Predicting Different Types of Intimate Partner Aggression Perpetration: The Roles of Problem Alcohol Use and Distress Tolerance.

Intimate partner aggression (IPA) victimization and substance use have been well established as risk factors for IPA perpetration (Leonard, 2005; Sprunger et al., 2015). Recent research has identified a negative association between distress tolerance and physical and psychological IPA perpetration, specifically in males in substance use treatment (Shorey et al., 2017). Research examining the interplay of problem substance use, distress tolerance, and other forms of IPA (i.e., sexual coercion, controlling behaviors) in non-clinical samples is limited. The present analysis aimed to examine the p

Study of the Differential Consequences of Neglect and Poverty on Adaptive and Maladaptive Behavior in Children.

The consequences of physical neglect on retardation in the development of adaptive behaviors and the increased risk of poor physical and mental health are well documented. As physical neglect is a phenomenon found almost exclusively among socially deprived people, it is important to distinguish the health effects caused by neglect from those caused by poverty. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of poverty and physical neglect on the development of problematic externalizing and internalizing behaviors, adaptive skills, and school problems among school children between the ag

A small-fish model for behavioral-toxicological screening of new antimalarial drugs: a comparison between erythro- and threo-mefloquine.

BACKGROUND: New antimalarial drugs need to be developed because over time resistance against the existing drugs develops. Furthermore, some of the drugs have severe side effects. Here we describe a behavioral small-fish model for early detection of neurotoxic effects of new drugs. As case example we compare the effects of two mefloquine diastereomers on the behavior of goldfish using an automated 3D tracking system. FINDINGS: In a preliminary experiment, the overall toxic effects in terms of motor and respiratory impairments were determined during a 3-hour exposure to the drugs at relatively

Behavior Assessment Battery: A Pilot Study of the Affective, Behavioral, and Cognitive Correlates Surrounding Spasmodic Dysphonia.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: This study investigates if adults with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) report to experience anxiety and voice problems in particular situations, indicate the presence of negative speech-associated attitude, and/or the use of coping behaviors, by means of the Behavior Assessment Battery (BAB) modified for voice. METHODS: Thirty-two participants with ADSD and 32 adults without a voice disorder participated in this study. Each person completed four different BAB-Voice subtests. These standardized self-report tests are adaptations of the original BAB for people who stutt

Tic disorders in children with frequent eye blinking.

PURPOSE: To prospectively evaluate the significance of psychiatric consultation in children with frequent eye blinking. METHODS: Fifty children < 16 years of age with frequent eye blinking underwent a psychiatric examination after undergoing a detailed ophthalmologic examination and receiving appropriate treatment. Patients with squinting related to intermittent exotropia or uncorrected refractive errors were excluded. The severity of tic symptoms and the differences in mothering behavior and childhood behavioral problems between the children with tic and normal children were assessed. RESUL

Long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes of congenital diaphragmatic hernia survivors not treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Although there has been a marked improvement in the survival of children with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) in the past 2 decades, there are few reports of long-term neurodevelopmental outcome in this population. The present study examined neurodevelopmental outcomes in 10- to 16-year-old CDH survivors not treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). METHODS: Parents of 27 CDH survivors completed questionnaires assessing medical problems, daily living skills, educational outcomes, behavioral problems, and executive functioning. Fifteen CDH survivors and

Longitudinal relations between parenting stress and child internalizing and externalizing behaviors: Testing within-person changes, bidirectionality and mediating mechanisms.

INTRODUCTION: Parenthood can be experienced as a pleasant but challenging period for parents, possibly accompanied by parenting stress. Early parenthood in particular is a vulnerable period as many parents experience biological and psychosocial changes related to new parenthood. Previous studies have shown that parenting stress is related to child behavior problems, but few studies have investigated the transactional relations across time between parenting stress and child internalizing and externalizing outcomes separately, examining within-person changes. The first aim of this study was to e

Heart Rate Variability, Parental Stress, Child's Challenging Behaviour and Advanced Glycation End Products in Parents of Children With Chronic Conditions.

Child's challenging behaviours can pose complex, highly stressful demands on parents. Such chronic stress may affect autonomic regulation, particularly vagal balance, and increase oxidative stress and the risk of developing chronic diseases. This study investigated the association between the child's challenging behaviour and heart rate variability, psychological and oxidative stress in parents of children with chronic conditions. We included parents of children with autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, diabetes type 1, and parents of healthy children. Multivariate linear r

Risk Assessment of Maladaptive Behaviors in Adolescents: Nutrition, Screen Time, Prenatal Exposure, Childhood Adversities - Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

PURPOSE: We aimed to identify significant contributing factors to the risk of maladaptive behaviors, such as alcohol use disorder or obesity, in children. To achieve this, we utilized the extensive adolescent brain cognitive development data set, which encompasses a wide range of environmental, social, and nutritional factors. METHODS: We divided our sample into equal sets (test, validation; n = 3,415 each). On exploratory factor analysis, six factor domains were identified as most significant (fat/sugar intake, screen time, and prenatal alcohol exposure, parental aggressiveness, hyperactivit

Decision making and problem solving in adolescents who deliberately self-harm.

