Sensitive periods for exposure to indoor air pollutants and psychosocial factors in association with symptoms of psychopathology at school-age in a South African birth cohort.

Exposure to environmental toxicants and psychosocial stressors during gestation and early life are particularly harmful and may impact brain development. Specifically, exposure to indoor air pollutants (IAP) and psychosocial factors (PF) during these sensitive periods has been shown to predict childhood psychopathology. Here, we investigated sensitive periods for the individual and joint effects of IAP and PF on childhood psychopathology at 6.5 years. We analyzed data from the Drakenstein Child Health Study (N = 599). Exposure to IAP and PF was measured during the second trimester of pregnancy

Early mother-infant interactions within the context of childbirth-related posttraumatic stress symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Childbirth may lead to perinatal mental health issues, such as childbirth-related posttraumatic stress symptoms (CB-PTSS), depression, and anxiety. Despite well explored mother-infant interactions in the context of maternal depression and anxiety, only limited studies investigated mother-infant interactions in the context of CB-PTSS, which is the aim of the present study. METHODS: One-hundred mother-infant dyads in the French speaking part of Switzerland were classified into three groups: birth-related symptoms (BRS, i.e., symptoms of re-experiencing and avoidance) (n = 20), gener

Patterns in paternal and maternal filicide: A comparative analysis of filicide cases in Turkey.

Filicide is the act of a parent killing their own offspring. Previous studies indicate that there are both commonalities and distinctions between filicides committed by mothers and fathers. The main objective of this study was to compare maternal and paternal filicide with a major focus on clinical and sociodemographic features of perpetrators, incident details, and victims. Filicide cases were examined at the bedded unit of the Expertise Department of Observation of the Council of Forensic Medicine that were referred by the Turkish Ministry of Justice. A total of 51 perpetrators and 57 victim

The association between prenatal psychosocial factors and autism spectrum disorder in offspring at 3 years: a prospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Few studies of risk factors for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been prospective in design or investigated the role of psychosocial factors measured during pregnancy. We aimed to investigate associations between prenatal psychosocial factors and risk of ASD in offspring, as part of a multicenter prospective cohort study of more than 2000 mother-child pairs. METHODS: Nulliparous women aged 18-35 years, living in Pennsylvania, USA, were interviewed during pregnancy and multiple times postpartum over the course of a 3-year period. There were 2388 mothers who completed the Screen for

Longitudinal risk of maternal hospitalization for mental illness following preterm birth.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth may affect maternal mental health, yet most studies focus on postpartum mental disorders only. We explored the relationship between preterm delivery and the long-term risk of maternal hospitalization for mental illness after pregnancy. METHODS: We performed a longitudinal cohort study of 1,381,300 women who delivered between 1989 and 2021 in Quebec, Canada, and had no prior history of mental illness. The exposure was preterm birth, including extreme (<28 weeks), very (28-31 weeks), and moderate to late (32-36 weeks). The outcome was subsequent maternal hospitalizatio

Association between Stress Urinary Incontinence and Depressive Symptoms after Birth: the Czech ELSPAC Study.

The study objectives were to (1) identify risk factors related to stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and postnatal depression (PD) after birth, and (2) investigate both possible directions of association between SUI and PD in population-based sample of Czech mothers. 3,701 nulliparous and multiparous women completed the self-reported questionnaires at 6 weeks and 6 months after birth and were included into the analyses of this prospective cohort study. Unadjusted and adjusted logistic regressions examined relationship between SUI a PD accounting for range of other risk factors. During the first

Work Reentry After Childbirth: Predictors of Self-Rated Health in Month One Among a Sample of University Faculty and Staff.

BACKGROUND: Childbirth represents a significant transition for women, with physical and psychological sequelae. Reentry to the workplace during the postpartum period is understudied, with implications for maternal well-being and job-related outcomes. This study's aim was to examine selected pregnancy, childbirth, and return-to-work correlates of overall self-rated health within the first month of work reentry after maternity leave. METHODS: Between December 2016 and January 2017, we surveyed women employed at a large, public Midwestern university who had given birth in the past five years (N

High-frequency intimate partner violence during pregnancy, postnatal depression and suicidal tendencies in Harare, Zimbabwe.

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a common form of violence experienced by pregnant women and is believed to have adverse mental health effects postnatally. This study investigated the association of postnatal depression (PND) and suicidal ideation with emotional, physical and sexual IPV experienced by women during pregnancy. METHODS: Data were collected from 842 women interviewed postnatally in six postnatal clinics in Harare, Zimbabwe. We used the World Health Organization versions of IPV and Centre for Epidemiological Studies - Depression Scale measures to assess IPV and PND

A comprehensive analysis of adverse obstetric and pediatric complications in women with asthma.

