Entomological evaluation by pool screen polymerase chain reaction of Onchocerca volvulus transmission in Ecuador following mass Mectizan distribution.

The prevalence of infected and infective black flies was estimated by pool screen polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification in the three river basins in Ecuador endemic for onchocerciasis. Mass distribution of ivermectin (Mectizan) resulted in dramatic declines in the prevalence of infected and infective flies. In the Rio Santiago river basin, no infections were detected, suggesting that transmission had ceased. The ratio of infected to infective flies in Simulium exiguum was 10-fold lower than the corresponding ratio for Simulium quadrivittatum, suggesting that S. exiguum is a more-compet

Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane in soil, river sediment, and fish in the Amazon in Brazil.

Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), its main metabolites, and other organochlorines were analyzed in soils (n=6), fluvial sediments (n=14), and fish (n=10) that were collected in several areas of the Amazon region in Brazil. The samples were analyzed by capillary column gas chromatography coupled to electron capture detection. DDT residues were present in most of the collected sediments in concentrations of approximately 10 to 100 micro/kg (ppb, dry weight). Some urban top soils were found to have more than 1 mg/kg (ppm). In fish, as much as 0.5 mg/kg of total DDT (wet weight) was found in

An analysis of trypanocidal drug use in the Eastern Province of Zambia.

As part of the development of a strategy for the control of bovine trypanosomosis in Zambia, a survey was conducted to quantify and qualify the current use of trypanocidal drugs (diminazene aceturate and isometamidium chloride) in a tsetse-controlled and a tsetse-infested area of the Eastern Province. A total of 207 trypanocide users were interviewed. Questions were posed on herd structure, trypanocidal drug preference, treatment strategy, reason for treatment, method of treatment and treatment frequency. The majority of the cattle owners preferred to use diminazene aceturate rather than isome

Insecticide resistance status, esterase activity, and electromorphs from mosquito populations of Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae), in Houston (Harris County), Texas.

Culex quinquefasciatus Say is a vector of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) in Texas. This disease is endemic and prevalent in the Houston area. Disease prevention through mosquito control is mainly targeted against adults by application of a resmethrin-piperonyl butoxide formulation (Scourge). Immature mosquitoes were collected from eight areas in Harris County during 1998. The susceptibility status of these populations to Scourge, malathion, and resmethrin, the latter alone or with an esterase inhibitor as a synergist, was determined using a bottle assay with females. The population structure was

Improved reference genome of Aedes aegypti informs arbovirus vector control.

Female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infect more than 400 million people each year with dangerous viral pathogens including dengue, yellow fever, Zika and chikungunya. Progress in understanding the biology of mosquitoes and developing the tools to fight them has been slowed by the lack of a high-quality genome assembly. Here we combine diverse technologies to produce the markedly improved, fully re-annotated AaegL5 genome assembly, and demonstrate how it accelerates mosquito science. We anchored physical and cytogenetic maps, doubled the number of known chemosensory ionotropic receptors that guide

Epidemic of cutaneous leishmaniasis: 109 cases in a population of 500.

In February 2004, 4 patients aged 10-15 years presented at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences with non-healing multiple ulcers on exposed parts. On the basis of history, clinical assessment and fine needle aspiration cytology, they were diagnosed as having cutaneous leishmaniasis. We were informed that several similar cases were present in their village. A team of doctors and technicians visited the area. A survey was conducted and another 105 cases with various morphological presentations were identified. The area was visited several times to find the vector, reservoirs and source of

Interacting climatic, environmental, biologic and socio-economic drivers of the global dengue expansion.

Dengue is the most rapidly expanding mosquito-borne viral disease worldwide. The worst year on record was 2024, with over 100 countries reporting 14.4 million cases and over 11,000 deaths. Since then, and up to August 2026, another 7.4 million cases and over 5000 deaths have been reported. The region of the Americas was impacted the most, followed by South-East Asia and the Western Pacific. Both the spread of dengue viruses (DENV) and their primary vectors, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, are driven by several factors. Globalization has accelerated vector dispersal, particularly through in

Temperature tolerance and persistence of promising native Metarhizium isolates for use in chili pepper farms in Ghana.

Ghanaian chili pepper exports are subject to stringent regulations on pesticide residues in significant foreign markets. Therefore, safer pest management options are needed to supplement current non-chemical control techniques, especially for controlling Thaumatotibia leucotreta Meyrick (False codling moth, FCM), an important phytosanitary pest. A national survey was initiated in 2023 to identify native entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) from Ghanaian farms. Seven Metarhizium isolates were recovered from soils and induced substantial mortalities of soil-residing final-instar stages of FCM in vitro.

Low n-3/High n-6 Flaxseed and Hermetia illucens Larvae Oils as Feed Materials: Effects on In Vitro Rumen Fermentation, Maternal Metabolism, Antioxidant Status and Colostrum in Prolific Ewes.