BACKGROUND: Healthy adolescents, and adults who engage in reward-driven, risky behaviours, demonstrate poor decision-making ability. Decision making in deliberate self-harm (DSH), a reward-driven, high-risk behaviour, has received little attention. This study assessed decision making and problem solving in adolescents with current or past SH. METHOD: Decision making and problem solving were assessed using the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and the Means-Ends Problem-Solving Procedure (MEPS) respectively in 133 adolescents (57 healthy and 22 depressed controls with no SH history and 54 with SH histo

Pathway from child sexual and physical abuse to risky sex among emerging adults: the role of trauma-related intrusions and alcohol problems.

PURPOSE: Some evidence suggests that risk reduction programming for sexual risk behaviors (SRB) has been minimally effective, which emphasized the need for research on etiological and mechanistic factors that can be addressed in prevention and intervention programming. Childhood sexual and physical abuse have been linked with SRB among older adolescents and emerging adults; however, pathways to SRB remain unclear. This study adds to the literature by testing a model specifying that traumatic intrusions after early abuse may increase risk for alcohol problems, which in turn may increase the lik

Study of the relative incidences of psychosocial factors before and after heart transplantation and the influence of posttransplantation psychosocial factors on heart transplantation outcome.

Psychosocial factors substance abuse, noncompliance, psychiatric problems, and obesity in relation to the outcome of heart transplantation have been investigated. Data were gathered at the time of initial assessment, and patients (n = 53) were monitored during the follow-up after heart transplantation (mean 18 months). Noncompliance, psychiatric problems, or excessive weight before heart transplantation continued after heart transplantation. Significantly fewer substance abusers exhibited similar behavior after heart transplantation (p < 0.01), although in many cases this exposed other psychia

Exploring associations of impulsivity with substance use, polysubstance use, and gambling behaviors through latent profiles.

Impulsivity is the tendency to act hastily in reaction to internal and external cues without consideration of all potential outcomes. Limited research has used a person-centered approach to explore patterns of impulsivity and risky behavior involvement, but not how different dimensions of impulsivity relate to multiple risk behaviors within the same individuals. The present study aimed to identify latent groups based on five self-report impulsivity measures and to assess differences in latent profiles as related to alcohol use and problems, drug use, gambling, and polysubstance use. Participan

Positive effects of early androgen therapy on the behavioral phenotype of boys with 47,XXY.

47, XXY occurs in up to 1 in 650 male births and is associated with androgen deficiency, neurodevelopmental delays, and atypical social-behaviors. Previously, we showed that young boys with 47, XXY who received early hormonal therapy (EHT) had significantly improved neurodevelopment. The objective of this follow-up study was to examine the effects of EHT on social behavior in boys with 47, XXY. The study consisted of boys prenatally diagnosed with 47, XXY who were referred for evaluations. Twenty-nine boys received three injections of 25 mg testosterone enanthate and 57 controls did not receiv

S100β in heavy metal-related child attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in an informal e-waste recycling area.

Exposure to lead even at low levels correlates with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, lead-contaminated environments are often contaminated with other heavy metals that could exacerbate lead-induced ADHD. We conducted this study to evaluate the relationship between multiple heavy metals and child behaviors, and the involvement of S100 calcium-binding protein β (S100β) expression in child ADHD in Guiyu, an internationally-known e-waste contaminated recycling town. Two hundred and forty kindergarten children, 3- to 7-years of age, who lived in Guiyu, were recruited for th

Smith Lemli-Opitz syndrome: a contribution to the delineation of a cognitive/behavioral phenotype.

AIM: Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS) is an autosomal recessive congenital malformation syndrome caused by an inborn error of cholesterol biosynthesis. The incidence is around 1:20000-1:70000. SLOS phenotype is very broad: severe phenotypes show exitus in perinatal period while milder phenotypes only show behavioral and learning problems. The purpose of this study is to further contribute to the delineation of a cognitive and behavioral phenotype in SLOS. METHODS: Nine patients with SLOS aged between 22 months and 25 years have been followed at the Department of Pediatrics, University of Nap
