Application Value of 4K High-Definition System in Laparoscopic Gastrectomy: Preliminary Results and Initial Experience.

Background: To investigate the application value of 4K high definition (HD) in laparoscopic gastrectomy by comparing the short-term outcomes … 8.94) and HD groups (27.69 ± 10.96). The score of group 3D was the lowest concerning asthenopia and motion sickness. On the contrary, 3D group achieved the highest score in topographical orientation and depth description. 4K group was graded the highest in terms of control co-ordination of visual angle, visual acuity, radiance, resolution ratio and frames, and re …

Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptors and M-Currents Underlie Efferent-Mediated Slow Excitation in Calyx-Bearing Vestibular Afferents.

Stimulation of vestibular efferent neurons excites calyx and dimorphic (CD) afferents. This excitation consists of fast and slow components … closure of KCNQ potassium channels. The clinical effectiveness of some anti-mAChR drugs in treating motion sickness suggest that we may, in fact, already be targeting the peripheral EVS.

Palonosetron versus other 5-HT₃ receptor antagonists for prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in patients with hematologic malignancies treated with emetogenic chemotherapy in a hospital outpatient setting in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the rate of uncontrolled chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) after initiating antiemetic prophyl … zability, absence of data on certain confounders including alcohol consumption and prior history of motion sickness, potential underestimation of incidence of uncontrolled CINV, and inability to draw conclusions pertaining to cause and effect relationship. CONCLUSION: In this retrospective hospital study, patients with hematologic malignancies treated with HEC o …

In-shoe force measurements from locomotion in simulated zero gravity during parabolic flight.

INTRODUCTION:: No effective countermeasure for space-induced bone loss has yet been identified. It has been hypothesized that an effective e … ere collected at 60 Hz using Pedar insoles. The number of parabolas per subject was variable due to motion sickness and hardware problems. RESULTS:: Analysis of the insole data showed that the average SLD load was only 35.2% BW, although the values ranged from 20.1% to 56.6%. Maximum ground reaction force values increased with increasing speed and were not affect …

How Does Smoking Cessation Affect Disease Activity, Function Loss, and Quality of Life in Smokers With Ankylosing Spondylitis?

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease that can progressively restrict spinal mobility. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate how smoking cessation by AS patients affects disease activity and their psychological state, physical mobility, lung function, and quality of life. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a longitudinal, single-blind, controlled, and observational study on 92 AS patients. Pulmonary function test, Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index, Bath Ankylosing Spondyliti

Pathologic lesions caused by coinfection of Mycoplasma gallisepticum and H3N8 low pathogenic avian influenza virus in chickens.

Chickens were infected under experimental conditions with Mycoplasma gallisepticum and low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) strain A/mallard/Hungary/19616/07 (H3N8). Two groups of chickens were aerosol challenged with M. gallisepticum strain 1226. Seven days later, one of these groups and one mycoplasma-free group was challenged with LPAI H3N8 virus; one group without challenge remained as negative control. Eight days later, the birds were euthanized and examined for gross pathologic and histologic lesions. The body weight was measured, and the presence of antimycoplasma and antiviral antibod

[Influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the physiotherapeutic and medical follow-up care after reconstructions of the anterior cruciate ligament].

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to examine the influence of the COVID-19(coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic on the medical and physiotherapeutic follow-up care after reconstructions of the anterior cruciate ligament. METHODS: 116 patients (72 men and 44 women) who had received a reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament between September 2019 and December 2020 were included in this study. These patients were divided into two groups depending on the date of surgery: one group that had received surgery in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic and one group that had undergone surgery in

Measurement of brain perfusion in newborns: pulsed arterial spin labeling (PASL) versus pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling (pCASL).

BACKGROUND: Arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been shown to be useful for identifying asphyxiated newborns at risk of developing brain injury, whether or not therapeutic hypothermia was administered. However, this technique has been only rarely used in newborns until now, because of the challenges to obtain sufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and spatial resolution in newborns. OBJECTIVE: To compare two methods of ASL-PWI (i.e., single inversion-time pulsed arterial spin labeling [single TI PASL], and pseudo-continuous art

The effects of dimenhydrinate, cinnarizine and transdermal scopolamine on performance.

We assessed the influence of dimenhydrinate, cinnarizine and transdermal scopolamine on the ability to perform simulated naval crew tasks. The effect of single doses of dimenhydrinate, 100 mg, cinnarizine, 50 mg, and one transdermal scopolamine patch on psychomotor performance was evaluated using a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, crossover design in three separate studies. A total of 60 young naval crew (20 for dimenhydrinate, 15 for cinnarizine and 25 for transdermal scopolamine) underwent a battery of computerized and paper and pencil performance tests, and filled out a questio

Arthroscopic versus open cancellous bone grafting for scaphoid delayed/nonunion in adults (SCOPE-OUT): study protocol for a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Scaphoid non-union results in pain and decreased hand function. Untreated, almost all cases develop degenerative changes. Despite advances in surgical techniques, the treatment is challenging and often results in a long period with a supportive bandage until the union is established. Open, corticocancellous (CC) or cancellous (C) graft reconstruction and internal fixation are often preferred. Arthroscopic assisted reconstruction with C chips and internal fixation provides minimal trauma to the ligament structures, joint capsule, and extrinsic vascularization with similar union rate

Impact of a simulated gravity load for atmospheric reentry, 10 g for 2 min, on conscious mice.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency recently performed a mouse experiment in the International Space Station in which mice were raised for 35 days, retrieved using the Dragon spacecraft, and then harvested for analysis 2 days after splashdown. However, the impact of the retrieval procedure, which exposed mice to 5-10 g for 2 min during atmospheric reentry and splashdown, was unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a 10 g load for 2 min (using a gondola-type centrifuge with a 1.5-m arm installed at Gifu University) on conscious mice. Plasma corticosterone i

Physiological and biomechanical considerations for a human Mars mission.

Evolving on Earth has made humans perfectly adapted, both physiologically and biomechanically, to its gravity and atmospheric conditions. Leaving the Earth and its protective environment, therefore, results in the degradation of a number of human systems. Long-duration stays on the International Space Station (ISS) are accompanied by significant effects on crew's cardiovascular, vestibular and musculoskeletal systems. Bone loss and muscle atrophy are experienced at a rate of 1-3% and 5% per month respectively, while VO2 (oxygen consumption) measurements are reduced by approximately 25% after a
