Epidemiology of Diabetic Retinopathy at Eye Clinic Svjetlost Sarajevo: Two Years Retrospective Single Center Study.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is an important cause of blindness, and occurs as a result of long-term accumulated damage to the small blood vessels in the retina. 2.6% of global blindness can be attributed to diabetes. Disease severity was most often classified by the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) classification for DR severity. Patients are usually categorized based on the severity of DR as having mild nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), moderate NPDR, severe NPDR, or proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). AIM: To evaluate DR status among patients

Eye Care Quality and Accessibility Improvement in the Community (EQUALITY) for adults at risk for glaucoma: study rationale and design.

BACKGROUND: Primary open angle glaucoma is a chronic, progressive eye disease that is the leading cause of blindness among African Americans. Glaucoma progresses more rapidly and appears about 10 years earlier in African Americans as compared to whites. African Americans are also less likely to receive comprehensive eye care when glaucoma could be detected before irreversible blindness. Screening and follow-up protocols for managing glaucoma recommended by eye-care professional organizations are often not followed by primary eye-care providers, both ophthalmologists and optometrists. There is

[Toxoplasmosis in pregnancy: recent acquisitions and new prospects].

Congenital toxoplasmosis may develop after maternal primary infection during pregnancy. The infection is usually asymptomatic in pregnant women but poses a risk of severe effects on the fetus. In Italy the incidence is about 6 per thousand. The infection is transmitted to the fetus in approximately 50 percent of such cases. The risk of transmission rises with growing gestational age at the time of primary infection; on the contrary, the seriousness of the effect on the fetuses becomes less active with more advanced pregnancies. Infants with congenital toxoplasmosis are mostly asymptomatic at b

A step toward inclusion: A transparent dataset for automatic text simplification for screen reader users.

GeoSimp is a Spanish-language dataset for automatic text simplification (ATS), comprising approximately 3200 discourse segments derived from peer-reviewed geological scientific articles. The dataset was constructed to address two documented gaps in existing ATS resources: the limited availability of Spanish-language corpora for text simplification and text complexity classification, and the scarcity of domain-specific datasets focused on specialized scientific writing. Source texts were drawn exclusively from articles published in the Revista Geológica de América Central, a peer-reviewed, open

Identifying and addressing health problems of school children through the Omaha System: a nurse-led intervention study in suburban Istanbul.

BACKGROUND: Health problems such as anxiety, depression, obesity, and dental caries are increasingly common among school-aged children. Early detection and timely interventions are essential to promote healthy childhoods and reduce future healthcare burdens. Especially in Turkey, few studies have addressed schoolchildren’s health problems holistically, particularly using the Omaha System. This study aimed to identify the physiological, psychosocial, health-related behavioral, and environmental health problems of migrant and non-migrant schoolchildren in suburban Istanbul, to implement person-c

In Vitro Characterization of Insulin-Loaded Soft Contact Lenses and Their Effect on Corneal Epithelial Cell Viability and Permeability.

Background/Objectives: Corneal epithelial defects and ulcers remain a significant clinical challenge, often leading to vision impairment and requiring prolonged treatment. In this context, topical insulin has recently gained attention in ophthalmic research. However, conventional eye drops suffer from short residence time and poor bioavailability. To overcome these limitations, the present study evaluates, for the first time in vitro, multiple commercially available soft contact lenses as sustained insulin delivery platforms, analyzing how protein loading influences the essential physicochemic

Baicalin affects the progression of diabetic retinopathy through the RAGE/PXDN/PI3K/AKT pathway.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness-related eye diseases in adults. The pathogenesis of DR is attributed to the excessive proliferation of microvessels, which leads to vitreous haemorrhage and retinal traction, thereby significantly damaging the patient's vision. In this study, we investigated the role and molecular mechanism of Peroxidasin (PXDN) and the active ingredient baicalin (BAI) of traditional Chinese medicine in regulating the senescence and pathological angiogenesis of human retinal microvascular endothelial cells (HRMECs) to identify the key gene

Sports promote brain evolution: a resting-state fMRI study of volleyball athlete.

BACKGROUND: Long-term skill learning can lead to structure and function changes in the brain. Different sports can trigger neuroplasticity in distinct brain regions. Volleyball, as one of the most popular team sports, heavily relies on individual abilities such as perception and prediction for high-level athletes to excel. However, the specific brain mechanisms that contribute to the superior performance of volleyball athletes compared to non-athletes remain unclear. METHOD: We conducted a study involving the recruitment of ten female volleyball athletes and ten regular female college student

Integrative study of gene expression datasets in retinal samples of Diabetic Retinopathy.

Diabetic Retinopathy is prevalent among patients with uncontrolled hyperglycemia resulting in vision loss. Despite numerous challenges to create a link among these conditions, the characterization of pathological neovascularization causing retinal damage due to the prognosis of early non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy to late proliferative diabetic retinopathy needs deep understanding. In this study, meta-analysis-based integration of gene expression datasets for the fibrovascular membrane of PDR and neural retina of NPDR were compared, to investigate the differentially expressed genes inv

Hsp90-associated DNA replication checkpoint protein and proteasome-subunit components are involved in the age-related macular degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss worldwide. However, the mechanisms involved in the development and progression of AMD are poorly delineated. We aimed to explore the critical genes involved in the progression of AMD. METHODS: The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in AMD retinal pigment epithelial (RPE)/choroid tissues were identified using the microarray datasets GSE99248 and GSE125564, which were downloaded from the gene expression omnibus database. The overlapping DEGs from the two datasets were screened to identify DEG-related biolo

Novel mutations associated with autosomal-dominant congenital cataract identified in Chinese families.

As the leading cause of impaired vision, congenital cataracts, particularly autosomal dominant congenital cataract (ADCC), have been considered as a hereditary disease. The present study aimed to identify genetic defects in Chinese pedigrees with ADCC. A total of 6 Chinese families with ADCC were included, comprising 103 members and 27 patients assessed in total. Genomic DNA samples were extracted from the peripheral blood of probands; mutations were determined using a specific eye disease enrichment panel with next-generation sequencing. Following pathogenicity prediction, sites with notable

Measuring adult breathing pattern: devices, outcomes, and evidence-a scoping review.

PURPOSE: To map instruments and protocols used to assess adult breathing pattern (BP), describe the outcomes they yield, appraise reported measurement properties, and identify whether any single modality is "clinically ready." The review asks which instruments and protocols quantify adult BP, which outcomes are reported (e.g., rate, amplitude, I:E ratio, thoracoabdominal mobility), and what evidence exists for reliability, sensitivity, or specificity. METHODS: A scoping review, guided by Joanna Briggs Institute methods and reported per PRISMA-ScR, was undertaken. Searches in Scopus, Web of Sc
