PURPOSE: The study was designed to investigate the influence of surrogate factors associated with sex (SH) and growth hormones (GH) on the risk of developing soft tissue sarcomas (STS).
BACKGROUND AND METHODS: The etiology of soft tissue sarcoma is largely unknown. We have studied the effect of hormone related factors on STS in the Swedish population between 1988 and 2009 using a population-based matched case-control design.

The commonest radiation-induced neoplasms are sarcomas. Ionizing radiation is not usually associated with the development of malignant melanoma. We report two patients with malignant melanoma occurring within a previously irradiated area. There is evidence to support radiation in the pathogenesis of melanoma but the family histories, especially in one patient, suggest that genetic mutations may also have played a role, particularly in relation to the short latent period.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are extremely rare in children. Imaging plays a key role in staging and monitoring therapy (surgical and with tyrosine kinase inhibitors). The vast majority of articles addressing imaging of GIST base on adults and are based on CT. The subtype "pediatric GIST" - if at all - is only mentioned in a dependent clause. BACKGROUND: The prognosis of patients with advanced sarcoma remains poor. Whether high-dose chemotherapy with stem cell support improves the long-term outcome for these patients or not is controversial.
METHODS: We present a large institutional experience of sarcoma patients treated with this therapy option. Thirty-eight patients with bone (n = 17) and soft tissue sarcomas (n = 21) were included. Apart from haematological complications, no WHO grade III-IV complications were observed. One patient died due to cardiac arrest after transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Primary hepatic sarcoma is a rare entity. The objectives of the study were to define treatment and long-term outcome and to identify prognostic factors.
METHODS: Between January 1981 and December 2004, 30 patients with primary sarcoma of the liver and 5 patients with primary carcinosarcoma of the liver were treated. Patient demographics, tumor characteristics, treatment, and actuarial survival were analyzed.

They have been previously reported in five cases of children with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). In 242 patients with recurrent soft-tissue sarcomas, the most common sites of initial recurrence were the primary site in 47.5% of patients and the lungs in 38% of patients. Further recurrences in the course of the disease concerned the lungs, bones, liver, and brain.