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL; Hermetia illucens) oil and flaxseed oil provide contrasting fatty acid profiles and may serve as alternative lipid feed materials in ruminant nutrition. This study assessed low-α-linolenic/high-linoleic flaxseed oil, BSFL oil, and their blends using an in vitro rumen fermentation screening with pooled bovine rumen inoculum and a randomized prepartum feeding trial in 32 twin- or triplet-bearing Olkuska ewes. In vitro, the single oils and a 1:1 blend were evaluated at two inclusion levels; total VFA concentration was unchanged, whereas propionate proportion, the a

Cyclic GMP-dependent activation of Ca2+ release from the ER and digestive vacuole at distinct phases of intraerythrocytic Plasmodium falciparum development.

The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum relies on coordinated signaling cascades to control progression through its complex life cycle in the mammalian host and insect vector. Mobilization of cytosolic Ca2+ ([Ca2+]c) is central to many of these processes and is linked to the second messengers cGMP, cyclic AMP and inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate. During the symptomatic blood stage these signaling pathways play key roles in erythrocyte invasion, maturation and egress of the parasite. Intraerythrocytic P. falciparum expressing the genetically encoded Ca2+ indicator GCaMP3 were used to investigate

Side effects of semi-synthetic insecticide spinetoram on the whitefly parasitoid Encarsia formosa.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide risk assessment for biological control agents is essential for implementing integrated pest management (IPM) programs. Spinetoram is a naturally derived insecticide used to control a variety of agricultural sap-sucking insect pests, and Encarsia formosa Gahan (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) plays a key role in the biocontrol of greenhouse whiteflies. Despite its presumed safe ecotoxicological profile, the side effects of spinetoram on E. formosa are partially unknown, especially at sublethal doses. In the laboratory, we estimated the lethal concentrations (LC) of spinetoram

Developing methods for chilling, compacting, and sterilizing adult Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) and comparing mating competitiveness between males sterilized as adults versus pupae for sterile male release.

The yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti L., can transmit several pathogens responsible for human diseases. With insecticide resistance development becoming a concern, alternative control strategies are needed for Ae. aegypti. Sterile insect technique (SIT) is an increasingly popular option being explored. However, logistical issues in mass production and sterilization make it difficult to maintain a SIT program. Male mosquitoes are typically irradiated as pupae because this is the earliest developmental point at which females can be separated from males, but asynchrony in pupation and high va

Endotherapic treatment to control Toumeyella parvicornis Cockerell infestations on Pinus pinea L.

BACKGROUND: The pine tortoise scale, Toumeyella parvicornis (Cockerell, 1897), is a damaging insect pest native to North America. Its accidental introduction into Europe, where it was first reported in central-southern Italy, is leading to severe infestations among stone pine trees, Pinus pinea L. causing severe infestations and generating a major risk to the health and safety of the citizens as well. This preliminary study aimed at finding an effective low-impact control strategy against Toumeyella parvicornis. We evaluated the effect of endotherapic abamectin injected into infested stone pin

Identification of Differentially Expressed Genes In Deltamethrin-Resistant Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus.

Culex quinquefasciatus is one of China's major house-dwelling mosquito species and an important vector of filariasis and encephalitis. Chemical treatments represent one of the most successful approaches for comprehensive mosquito prevention and control. However, the widespread use of chemical pesticides has led to the occurrence and development of insecticide resistance. Therefore, in-depth studies of resistance to insecticides are of vital importance. In this study, we performed a gene expression analysis to investigate genes from Cx. quinquefasciatus that may confer pyrethroid resistance. We

Colorimetric tests for diagnosis of filarial infection and vector surveillance using non-instrumented nucleic acid loop-mediated isothermal amplification (NINA-LAMP).

Accurate detection of filarial parasites in humans is essential for the implementation and evaluation of mass drug administration programs to control onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis. Determining the infection levels in vector populations is also important for assessing transmission, deciding when drug treatments may be terminated and for monitoring recrudescence. Immunological methods to detect infection in humans are available, however, cross-reactivity issues have been reported. Nucleic acid-based molecular assays offer high levels of specificity and sensitivity, and can be used to d

Influence of partial or total replacement of glycerol by alternative cryoprotectants in Ghent freezing extender on post-thaw sperm quality in stallions.

Although glycerol is the cryoprotectant most commonly used in stallions, it has also a considerable toxicity for equine sperm. It was the aim of this study to analyse the quality of frozen-thawed stallion semen after complete or partial replacement of glycerol in the freezing extender by alternative cryoprotectants. We hypothesized that partial or total replacement of glycerol by cryoprotectants occurring in cold-resistant frog, insect or plant species results in similar or better semen quality after freezing-thawing. As basic medium, the commercial Ghent basic extender was used and either sup

Artemisia spp. essential oils against the disease-carrying blowfly Calliphora vomitoria.

BACKGROUND: Synanthropic flies play a considerable role in the transmission of pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms. In this work, the essential oil (EO) of two aromatic plants, Artemisia annua and Artemisia dracunculus, were evaluated for their abilities to control the blowfly Calliphora vomitoria. Artemisia annua and A. dracunculus EOs were extracted, analysed and tested in laboratory bioassays. Besides, the physiology of EOs toxicity and the EOs antibacterial and antifungal properties were evaluated. RESULTS: Both Artemisia EOs deterred C. vomitoria oviposition on fresh beef meat.
