Positive experiences of patient-centred care are associated with intentions to comply with fertility treatment: findings from the validation of the Portuguese version of the PCQ-Infertility tool.

STUDY QUESTION: Are positive experiences of different aspects of patient-centred care (PCC) associated with higher intentions to comply with fertility treatment? SUMMARY ANSWER: Positive experiences regarding information received, respect from staff about values and preferences, continuity in treatment and competence of staff are directly associated with higher compliance intentions, while positive experiences regarding accessibility to and involvement in the treatment and communication with staff are indirectly associated, via associations with less concerns about treatment. Mitigating disrespect and abuse during childbirth in Tanzania: an exploratory study of the effects of two facility-based interventions in a large public hospital.

BACKGROUND: There is emerging evidence that disrespect and abuse (D&A) during facility-based childbirth is prevalent in countries throughout the world and a barrier to achieving good maternal health outcomes. However, much work remains in the identification of effective interventions to prevent and eliminate D&A during facility-based childbirth. This paper describes an exploratory study conducted in a large referral hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania that sought to measure D&A, introduce a package of interventions to reduce its incidence, and evaluate their effectiveness. METHODS: After exte

A mixed methods study of a health worker training intervention to increase syndromic referral for gambiense human African trypanosomiasis in South Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Active screening by mobile teams is considered the most effective method for detecting gambiense-type human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) but constrained funding in many post-conflict countries limits this approach. Non-specialist health care workers (HCWs) in peripheral health facilities could be trained to identify potential cases for testing based on symptoms. We tested a training intervention for HCWs in peripheral facilities in Nimule, South Sudan to increase knowledge of HAT symptomatology and the rate of syndromic referrals to a central screening and treatment centre. A comfortable place to say goodbye.

No death is easy, but we hope to die peacefully, with our loved ones surrounding us, comforted by each other's presence and the knowledge that the right decision has been made. The nurse's actions in the intensive care unit setting can promote hope for a comfortable place to say goodbye for the patient and his/her loved ones and the nursing staff and physicians. When nurses make the intensive care unit a comfortable place for the dying patients and their loved ones, we also make the patients' deaths comfortable for us. The problems encountered in implementing end-of-life care are explored in t

Nurse practitioners in pediatric critical care: results of a national survey.

The nurse practitioner in pediatric critical care is a distinct advanced practice nursing role that has seen a tremendous increase in development and implementation over the past 10 years. There is a paucity of literature on this unique and valuable role. A total of 74 nurse practitioners practicing in pediatric critical care were surveyed. Part I of the survey solicited descriptive information of the nurse practitioner including background, work environment, reporting structure, and salary. The respondents also identified their role responsibilities that included direct patient management, nu

Caring for the Person's Mirror: The Entrustment of the Data-Person as a Nursing Theory for the Algorithmic Age.

Health data are born of a person's lived reality and carry that reality with them. They inhabit the systems that receive them, they feed the algorithms that learn from them, and they outlive the encounter in which they were produced. Nursing has begun to theorise its own side of this scene, from technological competency to frameworks for responsible artificial intelligence; the side of the person whose data have departed remains theoretically unattended. This essay proposes the Theory of the Entrustment of the Data-Person. Its founding act is the entrustment. Handing over one's need for care a

Walk a mile in my old shoes: an intervention study on age simulation suit training for correctional staff.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Correctional populations are ageing rapidly, yet correctional staff often lack the knowledge and attitudinal competencies required to address ageing-related needs. While simulation technologies, such as simulation suits, have demonstrated improvements in cognitive and affective learning outcomes within educational and clinical healthcare settings, their application in correctional training remains unexplored. This study examined the feasibility and exploratory outcomes of a training program incorporating ageing simulation into correctional staff training. RESEARCH D

Digital health literacy in Somali higher education: a public health agenda for navigating health misinformation and generative AI.

Digital health literacy is becoming a core public-health capability as health information is increasingly encountered through search engines, social media, digital services, and generative artificial intelligence (AI). University students are frequent users of these environments, yet digital access does not necessarily confer the ability to evaluate source credibility, recognize misinformation, judge the limits of AI-generated advice, protect personal data, or know when professional guidance is required. This Perspective argues that digital health literacy in Somali higher education should be

Grandparenting, intergenerational coparenting, and mental health of vulnerable children in Chinese families: risks, resilience, and clinical implications.

In China, grandparents serve as primary or co-caregivers for millions of children, particularly those separated from rural-to-urban migrant parents. This short communication synthesizes evidence on how grandparenting quality and intergenerational coparenting dynamics shape the mental health outcomes of vulnerable Chinese children, including those in left-behind, three-generation urban, and dual-income family configurations. We distinguish throughout between children whose parents have both migrated (leaving grandparents as sole custodial caregivers) and children who remain in triadic parent-gr

Beyond clinical care: A qualitative study on the leadership role of general practitioners in dutch interprofessional care for older adults.

BACKGROUND: Frail older adults increasingly require coordinated, interprofessional primary care, yet leadership within these loosely organised teams is often informal and poorly understood. While general practitioners (GPs) are often seen as having a central role in leadership, little is known about how they themselves perceive and enact this role. OBJECTIVES: To explore how Dutch GPs understand and operationalise informal leadership within interprofessional primary care teams caring for frail older adults. METHODS: A qualitative interview study was conducted with ten Dutch GPs using semi-st

A Systematic Review of Research on Communication in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has garnered significant attention globally for its holistic approach to healthcare and potential benefits for various health conditions. While much research has focused on its clinical efficacy, there is growing recognition for the importance of examining communication within TCM practice to ensure delivery of patient-centered care in cross-cultural healthcare settings. This systematic review aims to fill this gap by summarizing existing research on communication in TCM. Four databases, namely Medline, Web of Science (WoS), Linguistics and Language Behavior

Better guidelines, better patient lives: a sustainable partnership model for integrating lived experience into clinical guideline development.

To realize their full potential in improving health outcomes, clinical guidelines must integrate methodological rigor with practical relevance and human impact. This paper is a work of advocacy and a proposal for action. Drawing on established research, emerging paradigms, and our collective experience as patients and researchers as well as our respective backgrounds in legal, governance, and healthcare, we build a case that the systematic integration of lived experience-the unique embodied knowledge held by patients and caregivers-is essential for guideline relevance and implementation. Reaching the unreached: Task-shifting diabetic retinopathy screening in urban slums of low- and middle-income countries.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of preventable blindness, with the highest burden falling on populations living in urban slums and peri-urban settlements in low- and middle-income countries. These communities often remain outside the reach of conventional health systems due to systemic neglect, migratory lifestyles, and fragile infrastructure. Traditional facility-based screening models are often inaccessible, underscoring the urgent need for decentralized, community-embedded solutions. This review synthesizes global evidence on community and allied health worker (CAHW)-led DR scr
