The impact of shoulder pathologies on job discontinuation and return to work: a pilot ultrasonographic investigation.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound imaging has emerged as one of the most useful tools for evaluating shoulder disorders. To date, the association between shoulder ultrasonography and a patient's work status has rarely been explored by antecedent studies. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the association between sonographically diagnosed shoulder pathologies and job discontinuation and return to work. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SETTING: Outpatient clinic in the university hospital. POPULATION: Fifty-nine patients who were older than 20 years of age and had worked in a full-time job within the

Management of mal de debarquement syndrome as vestibular migraines.

OBJECTIVE: Mal de debarquement syndrome (MdDS) is a balance disorder that typically starts after an extended exposure to passive motion, such as a boat or plane ride. Management is typically supportive (e.g. physical therapy), and symptoms that persist beyond 6 months have been described as unlikely to remit. This study was conducted to evaluate the response of patients with MdDS to management with migraine prophylaxis, including lifestyle changes and medical therapy. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective review. SETTING: Ambulatory setting at a tertiary care medical center. METHODS: Clinical history,

Characteristic changes in the physiological components of cybersickness.

We investigated the characteristic changes in the physiology of cybersickness when subjects were exposed to virtual reality. Sixty-one participants experienced a virtual navigation for a total of 9.5 min, and were required to detect specific virtual objects. Three questionnaires for sickness susceptibility and immersive tendency were obtained before the navigation. Sixteen electrophysiological signals were recorded before, during, and after the navigation. The severity of cybersickness experienced by participants was reported from a simulator sickness questionnaire after the navigation. The to

The association between subtalar joint motion and outcome satisfaction in patients with displaced intraarticular calcaneal fractures.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of literature on the effect of calcaneal fractures on subtalar joint motion and patient satisfaction. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between subtalar joint motion and outcome satisfaction in patients who had displaced intraarticular calcaneal fractures. The design of this study was a retrospective analysis from a randomized, controlled clinical trial. The setting was a Level I trauma center. METHODS: Of the 332 displaced intraarticular calcaneal fractures entered into the clinical trial and managed by the senior author, 244 fractur

Effects of weightlessness in man.

The program for the Apollo 16 flight was designed to include both safeguards against and investigations of the physiological problems arising from increase in the period of manned space flight. Precautions included the provision of a controlled diet with high potassium content, carefully controlled work loads and work-rest cycles and an emergency cardiology consultation service, and investigations were made to enable pre-flight-post-flight comparisons of metabolic, cardiovascular and central nervous system data. Results of these investigations indicate that adjustment to weightlessness can be

Test-retest reliability of the Vestibular Ocular Motor Screening (VOMS) tool and modified Balance Error Scoring System (mBESS) in US military personnel.

UNLABELLED: The Military Acute Concussion Evaluation 2 (MACE 2), which includes the Vestibular-Ocular Motor Screening (VOMS) tool and the single-leg stance component of the modified Balance Error Scoring System (mBESS), was introduced in 2018 as an assessment of acute mTBI in US military personnel. However, the reliability of the VOMS and mBESS in this population has not been established. OBJECTIVES: The primary purpose of this study was to examine the reliability of the VOMS across a 6-month period in healthy, uninjured US Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) personnel. DESIGN: Active d

A Smartphone-based gaming system for vestibular rehabilitation: A usability study.

BACKGROUNDVestibular dysfunctions result in a wide range of impairments and can have debilitating consequences on a person's day-to-day activities. Conventional vestibular rehabilitation is effective but suffers from poor therapy compliance due to boredom. Virtual reality technology can make training more engaging and allow precise quantification of the training process. However, most existing technologies for vestibular rehabilitation are expensive and not suitable for use in patients' homes and most clinics. In this pilot study, we developed and evaluated the usability of a smartphone-based

Outcomes after scarf osteotomy for treatment of adult hallux valgus deformity.

BACKGROUND: Many procedures have been developed to correct hallux valgus deformity using distal soft tissue realignment, metatarsal osteotomy, and periodically, a proximal phalanx osteotomy (Akin). The ideal metatarsal osteotomy allows for varying degrees of correction with reliable improvement in deformity and patient satisfaction. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We evaluated the results after scarf osteotomy with respect to American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) scores, patient satisfaction, radiographic results, and complications. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We evaluated 29 patients (34 feet)

Clinical and psychological correlates of lumbar motion abnormalities in low back disorders.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Low back pain (LBP) and low back disorders (LBDs) identify a complex constellation of conditions that frustrate both diagnosis and therapy. Dynamic quantitative assessment and questionnaire instruments directed toward psychosocial and situational variables provide potentially powerful tools for determining functional pathology and potentially outcome. PURPOSE: Our goal was to independently assess clinical correlates of a trunk motion measurement device, the lumbar motion monitor (LMM). The reliability of the LMM as a clinical test was assessed by comparison with an indepen

TREM2 contributes to central sensitization through PI3K/Akt/mTOR-mediated autophagic dysfunction in a rat model of vestibular migraine.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular migraine (VM) is a disabling neurological disorder where neuroinflammation and central sensitization constitute the c … itivity by the tail-flick test, and vestibular function was assessed with the beam balance test and motion sickness index (MSI). Western blot and immunofluorescence assays were then performed to quantify the expression of TREM2, as well as autophagy-related, neuroinflammation-related, and central sensitization-related proteins in the trigeminocervical complex (TC …

Immersive learning in quality improvement: evaluating a virtual reality escape room for medical learners and faculty.

BACKGROUND: Didactic approaches to quality improvement (QI) are often perceived as insufficiently engaging, which may limit learner motivati … gths of the experience (teamwork, engagement, collaborative problem solving), usability challenges (motion sickness, session length), and design preferences (variation in puzzle clarity and perceived linkage to QI concepts). Think-aloud findings similarly highlighted immersion, discussion, and collaboration as positive features, while hardware constraints and phy …

Subclinical nematode parasitism affects activity and rumination patterns in first-season grazing cattle.

Sickness behaviour has been suggested as an applicable indicator for monitoring disease. Deviating feeding behaviour and activity can provide information about animals' health and welfare status. Recent advances in sensor technology enable monitoring of such behaviours and could potentially be utilized as an indicator of gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections. This study investigated activity and rumination patterns in first-season grazing steers exposed to subclinical infection levels of the GIN Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora. At turnout, animals were allocated to one of four
