Visual mapping of muscle MRI fatty replacement patterns in genetic myopathies using dimensionality reduction.

Muscle MRI is a complementary diagnostic tool in genetic myopathies; however, its interpretation remains challenging because numerous muscles must be assessed simultaneously, and disease-specific patterns overlap. This study evaluated whether dimensionality reduction techniques (DRT) can transform complex muscle MRI fatty replacement data into meaningful low-dimensional visual maps of patient similarity. We analyzed a large multicenter dataset comprising 975 patients with genetically confirmed diagnoses across ten myopathies. Mercuri scores of pelvic and lower-limb muscles were used as input.

Tactile morphagnosia secondary to spatial deficits.

A 73-year old man showed visual and tactile agnosia following bilateral haemorrhagic stroke. Tactile agnosia was present in both hands, as shown by his impaired recognition of objects, geometrical shapes, letters and nonsense shapes. Basic somatosensory functions and the appreciation of substance qualities (hylognosis) were preserved. The patient's inability to identify the stimulus shape (morphagnosia) was associated with a striking impairment in detecting the orientation of a line or a rod in two- and three-dimensional space. This spatial deficit was thought to underlie morphagnosia, since i

MRI in the Evaluation of Acute Visual Syndromes.

Acute visual symptom emergencies occur commonly and present a challenge to both clinical and radiologic facets. Although most patients with visual complaints routinely require clinical evaluation with direct ophthalmologic evaluation, imaging is rarely necessary. However, there are highly morbid conditions where the prompt recognition and management of an acute visual syndrome (AVS) requires an astute physician to probe further. Suspicious symptomatology including abrupt visual loss, diplopia, ophthalmoplegia, and proptosis/exophthalmos require further investigation with advanced imaging modal

The neural basis of body form and body action agnosia.

Visual analysis of faces and nonfacial body stimuli brings about neural activity in different cortical areas. Moreover, processing body form and body action relies on distinct neural substrates. Although brain lesion studies show specific face processing deficits, neuropsychological evidence for defective recognition of nonfacial body parts is lacking. By combining psychophysics studies with lesion-mapping techniques, we found that lesions of ventromedial, occipitotemporal areas induce face and body recognition deficits while lesions involving extrastriate body area seem causatively associated

Towards Cognitive Impairment Screening in Elderly Communities with Audio-Visual Modal Disentangled Representation Learning.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is pressing global health concerns, for which early diagnosis is critical to effective intervention. However, conventional approaches, including neuropsychological assessments and neuroimaging techniques, are resource-intensive and impractical for community-level screening. In contrast, artificial intelligence-driven behavioral analyses, including speech pattern and facial expression recognition, have demonstrated considerable potential for scalable and non invasive cognitive assessment. This work presents a community-oriented intelligent screening system for cognitive

Declarative Memory Impairment and Emotional Bias in Recurrent Depression with a Seasonal Pattern: The Interplay between Emotion and Cognition in Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a subtype of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) with a seasonal pattern. Although it is a pathological condition limited to specific seasons of the year, during the symptomatic period, patients may experience a significant impairment of well-being and daily quality of life as a result of the depressed mood, associated with other symptoms defined as atypical of MDD. While extensive evidence of memory deficits has been found in MDD, explicit memory impairments in SAD are insufficiently studied. This study aims to investigate the cognitive processing of emotional

Neurotoxic impact of mercury on the central nervous system evaluated by neuropsychological tests and on the autonomic nervous system evaluated by dynamic pupillometry.

Mercury vapor is highly toxic to the human body. The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence of neuropsychological dysfunction in former workers of fluorescent lamps factories that were exposed to mercury vapor (years after cessation of exposure), diagnosed with chronic mercurialism, and to investigate the effects of such exposure on the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) using the non-invasive method of dynamic pupillometry. The exposed group and a control group matched by age and educational level were evaluated by the Beck Depression Inventory and with the computerized neuropsychologi

Age-related differences in agenda-driven monitoring of format and task information.

Age-related source memory deficits may arise, in part, from changes in the agenda-driven processes that control what features of events are relevant during remembering. Using fMRI, we compared young and older adults on tests assessing source memory for format (picture, word) or encoding task (self-, other-referential), as well as on old-new recognition. Behaviorally, relative to old-new recognition, older adults showed disproportionate and equivalent deficits on both source tests compared to young adults. At encoding, both age groups showed expected activation associated with format in posteri

Differences in neuropsychological performance between subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological studies have suggested that frontal-striatal dysfunction plays a role in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), although findings have been inconsistent, possibly due to heterogeneity within the disorder and methodological issues. The purpose of the present study was therefore to compare the neuropsychological performance of different subtypes of OCD and matched non-clinical controls (NCs) on the Cambridge Automated Neuropsychological Test Battery (CANTAB). METHODS: Fifty-nine OCD patients and 59 non-clinical controls completed selected tests from CANTAB examining

Oculodentodigital Dysplasia: A Hypomyelinating Leukodystrophy with a Characteristic MRI Pattern of Brain Stem Involvement.

Oculodentodigital dysplasia, a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the gene encoding gap junction protein 1, classically presents with typical facial features, dental and ocular anomalies, and syndactyly. Oligosymptomatic patients are common and difficult to recognize, in particular if syndactyly is absent. Neurologic manifestation occurs in approximately 30% of patients, and leukodystrophy or T2 hypointensity of gray matter structures or both have been noted in individual patients. To investigate MR imaging changes in oculodentodigital dysplasia, we retrospectively and systematically

A Low-Cost, Open-Source, Compliant Hand for Enabling Sensorimotor Control for People with Transradial Amputations.

