Quality of life among women living with HIV/AIDS in Yangon, Myanmar.

OBJECTIVE: Women living with HIV/AIDS have many problems, especially in their quality of life. Although they receive ARTI they still experience stress and are discriminated against in their communities. Stigmatization, social support and other individual factors such as disease progression, economic status and gender role are determinants of quality of life among women living with HIV/AIDS. This cross sectional study was aimed to measure the quality of life among women living with HIV/AIDS in Yangon and to identify the factors that are able to predict it. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 172 women living

Chronic pain in Holocaust survivors.

There is limited research on the connection between the Holocaust and chronic pain, despite evidence suggesting that medical and psychological sequelae are common in survivors. The goals of this study were: (1) to define Holocaust survivors' (n = 33) chronic pain characteristics as manifested 50 years after the war, (2) to compare survivors with controls (n = 33) who did not experience World War II atrocities, and (3) to investigate the connection between past trauma and chronic pain. Data were collected through questionnaires that included a detailed medical and pain history, visual analog sc

A Multidimensional Assessment of the Impact of Healthcare Volunteering in a War-Affected Setting.

Background: Medical students who volunteer during armed conflict may help sustain overwhelmed health services while experiencing concurrent social, academic, psychological, and physical consequences. However, no context-sensitive instrument has been available to assess these multidimensional benefits and burdens in active conflict settings. This study primarily aimed to develop and conduct an initial psychometric evaluation of the Volunteering Impact Scale (VIS) among medical students volunteering in Gaza and, secondarily, to characterize their volunteering experiences. Methods: A cross-sectio

Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Validation of the Polish Version of the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ).

Background/Objectives: Dentofacial deformities may adversely affect facial aesthetics, oral function, psychological well-being, and social functioning. The Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) is a condition-specific instrument developed to assess these effects, but no validated Polish version has previously been available. This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the OQLQ into Polish and evaluate its reliability and construct validity, including structural validity. Methods: The OQLQ was translated and culturally adapted in accordance with established guidelines. The st

Validation of a Composite Outcome Score for Assessing Return to Sports After Achilles Tendon Repair.

BACKGROUND: The Ankle-GO is a composite outcome score based on 4 functional tests and 2 patient-reported outcome measures. It was initially described and validated for its ability to predict return to sports (RTS) at the same level of play after lateral ankle sprains. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The main aim of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Ankle-GO in patients after Achilles tendon repair. The second objective was to evaluate its ability to predict RTS at the same level of play. It was hypothesized that this composite outcome score is a valid and reliable tool that is a

Subjective time perception in dementia: a behavioural and neuroanatomical analysis.

Subjective time perception-the modulation of elapsed clock time by sensory, homeostatic and psychological factors-is fundamental to how we experience the world. People with Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia often exhibit clinically relevant symptoms of altered temporal awareness but these are poorly understood. Here we addressed this issue in a cross-sectional, case-control study of 60 patients representing all major Alzheimer (n = 24) and frontotemporal (n = 36) syndromes [mean age 68.8 (range 48-77 years); 28% female] and 24 cognitively well age-matched controls [age 69.4 (6.5)

Diabetes-Related Distress in Spanish Adults: Clinical, Sociodemographic and Psychosocial Correlates.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes-related distress refers to the emotional strain experienced by individuals who live with diabetes and face continuous demands of treatment and self-management. Elevated distress is associated with poor adherence, impaired metabolic control, and diminished quality of life. This study aimed to describe diabetes-related distress among Spanish adults, analyse its associations with sociodemographic and clinical variables, identify predictors of higher distress, and define patient profiles with distinct psychosocial patterns. METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study was co

Integrated analysis of load-velocity profiles, muscle ultrasound measures, and lifestyle determinants in older adults with and without fall history.

Falls in older adults result from declines in muscle quality. This study aimed to examine differences in load-velocity profile (LVP) metrics, muscle ultrasound measures, strength, functional tests, and lifestyle between older adults with and without falls, and to analyze their association with sit-to-stand power. Sixty-two older adults (41 non-fallers, 21 fallers; mean age 68.32 ± 5.07 years) underwent three lab sessions. LVP was determined via functional electromechanical dynamometry during a loaded five times sit-to-stand test. Knee-extension, ankle-dorsiflexion, and handgrip strength were r

Hypervigilance and kinesiophobia characterize distinct exploratory data-driven profiles of temporomandibular disorders.