RATIONALE: Previous studies have raised concern that women with asthma have increased risks of adverse obstetric and pediatric complications, but these have generally been underpowered. OBJECTIVES: To quantify risks of major adverse pregnancy outcomes and obstetric complications in women with and without asthma. METHODS: We extracted information on 281,019 pregnancies from the Health Improvement Network database between 1988 and 2004. We analyzed the data using logistic regression. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: In 37,585 pregnancies of women with asthma compared with 243,434 pregnancies of

Structure-activity relationships of steroid and sterol neuromodulators on inflammatory markers in a murine microglial cell line.

Neuroactive steroids are allosteric modulators of GABAA receptors and are implicated in the etiology and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. Existing treatments are helpful but have drawbacks. Neuroactive steroids recently gained attention as rapidly acting antidepressants in postpartum depression and other indications. Unlike other GABAA receptor modulators, neurosteroids may possess anti-inflammatory actions, potentially contributing to therapeutic benefit. Here we seek to understand neuroactive steroid structure-activity relationships relevant to these anti-inflammatory effects. We use

Impact of childbirth Post-traumatic stress disorder on the Mother-Infant Bond: a systematic review.

Traumatic birth is clinically defined as a labor process perceived by the mother as a significant threat to her or her newborn's safety, which can result in the development of Childbirth-Related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CB-PTSD). Women affected by CB-PTSD often face difficulties in forming positive and nurturing interactions with their infants, as the child may serve as a constant reminder of the traumatic event. A systematic review, which was based on the PRISMA guidelines, was conducted to analyze and critically assess existing research exploring the relationship between CB-PTSD and t

Real world pharmacovigilance assessment of drug related perinatal depression risks.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression (PND) is a prevalent and serious mental health concern affecting women during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Although several drugs have been implicated in PND etiology in previous studies, large-scale systematic evaluations of drug-associated PND using real-world pharmacovigilance data remain scarce. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective pharmacovigilance study utilizing the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System data spanning from Q1 2004 to Q2 2025. Disproportionality analysis, logistic regression, LASSO regression, and time-to-onset analysis were employe

Pregnancy and Childbearing for Orthopaedic Surgeons: Challenges and Successful Support Initiatives.

While female representation within surgical specialties is increasing, the field of orthopaedic surgery remains male-dominated. Residency, fellowship, and early career coincide with the childbearing years of female surgeons. Given the overlap between these critical career stages and years of childbearing, there has been a rise in articles characterizing the experiences and perceptions around childbearing and its impact on surgeons and their careers. Multiple studies have reported the alarmingly high rates of pregnancy complications, infertility, pregnancy loss, voluntary delay in childbearing,

Maternal and neonatal outcomes associated with restless legs syndrome in pregnancy: A systematic review.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) affects one in five pregnant women. This review aims to synthesise evidence regarding gestational RLS and its consequences on pregnant women and neonates. Search of Embase, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Maternity and Infant Care and Scopus was conducted in July 2018 using MeSH headings and keywords for 'restless legs syndrome' and 'pregnancy' or 'birth'. Our search identified 16 eligible studies from 12 countries published between 2004 and 2018 concerning gestational RLS and one or more maternal, delivery or neonatal outcomes. The most consistent associations were observed be

Oxytocin pathways in the intergenerational transmission of maternal early life stress.

Severe stress in early life, such as childhood abuse and neglect, constitutes a major risk factor in the etiology of psychiatric disorders and somatic diseases. Importantly, these long-term effects may impact the next generation. The intergenerational transmission of maternal early life stress (ELS) may occur via pre-and postnatal pathways, such as alterations in maternal-fetal-placental stress physiology, maternal depression during pregnancy and postpartum, as well as impaired mother-offspring interactions. The neuropeptide oxytocin (OT) has gained considerable attention for its role in modul

Treatment of depression in women: a summary of the expert consensus guidelines.

Women constitute two-thirds of patients suffering from common depressive disorders, making the treatment of depression in women a substantial public health concern. However, high-quality, empirical data on depressive disorders specific to women are limited, and there are no comprehensive evidence-based practice guidelines on the best treatments for these illnesses. To bridge the gap between research evidence and key clinical decisions, the authors developed a survey of expert opinion concerning treatment of four depressive conditions specific to women: premenstrual dysphoric disorder, depressi
