BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgery has recently become a common procedure for urological fields. We investigated the incidence of respiratory complications and their background during retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgical procedures performed in the kidney position.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 51 patients undergoing urological retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgery, and assessed perioperative respiratory complications using postoperative chest x-ray (CXR) and physical examinations.

Duodenal perforation after a blunt abdominal trauma is a rare emergency situation that can result in life-threatening complications. We report on a woman who had a perforation of the duodenum after a supposed mild blunt abdominal trauma. Unremarkable at the initial presentation, the patient presented with acute abdominal pain and a retroperitoneal abscess five days after the initial trauma. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: The liver hanging maneuver described by Belghiti et al is an innovative suspending technique of the liver and is useful in difficult major right hepatectomies or in donor operations for living donor liver transplantation. We report a case of a patient with a secondary injury of external iliac artery and vein in the L4-L5 laminectomy and discectomy course. An immediately vein suture and ilio-iliac by-pass with Dacron was made. In the postoperative a iatrogenic lumbar ureter section was discovered and treated with renal autotransplantation. We review the options described in the literature in the management of these complex ureteral injuries.

HISTORY AND FINDINGS: A 33-year-old man was admitted 7 years after a testicular teratomatous carcinoma had first been diagnosed, treated by a right orchiectomy and two-stage radical retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy. Five years later the first mediastinal metastases were treated with high-dosage chemotherapy and autologous germ-cell transplantation, and remaining paraaortic--mediastinal tumour tissue was resected. Two years later another tumour at that site was only partially resected. A curing treatment seemed impossible, because the aortic wall had been invaded.

STUDY AIM: The aim of this retrospective study was to report on 12 cases of peritoneal hydatidosis observed in the same hospital from 1989 to 1998.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Four men and 8 women (mean age: 37 years) were included in the study. Four of them had been operated on for liver hydatidosis, 3 to 9 years before. The peritoneal hydatidosis was asymptomatic (n = 2), revealed by pain and/or fever (n = 9) and by hydatid peritonitis (n = 1). Diagnosis was performed by ultrasonography in seven cases out of 10. Preoperative treatment with albendazole was given to one patient only during 1 month.

This paper describes six cases of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) in which an abdominal tumour had been suspected clinically. Pathological changes were mainly restricted to the massive enlargement of a mesenteric lymph node due to necrogranulomatous lymphadenitis. The diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) can be problematic. A case of Hodgkin's disease, lymphocyte depleted subtype, sample by FNA biopsy is presented. We describe the cytomorphologic features present in this unusual subtype of Hodgkin's disease and discuss the differential diagnosis. Immunohistochemical and morphologic findings of a subsequent biopsy specimen supported the diagnosis. Although FNA is an increasingly used diagnostic modality to evaluate tumors including malignant lymphomas, Hodgkin's disease remains, as in this case, a difficult diagnosis by FNA.

PURPOSE: Neuropathy is a rare, but potentially morbid, complication of cardiac catheterization. In this study, we report the incidence of this complication and describe its clinical presentation, cause, and natural history.
METHODS: Between 1988 and 1993, 9585 cardiac catheterizations were performed at this institution. Patients in whom femoral neuropathy developed were identified through a cardiology registry. Hospital and outpatient records and personal interviews were used to determine the presentation and clinical course of each of these patients.

In severe necrotizing pancreatitis, the retroperitoneum is the main site both of autodigestion and of the production of toxins. With the aim of removing necrotic tissues and active enzymes from the retroperitoneum, we developed a surgical approach based on a wide exposure of the pancreas and on the insertion of multiple drainages with postoperative irrigations with hypertonic solutions and antiproteases. During the last two years 73 patients with a total number of 84 abdominal abscesses have been investigated by ultrasound. Two thirds of the patients (67%) had postoperative abscesses. Group F streptococci are part of the oropharyngeal, bowel, and perineal flora. Abscess formation by these organisms most commonly involves the cutaneous system: the next most common sites, in descending order, are the cervicofacial, dental, and intraabdominal areas.