Hypervigilance and kinesiophobia have been associated with temporomandibular disorders (TMD), but their relationship with specific diagnostic profiles remains unclear. This study investigated the association between TMD diagnoses, hypervigilance, and kinesiophobia, and whether these variables could differentiate distinct clinical profiles across painful and non-painful conditions. In this multicenter cross-sectional observational study, 862 adults aged 18 to 50 years from Brazil, Chile, and Portugal were classified as controls, non-painful TMD, or painful TMD. Diagnoses were established using

Relationships of Personality Traits With the Taxonomic Composition of the Gut Microbiome Among Psychiatric Inpatients.

OBJECTIVE: Through the brain-gut-microbiome axis, myriad psychological functions that affect behavior share a dynamic, bidirectional relationship with the intestinal microbiome. Little is known about the relationship between personality-a stable construct that influences social- and health-related behaviors-and the bacterial ecosystem. The authors of this exploratory study examined the relationship between general and maladaptive personality traits and the composition of the gut microbiome. METHODS: In total, 105 psychiatric inpatients provided clinical data and fecal samples. Personality tra

Development of an Opioid Stigma Scale for People Living With Chronic Pain.

PURPOSE: High levels of stigma among patients with chronic pain contribute to negative psychological well-being. Existing measures have not focused on opioid stigma among individuals with chronic pain who may have legitimate need for opioid therapy. DESIGN: We developed a measure of opioid stigma that captures two constructs: perceived stigma (awareness of others' negative attitudes) and internalized stigma (application of stereotypes to oneself) among individuals with chronic pain. METHODS: We recruited 180 participants with chronic pain via the online platform CloudResearch to modify an ex

Multi-epigenome-wide analyses and meta-analysis of child maltreatment in judicial autopsies and intervened children and adolescents.

Child maltreatment (CM) is associated with adverse physical, psychological, and neurodevelopmental outcomes later in life. Epigenetic modifications, particularly DNA methylation, have been proposed as potential mechanisms underlying these long-term effects. To identify robust CM-associated methylation signatures, we conducted epigenome-wide analyses across three independent cohorts: judicial autopsy cases (CM:11, Controls:7), toddlers shortly after social intervention (CM:36, Controls:49), and adolescents who underwent brain MRI (CM:61, Controls:62). Each cohort was analyzed separately, follow

Psychological work capacity demands, according to Mini-ICF-APP-WS, on different health professionals - A naturalistic observation study.

PURPOSES: Capacity-oriented workplace-description is on the one hand, the basis for occupational health action, e.g. for reintegration and work adjustment. On the other hand, it is also necessary for preventive action, e.g. mental hazard analysis or job-matching. When self-ratings are used for a work description, that description must not be confused by an affective judgment about the workplace, e.g. work-satisfaction. Health professionals are especially prone for high workload and potentially a very broad spectrum of work-duties. Studying health professionals is valuable for gaining empirical

Creation of a shortened version of the Sleep Disorders Questionnaire (SDQ).

The 176-item Sleep Disorders Questionnaire (SDQ) was initially developed using canonical discriminant function analysis on 4 groups of sleep disorder patients, but it was never studied by factor analysis in its entirety. Several authors have criticized 2 of its subscales as being confounded with each other, and its narcolepsy scale as substantially over-diagnosing narcolepsy. This study describes its first exploratory factor analysis (EFA), the intent of which was to reassess item membership on the 4 existing subscales and to derive new scales to improve differential diagnosis between patient

Examining the validity of the addictions neuroclinical assessment domains in a crowdsourced sample of adults with current alcohol use.

Several dimensional frameworks for characterizing heterogeneity in alcohol use disorder (AUD) have been proposed, including the Addictions Neuroclinical Assessment (ANA). The ANA is a framework for assessing individual variability within AUD across three domains corresponding to the proposed stages of the addiction cycle: reward (binge-intoxication stage), negative emotionality (withdrawal-negative affect stage), and cognitive control (preoccupation-anticipation stage). Recent work has evaluated the ANA's three-factor structure and construct validity, primarily in treatment-seekers with AUD. W

Assessing Internalizing Symptoms and Their Relation with Levels of Impairment: Evidence-Based Cutoffs for Interpreting Inventory of Depression and Anxiety Symptoms (IDAS-II) Scores.

Tests and scales measuring psychological disorders should provide information about how scores relate to other constructs such as quality of life or functional impairment. Such information is necessary to allow that their scores contribute to clinical decision making. The current study analyzes the clinical utility of the Spanish version of the Inventory for Depression and Anxiety Symptoms (IDAS-II) to discriminate between different levels of functional impairment and identify the IDAS-II scales that contribute most to explaining impairment. The total sample (N = 1390) consists of two subsampl
