Two cases of Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection are described. Both patients were expatriates from the Indian subcontinent, and reported the use of corticosteroids. The first patient presented with severe pulmonary disease that necessitated respiratory support, followed by acute abdomen and intestinal obstruction and he succumbed to these diseases. The second patient also presented with acute pulmonary disease, which responded to antihelmintic treatment and supportive care; however, he died later due to his primary disease. The clinical features of S stercoralis hyperinfection are nonspe

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis is a soil-transmitted nematode that can replicate within its host, leading to long-lasting and potentially fatal infections. It is ubiquitous and highly prevalent in Cambodia. The extent of morbidity associated with S. stercoralis infection is difficult to assess due to the broad spectrum of symptoms and, thus, remains uncertain.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Clinical signs were compared among S. stercoralis infected vs. non-infected participants in a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2012 in eight villages of Northern Cambodia, and before and after t

Strongyloidosis is a neglected disease that affects millions of people around the world. The cases that particularly deserve attention are those related to hyperinfection, mainly in immunocompromised patients. In this sense, there is a need to improve the serological diagnosis of this helminth. The objective of this study was therefore to produce and characterize excretory/secretory (E/S) antigens of Strongyloides venezuelensis infective larvae (L3) for use as a heterologous antigen in the diagnosis of human strongyloidosis and other parasitic infection groups. Soluble antigenic preparations w

A 62-year-old woman complained of diarrhea and vomiting after receiving chemotherapy for cervical cancer in association with high doses of corticosteroids. Two months later, the patient developed acute respiratory distress syndrome, and numerous Strongyloides stercoralis parasites were found in the intrabronchial discharge. Ivermectin was administered daily until nematodes were no longer detected in the sputum, and the patient's condition was successfully rescued. Antibodies for human T-cell lymphotropic virus-1 (HTLV-1) were positive. HTLV-1 infection and the administration of corticosteroids

This study was performed to evaluate nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and real-time PCR methods for detection of Strongyloides stercoralis in fecal samples compared with parasitological methods. A total of 466 stool samples were examined by conventional parasitological methods (formalin ether concentration [FEC] and agar plate culture [APC]). DNA was extracted using an in-house method, and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 and 18S ribosomal genes were amplified by nested PCR and real-time PCR, respectively. Among 466 samples, 12.7% and 18.2% were found infected with S. stercor

Parasitic infections of the lung occur worldwide among both immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients and may affect the respiratory system in a variety of ways. This review provides an update on the presenting symptoms, signs, investigation and management of diseases affecting the lung caused by protozoa, nematodes and trematodes. The clinical presentations and radiographic findings of several of these diseases may mimic tuberculosis and malignancy. It is important to consider parasitic infections in the differential diagnosis of such lung diseases. If identified early, most parasitic di

This report examines an unusual case of Srongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection in a 63-yr-old man. The patient had a history of vitamin B deficiency, on and off diarrhea, and clinical pellagra for a decade and a half. There was also evidence of extreme eosinophilia. The patient did not have any associated illness suggestive of immunosuppression. Treatment with ivermectin resulted in remarkable clinical improvement and reversion of eosinophil count to normal.

We report a case of fatal Strongyloides stercoralis (S. stercoralis) infection in a 35-year-old female with lupus glomerulonephritis after prolonged steroid therapy. An epidemiological evaluation revealed that our patient originated from a rural area in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was an endemic region of S. stercoralis infection in the former Yugoslavia. She had severe gastrointestinal and pulmonary symptoms and history of a 13 kg weight loss in 3 months. Histopathological examination of large bowel mucosa showed nematode larvae. Microscopy of stool, sputum and urine samples confirmed S. st

The formation of Strongyloides stercoralis infections in the tropical countries and in the temperate climatic zone, with special attention to the factors and the high risk groups, were described. The concurrent infections, prevention and control of strongyloidosis was also presented.

A case of presumed person-to-person transmission of Strongyloides steracolis is described. The index case was immunocompromised following high dose glucocorticosteroid therapy for myelodysplasia, which resulted in reactivation of latent strongyloides infection with the hyperinfestation syndrome. Physicians unfamiliar with this disease should realize that a history of foreign travel is unnecessary to acquire this parasite, and that transmission to persons in close proximity to the index case does occur and warrants treatment.

A 69-year-old male chronic alcohol abuser suffering from diarrhoea and with a number of discrete pruriginous and erythematous lesions of the trunk was referred to our Unit with a diagnosis of idiopathic eosinophilic colitis in order that we might determine corticosteroid treatment. Diagnosis was based on the presence of marked peripheral eosinophilia and massive eosinophilic infiltration at colonic biopsy, and the exclusion of parasitic infection by means of two different microscopic stool examinations of five samples. However, repeated stool examinations of ten samples collected on separate d

C57BL/6 mice genetically deficient in interleukin-5 (IL-5-/-) and normal C57BL/6 (IL-5+/+) mice were infected with larvae of a homogonic strain of the nematode Strongyloides ratti. In primary infections both male and female IL-5-/- mice released two to four times more eggs and larvae than IL-5+/+ mice. IL-5-/- mice harboured about 60% more intestinal worms, which were more fecund, than IL-5+/+ mice. The duration of the infection was similar in normal and IL-5-deficient mice. Both IL-5-/- and IL-5+/+ mice resisted a secondary infection. IL5-/- mice lost more weight during the infection than nor

Parasite levels were determined for 141 members of a naturally formed social group of rhesus macaques living under free-ranging conditions. Results indicate that group members harbor Trichuris trichiura, Balantidium coli, and large numbers of Strongyloides fuelleborni. Parasite counts decrease significantly with age in this population. Females have significantly fewer parasites than males and a significantly lower prevalence of multiple infections. There were no rank effects regarding parasitosis. While 89% of the animals examined are infected with one or more species of enteric parasite, the
