997 and post-CDTi in 2017) were conducted to evaluate the impact of long-term CDTi employed to con
