Inducing forward head posture recalibrates the valuation of future rewards.

BACKGROUND: The ability to prioritize long-term goals over immediate rewards is a cornerstone of human self-regulation and life-course success. Emerging evidence suggests that axial postural orientation provides a continuous stream of proprioceptive feedback that modulates this temporal valuation process. Using the framework of grounded cognition, this study investigated whether inducing Forward Head Posture (FHP) influences the valuation processes underlying self-regulation and future-oriented choice. METHODS: Healthy young adults (N = 59) performed a Delay Discounting Task (DDT) and a contr

Characterization of the progressive neuroaxonal dystrophy and subsequent gait abnormalities in the Hspa8V95E knock-in rats.

Neuroaxonal dystrophy is a group of genetic neurodegenerative diseases that are histopathologically characterized by swollen axons (spheroids). We previously established a novel rat model of neuroaxonal dystrophy harboring a V95E missense mutation in the heat shock protein family A (HSP70) member 8 (Hspa8) gene that originally emerged by ENU-induced random mutagenesis. Hspa8V95E mutant rats show marked spheroid formation in the central nervous system and develop progressive hind limb ataxia. However, the detailed pathology of Hspa8V95E mutant rats remains to be elucidated. In the current study

Perceptual Design and Evaluation of a Forearm-Based Vibrotactile Interface for Transfemoral Prosthetic Feedback.

The lack of reliable sensory input from prosthetic limbs limits transfemoral amputees' ability to perceive limb movement without visual monitoring. This study evaluated design parameters of a proposed forearm-based vibrotactile system in a pre-clinical, design-level perceptual evaluation, conveying prosthetic joint positions through patterned vibrations to provide non-invasive proprioceptive feedback. Healthy participants completed two experiments assessing detection of tactile cues from dual-actuator bands on the wrist and elbow representing assumed ankle and knee positions. The effects of te

Stretch-evoked motor responses in the brainstem are modulated by task instructions.

Reliable noninvasive measurement of human brainstem activity during motor control remains challenging due to small anatomical structures and physiological noise, yet it is essential for understanding descending contributions to rapid feedback control. We used brainstem-optimized whole brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine whether task-dependent modulation of stretch-evoked motor responses in humans are associated with changes in activation within reticulospinal regions of the human brainstem. A behavioral validation experiment (N = 10), in which participants were instru

Vestibular syndrome associated with subcutaneous hemangiosarcoma in a cat.

Hemangiosarcomas (HSAs) are rare neoplasms in cats, with cutaneous and subcutaneous forms occurring more frequently than visceral HSAs and often associated with chronic ultraviolet radiation exposure. Herein, we report a case of vestibular syndrome secondary to subcutaneous hemangiosarcoma in a 2-year-old cat. The patient was presented with ataxia, proprioceptive deficits, cranial nerve palsy, mild nystagmus, and head tilt. The cat tested positive for feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), while complete blood count, serum biochemical profile, and albumin-to-glob

Functional brain network alterations in a rat model of dental malocclusion.

BACKGROUND: Malocclusion has been associated with alterations in central nervous system function; however, the effects of persistent abnormal occlusal input on whole-brain functional organization remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate functional brain network reorganization associated with unilateral anterior crossbite (UAC) in rats. METHODS: Fourteen female rats were used, seven of which were treated with left-sided UAC at 6 weeks old and the other seven served as sham-operation controls. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were acquired at 26 weeks ol

Case Report: Segmental spinal cord hypoplasia in a Labrador Retriever puppy.

This case report describes the clinical, diagnostic imaging, and histopathologic findings of spinal cord hypoplasia in a 13-week-old, intact male Labrador Retriever. The dog was first presented at 6 weeks of age with chronic and progressive gait abnormalities and fecal and urinary incontinence. On clinical examination, the puppy was bright, alert, and responsive but smaller than its siblings and showed poor muscle mass. No abnormalities were found in the general examination. Neurologic examination revealed mild kyphosis of the lumbar spine, ambulatory spastic paraparesis, proprioceptive pelvic

Tibialis Cranialis Extrafusal and Intrafusal Myofibers and Muscle Spindle Pathology in Canine Degenerative Myelopathy.

Canine degenerative myelopathy (DM) is a progressive, adult-onset neurodegenerative disease, with similarities to superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1)-associated ALS. Clinical signs of DM begin with asymmetric pelvic limb general proprioceptive ataxia and spastic paresis that progresses to flaccid tetraplegia and respiratory failure. Although pelvic limb muscle atrophy and peripheral neuropathy have been reported in DM, intramuscular SOD1 accumulation and muscle spindle pathology remain incompletely characterized. This study evaluated pathological changes in the tibialis cranialis muscle of Pembroke

Body Art: A Study on Aesthetics and Postural Instability in Patients With Piercings.

Body art is increasing in popularity around the world and may now be considered a mainstream activity even in Western society. In fact, nowadays, this practice has become customary, independent of social and cultural origin. The key motivating factors for obtaining body piercings are individual expression, personal image management, and art. Research in psychology and sociology has shown that the body is not considered acceptable if it is not covered with signs of belonging; that is the reason why an increasing number of people adorn themselves with often permanent decorations. As the prevalen

Comprehensive analysis of the C. elegans connectome reveals novel circuits and functions of previously unstudied neurons.

Despite decades of research on the Caenorhabditis elegans nervous system based on an anatomical description of synaptic connectivity, the circuits underlying behavior remain incompletely described and the functions of many neurons are still unknown. Updated and more complete chemical and gap junction connectomes of both adult sexes covering the entire animal including the muscle end organ have become available recently. Here, these are analyzed to gain insight into the overall structure of the connectivity network and to suggest functions of individual neuron classes. Modularity analysis divid

Art therapy and brain injury: making the invisible visible.

The multiple cognitive, somatic, and behavioral changes following head injuries can result in expressive language difficulties that may not be resolved quickly. This paper explores the traumatic brain injury and post-concussive syndrome artwork created by an art therapist and the child of an art therapist, making the invisible neurological consequences of head injuries visible. Our first-person and caregiver perspectives offer examples of visual arts-based communication between patients, health professionals, and family members. Utilizing client imagery as a form of communication may improve p
