Psychometric evaluation of the thought-action fusion scale in a large clinical sample.

This study examined the psychometric properties of the 19-item Thought-Action Fusion (TAF) Scale, a measure of maladaptive cognitive intrusions, in a large clinical sample (N = 700). An exploratory factor analysis (n = 300) yielded two interpretable factors: TAF Moral (TAF-M) and TAF Likelihood (TAF-L). A confirmatory bifactor analysis was conducted on the second portion of the sample (n = 400) to account for possible sources of item covariance using a general TAF factor (subsuming TAF-M) alongside the TAF-L domain-specific factor. The bifactor model provided an acceptable fit to the sample da

Rare variants in TMEM132D in a case-control sample for panic disorder.

Genome-wide association studies have identified common variants associated with common diseases. Most variants, however, explain only a small proportion of the estimated heritability, suggesting that rare variants might contribute to a larger extent to common diseases than assumed to date. Here, we use next-generation sequencing to test whether such variants contribute to the risk for anxiety disorders by re-sequencing 40 kb including all exons of the TMEM132D locus which we have previously shown to be associated with panic disorder and anxiety severity measures. DNA from 300 patients sufferin

Specificity of interpersonal problems in generalized anxiety disorder versus other anxiety disorders and depression.

We examined the diagnostic specificity of interpersonal problems (IP) in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). We expected generally higher interpersonal distress, and specifically higher levels of nonassertive, exploitable, overly nurturant, and intrusive behavior in n = 58 patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition GAD compared with patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (n = 46), other anxiety disorders (n = 47), and unipolar depressive disorders (n = 47). IP were assessed with the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems. Specificity in the sense of hei

Non-psychotic psychiatric disorders after childbirth: prevalence and comorbidity in a community sample.

BACKGROUND: Postnatal psychiatric morbidity is a frequent and serious complication of childbirth. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence and co-occurrence of DSM-IV psychiatric disorders in a community sample of postpartum Spanish mothers. METHODS: A two-phase cross-sectional study was conducted in which all consecutive women attending the routine 6-week postnatal control visit at the Department of Obstetric and Gynecology of a university-affiliated hospital over a one year period were included. In the first phase, 1453 women were screened with the Edinburgh Postnatal De

Interaction between smoking rate and anxiety sensitivity: relation to anticipatory anxiety and panic-relevant avoidance among daily smokers.

The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the moderating role of anxiety sensitivity (AS) in the relation between smoking rate and panic vulnerability variables, both concurrently and prospectively (3 months), among a community-based sample of 125 daily smokers (60 females; M(age) =26.02 years, S.D. =10.98). Consistent with prediction, the interaction between AS and smoking rate significantly predicted concurrent agoraphobic avoidance (3.2% of unique variance) and change in levels of anticipatory anxiety during the 3-month follow-up period (4.7% unique variance). Smokers high in AS

Axis I and II comorbidities in subjects with and without nocturnal panic.

Our purpose in this study was to compare the prevalence and pattern of Axis I and II comorbidities between patients with and without nocturnal panic (NP) attacks. One hundred and sixteen subjects with panic disorder (PD; according to DSM-IV criteria) were included: We assessed Axis I and II comorbidities using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I and II disorders, respectively. Of the sample, 27.6% of subjects had recurrent nocturnal panic attacks (NP group). Subjects with NP did not differ from those without in any sociodemographic or clinical characteristics. In the sample (94

Profile of a large sample of patients with social phobia: comparison between generalized and specific social phobia.

This study examines a large cohort of subjects with social phobia, as part of a larger naturalistic and longitudinal study of 711 subjects with anxiety disorders. We focused on 176 subjects who were in an episode of social phobia at intake. We were particularly interested in evaluating the diagnostic distinction between generalized and specific social phobia. We compared these two groups along demographic characteristics, comorbidities, psychosocial functioning (health, role functioning, social functioning, and emotional functioning) and global assessment scores. We found that generalized soci

Environmental factors related to the outcome of panic disorder. A seven-year follow-up study.

