To the best of our knowledge, no Chinese case studies concerning Nocardia infection have been published to date. Therefore, the present study aimed to retrospectively evaluate the risk factors, clinical features, imaging results, laboratory abnormalities, treatments and outcomes of nocardiosis in a Chinese tertiary hospital. Data collected from patients with laboratory-confirmed nocardiosis were retrospectively analyzed. A total of 40 patients who had a positive culture of Nocardia were included. The median time between the onset of symptoms and diagnosis was 42 days. Underlying diseases were

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to assess treatment outcomes in patients with cerebral abscess at a single institution based on 2 decades of experience. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study enrolled 112 patients diagnosed with cerebral abscess who underwent image-guided abscess drainage followed by antibiotic therapy between 2003 and 2023. We analyzed the patients' clinical, radiological, and laboratory parameters to identify factors associated with outcomes, as assessed by the Glasgow Outcome Scale (favorable ≥4, unfavorable <4), at discharge. In addition, we evaluated factors affecting the d

BACKGROUND: Microorganisms involved in cerebral abscess (CA) and cervical necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) are frequently commensals of the oral cavity. Yet, the reasons for their ability to cause severe opportunistic infections remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dental characteristics and examine the stimulated immune response in patients with a history of CA or cervical NSTI.
METHODS: This observational study includes a clinical dental examination, and the collection of blood samples from 18 previous CA patients and four previous cervical NSTI patients. W

Pituitary abscesses are an uncommon cause of pituitary lesions. A 77-year-old woman presented for elective resection of a presumed non-functioning pituitary macroadenoma in the context of a progressive left-sided visual field deficit. She proceeded to trans-sphenoidal resection of the pituitary lesion, with purulent fluid found upon opening the pituitary capsule. Culture of operative samples yielded Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum, susceptible to penicillin. Following debridement, treatment with 10-weeks of directed antimicrobials achieved good clinical response. This is the first reporte

BACKGROUND: Epicrania fugax is included in the appendix of the International Classification of Headache Disorders and is characterized as recurrent brief attacks of linear or zigzag pain moving across the cranial surface, commencing and terminating in the distribution of different nerves. We present a new case of epicrania fugax in which the headache was the presenting symptom of a cerebellar abscess.
CASE REPORT: We present a 58-year-old woman with prior history of Chiari I malformation who underwent suboccipital craniectomy. Two weeks after surgery, she experienced paroxysmal pain episodes

Epistaxis is a very common emergency in otorhinolaryngology. Anterior ethmoidal artery ligation using an external approach is one of the surgical options in posterior epistaxis. We present, to the best of our knowledge, the first reported case of an intracerebral abscess after epistaxis treatment with ligation of the anterior ethmoidal artery using an endoscopic-assisted external approach in a 56-year-old patient. The patient presented 4 days postoperatively with an orbital cellulitis. A CT was performed and a frontobasal hypodensity was found. An additional MR tomography the next day showed a

Behçet's disease is a multisystem relapsing inflammatory disorder of unknown cause. Neurological involvement is one of the most serious causes of long-term morbidity and mortality in Behçet's disease. Cerebral abscess is very rare in literature. A 45-yr-old man with Behçet's disease manifesting focal epileptic seizure and multiple cerebral abscesses is reported in the case. He was diagnosed with cerebral abscess and was treated with antibiotics but no improvement occurred. Excisional biopsy was performed and the lesions were consistent with abscess. The clinical state of the patient gradually

Left-sided valvular endocarditis (LSVE) is a common finding in slaughter pigs. The lesion is often associated with renal thromboembolism, but information on embolization to other organs is sparse. This study focuses on the presence and type of endocarditis-associated brain lesions (EABLs). The brains of 20 slaughter pigs with spontaneously arising LSVE and 11 controls were examined by sectioning half of a formalin-fixed brain into 4mm slices for histological examination. The aetiology of the endocarditis was determined by bacteriological and, in some cases, by fluorescence in-situ hybridizatio

Cronobacter spp. (formerly Enterobacter sakazakii) are rare causes of infant septicemia and meningitis, resulting in death in approximately 40% of cases. Since 1958, 120 cases of Cronobacter infection in infants have been reported, an average of fewer than three cases per year worldwide. Powdered infant formula (PIF), which is not sterile, has been implicated repeatedly as a vehicle of Cronobacter infection; consequently, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued guidelines for safer preparation, handling, and storage of PIF. This report describes isolation of Cronobacter spp. in two nonh

INTRODUCTION: The signal characteristics of an epidermoid on T2-weighted imaging have been attributed to the presence of increased water content within the tumor. In this study, we explore the utility of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and diffusion tensor metrics (DTM) in knowing the microstructural anatomy of epidermoid cysts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: DTI was performed in ten patients with epidermoid cysts. Directionally averaged mean diffusivity (D(av)), exponential diffusion, and DTM-like fractional anisotropy (FA), diffusion tensor mode (mode), linear (CL), planar (CP), and spherical (CS) a

INTRODUCTION: Metronidazole is a widely prescribed treatment for amoebic and anaerobic germ infections. Its neurologic toxicity is rare but can be serious.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 27-year-old male patient, treated with metronidazole for a cerebral abscess. He presented with a cerebellar syndrome and peripheral neuropathy at a cumulative metronidazole dose of 60g. The MRI aspect of the cerebellar lesions in addition to their reversibility after treatment cessation led to the diagnosis of metronidazole induced neurologic toxicity.
CONCLUSION: The occurrence of neurologic disorders

CASE REPORT: A 16-year-old male patient who had been treated at the age of 13 months with a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt due to obstructive hydrocephalus was presented to our department for a routine follow-up examination. The patient had tolerated well a shunt disconnection in 1990 and the distal part had been removed. Six years later radiological evaluation revealed an intracerebral mass adjacent to the remaining intraventricular catheter. The mass, histologically classified as an abscess, had to be removed 3 years later due to disease progression, although the patient remained asymptomat

BACKGROUND: Osteomas of the paranasal sinuses rarely lead to intracranial manifestations. We present an unusual case of a frontal sinus osteoma leading to intracerebral abscess formation.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 51-year-old Hispanic man presented with increasing frontal headaches, new onset seizure, lethargy, global dysphasia, and unilateral hemiparesis. CSF studies demonstrated mild pleocytosis. Neuroradiological studies revealed an opacity filling the left frontal sinus, as well as a ring-enhancing mass with surrounding edema in the left frontal lobe. The patient was surgically treated with a l

A 29-year-old male patient with clinical manifestations of panhypopituitarism and diabetes insipidus is presented. The clinical and laboratory evaluation of the pituitary reserve confirmed a total pituitary insufficiency. Computed tomography (CT) scan demonstrated a low-density lesion suggesting a pituitary tumor with suprasellar extension, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a pituitary mass with decreased signal intensity on T1-weighted images and capsular contrast enhancement after gadolinium injection. The surgical procedure was the treatment of choice. During surgery a large amo