In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a low-cost, open-source prosthetic hand that enables both motor control and sensory feedback for people with transradial amputations. We integrate electromyographic pattern recognition for motor control along with contact reflexes and sensory substitution to provide feedback to the user. Compliant joints allow for robustness to impacts. The entire hand can be built for around $550. This low cost makes research and development of sensorimotor prosthetic hands more accessible to researchers worldwide, while also being affordable for peo

The diagnostic value of intraocular fluid analysis by polymerase chain reaction in Thai patients with uveitis.

Uveitis is a major cause of severe visual impairment throughout the world and can be initiated by various infectious and non-infectious causes. Early recognition of specific infections is important as the treatment with antimicrobial agents might stop the progression or even cure the eye disease. To determine the infectious causes of uveitis in Thailand, intraocular fluid samples of 100 HIV-negative patients and 47 HIV-positive patients with uveitis were examined using real-time PCR analysis for herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus, cytomegalovirus and Toxoplasma gondii. Positive PCR r

Altered free amino acid levels in brain cortex tissues of mice with Alzheimer's disease as their N(O,S)-ethoxycarbonyl/tert-butyldimethylsilyl derivatives.

The altered amino acid (AA) levels as neurotransmitter closely correlate to neurodegenerative conditions including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Target profiling analysis of nineteen AAs in brain cortex samples from three Tg2576 mice as AD model and three littermate mice as control model was achieved as their N(O,S)-ethoxycarbonyl/tert-butyldimethylsilyl derivatives by gas chromatography. Subsequently, star pattern recognition analysis was performed on the brain AA levels of AD mice after normalization to the corresponding control median values. As compared to control mice, gamma-aminobutyric acid

FMRI of shared-stream priming of lexical identification by object semantics along the ventral visual processing stream.

Distributed sub-systems of the brain's semantic network have been shown to process semantics associated with visual features of objects (e.g., shape, colour) in the ventral visual processing stream, whereas semantics associated with actions are processed in the dorsal stream. Orthographic lexical processing has also been shown to occur in the ventral stream. Past research from our lab (Neudorf et al., 2019) has demonstrated a temporal (i.e., reaction time) priming advantage for object primes over action primes in the lexical decision task consistent with ventral shared-stream processing of vis

Cognitive training and neuroplasticity in mild cognitive impairment (COG-IT): protocol for a two-site, blinded, randomised, controlled treatment trial.

INTRODUCTION: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is common in older adults and represents a high-risk group for progression to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Medication trials in MCI have generally failed, but new discoveries with brain plasticity in ageing have led to the study of cognitive training as a potential treatment to improve cognitive abilities. Computerised cognitive training (CCT) involves computerised cognitive exercises that target specific cognitive abilities and neural networks to potentially improve cognitive functioning through neuroplasticity. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: In a two-site s

Prediction Error Representation in Individuals With Generalized Anxiety Disorder During Passive Avoidance.

OBJECTIVE: Deficits in reinforcement-based decision making have been reported in generalized anxiety disorder. However, the pathophysiology of these deficits is largely unknown; published studies have mainly examined adolescents, and the integrity of core functional processes underpinning decision making remains undetermined. In particular, it is unclear whether the representation of reinforcement prediction error (PE) (the difference between received and expected reinforcement) is disrupted in generalized anxiety disorder. This study addresses these issues in adults with the disorder. METHOD

Neurokinin-1 receptor inhibition reverses ischaemic brain injury and dementia in bilateral common carotid artery occluded rats: possible mechanisms.

BACKGROUNDS: Increase in SP release as a function of hypoxia of the rat carotid body is a tissue response to ischemia that leads to neurogenic inflammation and cognitive deficits. Substance P-mediated inflammation is reported to attenuate the neuroprotective PPAR-γ. This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of aprepitant, a substance P-NK1 receptor antagonist in bilateral carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO)-induced ischaemic brain injury and vascular dementia. METHODS: Bilateral carotid artery occlusion was performed in Wistar rats to produce hypoperfusion and ischaemic injury. Dementi

An SSVEP-Based Brain-Computer Interface for Text Spelling With Adaptive Queries That Maximize Information Gain Rates.

This paper presents a brain-computer interface for text entry using steady-state visually evoked potentials (SSVEP). Like other SSVEP-based spellers, ours identifies the desired input character by posing questions (or queries) to users through a visual interface. Each query defines a mapping from possible characters to steady-state stimuli. The user responds by attending to one of these stimuli. Unlike other SSVEP-based spellers, ours chooses from a much larger pool of possible queries-on the order of ten thousand instead of ten. The larger query pool allows our speller to adapt more effective

Response to learned threat: An FMRI study in adolescent and adult anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: Poor threat-safety discrimination reflects prefrontal cortex dysfunction in adult anxiety disorders. While adolescent anxiety disorders are impairing and predict high risk for adult anxiety disorders, the neural correlates of threat-safety discrimination have not been investigated in this population. The authors compared prefrontal cortex function in anxious and healthy adolescents and adults following conditioning and extinction, processes requiring threat-safety learning. METHOD: Anxious and healthy adolescents and adults (N=114) completed fear conditioning and extinction in the

Acetylcholine facilitates recovery of episodic memory after brain damage.

Episodic memory depends on a network of interconnected brain structures including the inferior temporal cortex, hippocampus, fornix, and mammillary bodies. We have previously shown that a moderate episodic memory impairment in monkeys with transection of the fornix is exacerbated by prior depletion of acetylcholine from inferotemporal cortex, despite the fact that depletion of acetylcholine from inferotemporal cortex on its own has no effect on episodic memory. Here we show that this effect occurs because inferotemporal acetylcholine facilitates recovery of function following structural damage
