Leveraging large language models for patient-ventilator asynchrony detection.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to evaluate whether large language models (LLMs) can achieve performance comparable to expert-developed deep neural networks in detecting flow starvation (FS) asynchronies during mechanical ventilation. METHODS: Popular LLMs (GPT-4, Claude-3.5, Gemini-1.5, DeepSeek-R1) were tested on a dataset of 6500 airway pressure cycles from 28 patients, classifying breaths into three FS categories. They were also tasked with generating executable code for one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN-1D) and Long Short-Term Memory networks. Model performance

An ensemble-based 3D residual network for the classification of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common type of dementia, with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) being a key precursor. Early MCI diagnosis is crucial for slowing AD progression, but distinguishing MCI from normal controls (NC) is challenging due to subtle imaging differences. Furthermore, differentiating early MCI (EMCI) from late MCI (LMCI) is also important for interventions. This study proposes a deep learning-based approach using a weighted probability-based ensemble method to integrate results from three-dimensional residual networks (3D ResNet). (1) This study employs 3D ResNet-18, 3D ResNet

Assessing the determinants of municipal solid waste generation in Europe: A machine learning approach.

Waste management is significant for achieving climate goals, considering its contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. While differences in waste management systems and generation rates across European countries are closely linked to socio-economic, demographic, and environmental factors, previous studies have predominantly focused on specific regions or local municipalities. This study addresses this gap by analyzing Europe as a single entity, providing an overview of the current waste management practices and legislation, assessing influencing factors and employing machine learning (M

Video-Based Multiphysiological Disentanglement and Remote Robust Estimation for Respiration.

Remote noncontact respiratory rate estimation by facial visual information has great research significance, providing valuable priors for health monitoring, clinical diagnosis, and anti-fraud. However, existing studies suffer from disturbances in epidermal specular reflections induced by head movements and facial expressions. Furthermore, diffuse reflections of light in the skin-colored subcutaneous tissue caused by multiple time-varying physiological signals independent of breathing are entangled with the intention of the respiratory process, leading to confusion in current research. The ANFIS-RSM based multi-objective optimization and modelling of ultrasound-assisted extraction of polyphenols from jamun fruit (Syzygium cumini).

Given their potential as natural substitutes for artificial additives and their health advantages, the extraction of bioactive substances like polyphenols from plant sources is becoming more and more significant. Nevertheless, it is still difficult to achieve effective extraction with minimal time and energy. In order to optimize polyphenol extraction from ripe jamun fruit pulp, including traditional and ultrasound-assisted methods, this study assessed the prediction power of response surface methodology (RSM) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS). It examined how temperature, pro

Knowledge Uncertainty Estimation for Reliable Clinical Decision Support: A Delirium Risk Prognosis Case Study.

INTRODUCTION: Predictive models hold significant potential in healthcare, but their adoption in clinical settings is hampered by limited trust due to their inability to recognize when presented with unfamiliar data. Estimating knowledge uncertainty (KU) can mitigate this issue. This study aims to assess the capabilities of two targeted approaches, specifically Ensemble Neural Networks (ENN) and Spectral Normalized Neural Gaussian Processes (SNGP), in quantifying KU and detecting out-of-distribution (OoD) data within the context of delirium risk prediction. METHODOLOGY: Using a cohort of hospi

MS-UNet: A Hybrid Network with a Multi-Scale Vision Transformer and Attention Learning Confusion Regions for Soybean Rust Fungus.

Soybean rust, caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi, is recognized as the most devastating disease affecting soybean crops worldwide. In practical applications, performing accurate Phakopsora pachyrhizi segmentation (PPS) is essential for elucidating the morphodynamics of soybean rust, thereby facilitating effective prevention strategies and advancing research on related soybean diseases. Despite its importance, studies focusing on PPS-related datasets and the automatic segmentation of Phakopsora pachyrhizi remain limited. To address this gap, we propose an efficient semantic segmentation

Benign vs malignant tumors classification from tumor outlines in mammography scans using artificial intelligence techniques.

Breast cancer is one of the most important causes of death among women due to cancer. With the early diagnosis of this condition, the probability of survival will increase. For this purpose, medical imaging methods, especially mammography, are used for screening and early diagnosis of breast abnormalities. The main goal of this study is to distinguish benign or malignant tumors based on tumor morphology features extracted from tumor outlines extracted from mammography images. Unlike previous studies, this study does not use the mammographic image itself but only extracts the exact outline of t

Discriminating single-molecule binding events from diffraction-limited fluorescence.

Single-molecule localization microscopy enables high-resolution imaging of molecular interactions, but discriminating molecular binding types has traditionally relied on complex strategies, such as multiple dyes, time-division techniques, or kinetic analysis, that are asynchronous, invasive, or time-consuming. Here, we uncover previously overlooked spatiotemporal information embedded within diffraction-limited fluorescence, enabling synchronous classification of individual binding event videos using only a single fluorescent dye. Building on this insight, we propose a Temporal-to-Context Convo

A deep learning model with interpretable squeeze-and-excitation for automated rehabilitation exercise assessment.

Rehabilitation exercises are critical for recovering from motor dysfunction caused by neurological conditions like stroke, back pain, Parkinson's disease, and spinal cord injuries. Traditionally, these exercises require constant monitoring by therapists, which is time-consuming and costly, often leading to therapist shortages. This paper introduces a deep learning model, convolutional neural network - squeeze excitation (CNN-SE), to automate rehabilitation exercise assessment. By optimizing its parameters with the grey wolf optimization algorithm, the model was fine-tuned for optimal performan

Automated detection and classification of osteolytic lesions in panoramic radiographs using CNNs and vision transformers.

BACKGROUND: Diseases underlying osteolytic lesions in jaws are characterized by the absorption of bone tissue and are often asymptomatic, delaying their diagnosis. Well-defined lesions (benign cyst-like lesions) and ill-defined lesions (osteomyelitis or malignancy) can be detected early in a panoramic radiograph (PR) by an experienced examiner, but most dentists lack appropriate training. To support dentists, this study aimed to develop and evaluate deep learning models for the detection of osteolytic lesions in PRs. METHODS: A dataset of 676 PRs (165 well-defined, 181 ill-defined, 330 contro

DMCA-Net: Dual-branch multi-granularity hierarchical contrast and cross-attention network for cervical abnormal cell detection.

Accurate detection of abnormal cells is essential for early screening and precise diagnosis of cervical cancer. Despite the recent advances in deep learning-based methods for cervical cancer detection, their broad clinical applications are hindered by several technical challenges. On the one hand, gradually evolved abnormal cells are visually similar to normal cells. On the other hand, single cells and cell clusters exhibit significant appearance variations, overlooking those between normal and abnormal cells. In order to overcome these challenges, we propose a novel dual-branch multi-granular
