Soil-transmitted helminth infections remain a major public health burden in low- and middle-income countries. The traditional diagnosis by microscopic examination of fecal samples is insensitive and time-consuming. In this study, a pentaplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was evaluated for the simultaneous detection of Ancylostoma, Necator americanus, Ascaris lumbricoides, and Strongyloides stercoralis. Prevalence of internal parasites was determined by fecal examination for eggs and oocysts in Thoroughbred foals in central Kentucky in 2003. Fecal samples were examined from 733 foals on 14 farms. The host immune response has profound effects on parasitic nematode infections. Here we have investigated how a range of infection parameters are affected by host immune responses and by their suppression and enhancement. The infection parameters considered were the number of parasitic females, their size, per capita fecundity and intestinal position. We report the results of a retrospective study on the frequency of intestinal nematodes among 198 alcoholic and 440 nonalcoholic patients at the University Hospital Cassiano Antonio Moraes in Vit ria, ES, Brazil. The treatment of chronic and massive (uncomplicated) and severe (complicated) disseminated strongyloidosis, was presented from the historical point of view. The sequence of achievements in regard of treatment of the gentian violet, dithiazine iodide, benzimidazoles (thiabendazole, mebendazole, albendazole, cambendazole), ivermectin and cyclosporin A, was described. The recommendations for treatment of strongyloidosis are also given.

Strongyloides stercoralis is a nematode infection which predominantly involves the small bowel. Spillover infection to the colon does occur, but is uncommon and is usually associated with an immunocompromised host. Accurate diagnosis is essential and, as this case demonstrates, a long history does not preclude an infective aetiology.

The effects of trypanosome and helminth infections on health and production parameters in 2000 village N'Dama cattle were assessed periodically. Blood examination showed Trypanosoma congolense and Trypanosoma vivax to be prevalent, while strongylid-type eggs were those most frequently encountered in faecal samples. A case of reactive arthritis combined with uveitis associated with a longstanding and heavy infestation with Strongyloides stercoralis is reported in a 32-year-old HTLV-1 positive West Indian man. This paper gives the results of an ELISA test for Strongyloides stercoralis antibodies in a group of 436 ex Far East Prisoners of War (FEPOWs). Antigen was obtained from third-stage larvae of Strongyloides cebus. Sensitivity of the test is 97%, with a specificity of 99%. The test is being investigated further as regards cross-reactions with other helminths, but initial results look promising.

We report a case of pulmonary strongloidiasis which occurred after high-dose corticosteroid therapy. Our patient responded very well to treatment with thiabendazole, despite the fact that the steroids were contined throughout his entire hospital course. Further complications included pseudomonas meningitis and Klebsiella pneumoniae pneumonia, both of which resolved with appropriate treatment.
