Dengue is currently the most important viral disease transmitted by arthropods and which is hyperendemic in the Americas. An increase in the number of cases is related to dengue during pregnancy and the neonatal period. According to the gestational age in which infection occurs, there could be different manifestations in the fetus including abortion, malformations or neonatal dengue in newborns. This article presents a review regarding some cases reported worldwide, especially in the Americas, and some pathophysiologic issues related to perinatal dengue.

Post-partum ovarian vein thrombosis (POVT) is uncommon, but the true incidence is not known. Ninety per cent of cases present as right iliac fossa pain within 10 days of delivery. Anti-coagulation and intravenous antibiotics are the mainstay of treatment. We report three cases that were referred to our unit. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura-hemolytic uremic syndrome (TTP-HUS) is more common in women, and commonly occurs during pregnancy and the immediate postpartum period. Prosthetic valve thrombosis is associated with high mortality. The treatment of choice remains operation. This is a case report of the successful combination therapy of tissue plasminogen activator and urokinase for an isolated thrombosed prosthetic mitral valve in a postpartum patient in whom operation was thought to carry an unacceptable risk. Combined thrombolytic therapy or therapy with a single agent with a long half-life and a prolonged infusion time is suggested as an emergent treatment option for prosthetic mitral valve thrombosis.

The presence of autoimmune gastritis was investigated in 54 women with postpartum thyroiditis. Parietal cell antibodies (PCA) specific against H+, K(+)-adenosine triphosphatase (EC 3.6.1.36) were found in 18 women during pregnancy; in 10 of them, a 2-9-fold increase in the PCA level was observed in the postpartum period.
