Rofecoxib is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is reported to act by selectively inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2. A review and analysis of reports sent to the Spontaneous Reporting System of the Food and Drug Administration, Rockville, Md, suggest that aseptic meningitis is associated with rofecoxib use. To our knowledge, there have been no published reports of aseptic meningitis occurring in association with rofecoxib use to date. We report 5 serious cases of aseptic meningitis associated with rofecoxib use.

The aim of this study was the production of the homopolyester poly(4-hydroxybutyric acid) (poly(4HB)) with recombinant strains of Escherichia coli. Wild-type strains and other widely used non-recombinant strains of E. coli are not able to produce polyhydroxyalkanoic acids (PHA) as storage compounds and cannot utilize 4-hydroxybutyric acid as sole carbon source. Accordingly, hybrid plasmids of pBluescript vectors were constructed which harbored the Alcaligenes eutrophus PHA synthase gene (phaC) and the Clostridium kluyveri orfZ putatively encoding a 4-hydroxybutyric acid-coenzyme A transferase.

Copiamycin, an antibiotic agent, has shown in vitro activity against Candida albicans, Torulopsis glabrata, and Trichomonas vaginalis. Local administration of copiamycin to mice inoculated intraperitoneally with protozoa reduced the per cent of infection as measured by decreased abscess formation. This antibiotic has had little effect on the glucose oxidation by protozoa. Its action on anaerobic glucose metabolism in these organisms was equal to that of aminitrozole and azalomycin F. Studies were made comparing the toxicity of beta-propiolactone (BPL) for mammalian (mouse) cells in vitro and for mice and for Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) virus which is highly cytopathogenic for each. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancer with high morbidity and mortality in women. This study aimed to explore the potential mechanism of costunolide inducing MCF-7 cells apoptosis by multi-spectroscopy, molecular docking, and cell experiments.