The purpose of this study was to examine factors related to the outcome of naturalistically treated panic disorder. In order to achieve this we followed up 69 patients 7 years after they had presented at a psychiatric clinic. At follow-up, the patients were generally doing well despite persisting symptoms. Patients who were more severely ill at the time of initial assessment had a worse outcome. These patients had more severe panic and agoraphobic symptoms, had illnesses of longer duration, and more often had histories of major depression. Among the developmental variables examined, separation

Comparing two brief psychological interventions to usual care in panic disorder patients presenting to the emergency department with chest pain.

BACKGROUND: Panic disorder (PD) is a common, often unrecognized condition among patients presenting with chest pain to the emergency departments (ED). Nevertheless, psychological treatment is rarely initiated. We are unaware of studies that evaluated the efficacy of brief cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) for this population. AIM: Evaluate the efficacy of two brief CBT interventions in PD patients presenting to the ED with chest pain. METHOD: Fifty-eight PD patients were assigned to either a 1-session CBT-based panic management intervention (PMI) (n = 24), a 7-session CBT intervention (n =

Should psychological distress screening in the community account for self-perceived health status?

OBJECTIVE: Psychological distress questionnaires are often used as screening instruments for mental disorders in clinical and epidemiologic settings. Poor physical health may affect the screening properties of a questionnaire. We evaluate the effect of self-perceived health status on the screening performance of the Kessler K10 and K6 scales in a community sample. METHODS: We used data from the Canadian Community Health Survey: Mental Health and Well-Being (CCHS 1.2). Psychological distress was measured by the 6-item (K6) and the 10-item (K10) Kessler instrument. Depression and anxiety disord

Coping strategies and distress reduction in psychological well-being? A structural equation modelling analysis using a national population sample.

BACKGROUND: Little is understood about of the role of coping strategies in psychological well-being (PWB) and distress for the general population and different physical and psychiatric disease groups. A thorough examination of these relationships may provide evidence for the implementation of public mental health promotion and psychiatric disease prevention strategies aimed at improving the use of positive coping approaches or addressing the causes and maintainers of distress. The present study using a structural equation modelling (SEM) approach and nationally representative data on the Canad

Plant-based medicines for anxiety disorders, part 2: a review of clinical studies with supporting preclinical evidence.

Research in the area of herbal psychopharmacology has revealed a variety of promising medicines that may provide benefit in the treatment of general anxiety and specific anxiety disorders. However, a comprehensive review of plant-based anxiolytics has been absent to date. Thus, our aim was to provide a comprehensive narrative review of plant-based medicines that have clinical and/or preclinical evidence of anxiolytic activity. We present the article in two parts. In part one, we reviewed herbal medicines for which only preclinical investigations for anxiolytic activity have been performed. In

Efficacy of an Internet-based intervention with self-applied exposure therapy in virtual reality for people with panic disorder: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Due to several treatment barriers, many individuals with panic disorder do not receive evidence-based treatment. One promising option to narrow this treatment gap is Internet-based psychotherapy, which has been shown particularly effective in guided formats. Still, there remains room for improvement to make these digital therapies more accessible, cost-efficient, and aligned with best practices for in-person interventions (e.g., exposure). The smartphone app "Invirto - Treatment for Anxiety" offers digitally guided, evidence-based treatment of panic disorders including virtual real

Experiences of Patients and Therapists Testing a Virtual Reality Exposure App for Symptoms of Claustrophobia: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of virtual reality exposure (VRE) in the treatment of anxiety disorders is well established. Several psychological mechanisms of VRE have been identified, whereby both emotional processing and the sense of presence play a key role. However, there are only few studies that contribute to our knowledge of examples of implementation in the case of VRE for claustrophobia based on patients' experiences and the perspective of therapists. OBJECTIVE: This study asks for key elements of a VRE app that are necessary for effective exposure for people with claustrophobic symp
