Intrabronchial infection of rhesus macaques with simian varicella virus results in a robust immune response in the lungs.

UNLABELLED: Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is the etiological agent of varicella (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles). Primary VZV infection is believed to occur via the inhalation of virus either in respiratory droplets or from shedding varicella lesions or by direct contact with infectious vesicular fluid. However, the ensuing immune response in the lungs remains incompletely understood. We have shown that intrabronchial inoculation of rhesus macaques with simian varicella virus (SVV), a homolog of VZV, recapitulates the hallmarks of acute and latent VZV infection in humans. In this study…

Measles vaccine virus mutation following vaccination in a healthy child resulting in a false negative vaccine specific PCR test: Ontario, Canada, 2025.

We report a case of a mild, self-limited rash illness in a child 18 days after measles-mumps-rubella-varicella vaccination. Initial testing with a PCR-based method failed to detect vaccine virus. Sequencing later identified a novel mutation in the probe-binding site of the vaccine assay that had arisen after vaccination and resulted in the false-negative PCR test results.

Postpartum Measles, Varicella, and Rubella Vaccination Rates in Serologically Non-Immune Mothers with Public Insurance at an Urban Tertiary Care Center.

The postpartum period provides an opportunity to improve maternal and infant health, including identifying risks and completing immunization series. Research on completion of varicella and measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine series among postpartum mothers is limited. This study examined data from mothers with public health insurance who received prenatal and postpartum care at the Mount Sinai Health System between January 1, 2021, and June 27, 2022. Two hundred and fifty-four (254; 11.9%) lacked immunity to at least one of these viruses: 104 to measles, 53 to rubella, and 137 to varicel

Disseminated vaccine-strain varicella-zoster virus reactivation in an adolescent with secondary immunodeficiency: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Routine childhood immunization against varicella-zoster virus has led to a dramatic reduction in the incidence of primary varicella. However, there are rare, yet significant cases reported of reactivated Oka-strain varicella, primarily in immunocompromised hosts. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old female with Hodgkin's lymphoma developed a vesicular rash shortly after completing all chemotherapy treatment. Swabs obtained from the vesicles were positive for varicella-zoster virus. By the time of hospitalization, the patient developed a disseminated rash involving multiple dermatomes.

Genetic changes in plaque-purified varicella vaccine strain Suduvax during in vitro propagation in cell culture.

Infection by varicella-zoster virus (VZV) can be prevented by using live attenuated vaccines. VZV vaccine strains are known to evolve rapidly in vivo, however, their genetic and biological effects are not known. In this study, the plaque-purified vaccine strain Suduvax (PPS) was used to understand the genetic changes that occur during the process of propagation in in vitro cell culture. Full genome sequences of three different passages (p4, p30, and p60) of PPS were determined and compared for genetic changes. Mutations were found at 59 positions. The number of genetically polymorphic sites (G

[Perinatal varicella: fetal and neonatal risks and management].

The occurrence of clinical varicella during pregnancy is rare but it may pose maternal and fetal risks. Perinatal maternal varicella may result in potentially severe neonatal varicella, especially when maternal eruptions occur between 5 days before and 2 days after delivery. We report eight cases of newborns of mothers with varicella in the peri-partum period in order to synthesize the current state of knowledge on the risk of contracting virus as well as to develop treatment protocol. We conducted a descriptive study at the Maternity and Neonatology Center, Sousse, over a period of 10 years.
