Prevalence of intestinal helminthic infections in Kao District, north Halmahera, Indonesia.

A parasitological survey was conducted on the inhabitants of six villages of Kao District, Halmahera Island, North Maluku, Indonesia, in July 1993. A total of 422 fecal samples were examined by using Kato-Katz thick smear, modified Harada-Mori culture and formalin ether concentration techniques. Seven nematode species, ie Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenale, Strongyloides stercoralis, Enterobius vermicularis and unidentified rhabditoids of free-living nature, were detected. Trematode and cestode infection was not proven. Necator americanus was t

Prevalence of intestinal helminths in Khuzestan, Southwest Iran, 1977.

Large scale studies were performed to determine the prevalence of various intestinal helminth infections in urban and rural areas of Khuzestan Province, southwest Iran. A total of 16,361 stool samples from people in 105 villages and 14 small towns were examined by the formalin-ether concentration method. Ascaris, hookworms, Trichostrongylus, Trichuris, and Hymenolepis nana showed the highest prevalence. Hookworms and Trichostrongylus were twice as prevalent in rural than in urban areas; in contrast, H. nana was more prevalent in urban areas while the level of Ascaris infections was not signifi

Immunoglobulin E in the sera of infants and children.

The serum IgE level has been studied from birth up to 14 years of age. The mean serum IgE concentration was found to be correlated with age. Parallel measurements in cord blood and maternal blood yielded a mean of 25 I.U./ml (range, 0--90 I.U.) for the former and one of 124 I.U./ml (range, 50-600 I.U.) for the latter. The normal IgE level ranged from 20 to 100 I.U./ml in infants and from 100 to 200 I.U./ml in children, but even values of 400 to 600 I.U. did not necessarily reflect a pathological condition. In the majority of patients with eczema, urticaria and spastic bronchitis, high IgE leve

Serology of Capillaria philippinensis infection: reactivity of human sera to antigens prepared from Capillaria obsignata and other helminths.

The reactivity of sera from 151 confirmed human cases of Capillaria philippinensis infection was examined by double diffusion and indirect hemagglutination (IHA) tests chiefly against Capillaria obsignata antigen because of the present unavailability of C. philippinensis antigen. Antigens from additional parasites and other human and animal sera representing a variety of helminthic infections were used for comparison. Of 71 pre-treatment human sera, 56.3% were reactive by double diffusion test and 85.9% by IHA test (titer greater than 1:16) with C. obsignata antigen. C. philippinensis sera wer

Efficacy and tolerability of moxidectin alone and in co-administration with albendazole and tribendimidine versus albendazole plus oxantel pamoate against Trichuris trichiura infections: a randomised, non-inferiority, single-blind trial.

BACKGROUND: The recommended anthelmintics show low efficacy in a single-dose regimen against Trichuris trichiura. Moxidectin, a new treatment for river blindness, might complement the drug armamentarium for the treatment and control of soil-transmitted helminthiasis. However, its efficacy against T trichiura has not yet been studied. The aim of the study was to assess the efficacy of moxidectin alone and in co-administrations against T trichiura infection. METHODS: A randomised, single-blind, non-inferiority trial was done in two primary schools and one secondary school in Pemba, Tanzania. Ad…

High infection risk of intestinal helminths despite WASH interventions: A cross-sectional study in Khammouane province, Lao PDR.

BACKGROUND: Despite the widespread implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) program over the last two decades, Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) remains highly endemic for intestinal helminth infections. We assessed the intestinal helminth infections burden and the link with WASH levels in an area with WASH interventions. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted across 81 villages in Khammouane province, Lao PDR, where WASH interventions were implemented. Villages and 30 participants (aged 18-87 years) per village were randomly selected. Demographics, individual an

Prevalence and associated factors of intestinal parasitic infections in the Badi indigenous communities of Western Nepal.

Despite years of a national deworming campaign, the incidence of intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) remains relatively high among certain ethnic groups, with lifestyle factors distinct from those of the general population. Despite existing studies on the prevalence of IPIs, there is limited research exploring the contextual associated factors within the Badi Indigenous community. Our objective in this study was to assess the prevalence of IPIs in the indigenous Badi community of Gurbhakot Municipality, Surkhet, Nepal, considering socioeconomic, lifestyle, and behavioral factors. A total of

Individual adherence to mass drug administration in neglected tropical disease control: A probability model conditional on past behaviour.

We present a general framework which describes the systematic (binary) scenario of individuals either taking treatment or not for any reason, over the course of mass drug administration (MDA)-which we refer to as 'adherence' and 'non-adherence'. The probability models developed can be informed by observed adherence behaviour as well as employed to explore how different patterns influence the impact of MDA programmes, by the use of mathematical models of transmission and control. We demonstrate the interpretative value of the developed probability model employing a dataset collected in the TUMI

Assessing anthelmintic resistance risk in the post-genomic era: a proof-of-concept study assessing the potential for widespread benzimidazole-resistant gastrointestinal nematodes in North American cattle and bison.

As genomic research continues to improve our understanding of the genetics of anthelmintic drug resistance, the revolution in DNA sequencing technologies will provide increasing opportunities for large-scale surveillance for the emergence of drug resistance. In most countries, parasite control in cattle and bison has mainly depended on pour-on macrocyclic lactone formulations resulting in widespread ivermectin resistance. Consequently, there is an increased interest in using benzimidazole drugs which have been used comparatively little in cattle and bison in recent years. This situation, toget

Effectiveness of Mass Drug Administration on Neglected Tropical Diseases in Schoolchildren in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

Soil-transmitted helminths and Schistosoma haematobium affect more than 3 billion people globally and mainly occur in sub-Saharan Africa. The present study assessed the overall infection status of a 1716-student cohort of school-children in Zanzibar and applied mass drug administration (MDA) to the cohort from 2007 to 2009. Schools in Pemba, Zanzibar, had a much higher prevalence of soil-transmitted helminth infections than those in Unguja, and the Chaani, Ghana, and Machui schools of Unguja exhibited high S. haematobium infection rates. The MDA program only partially controlled parasite infec

Soil-transmitted helminth infections and taeniasis on Samosir Island, Indonesia.

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are important causes of morbidity in poorer areas of developing countries, with high endemicity in Southeast Asia. Humans are most often exposed to the infective forms of STHs in areas with sub-standard sanitation. The number of STH infections globally was estimated at 1.5 billion in 2018. In Indonesia, the prevalence of STH infections ranges from 2.5% to 62.0%. STH and taeniasis infections were evaluated on Samosir Island, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Field surveys were conducted in January 2003, February 2005, and February 2006 in Simanindo Subdistrict

Combined effectiveness of anthelmintic chemotherapy and WASH among HIV-infected adults.

INTRODUCTION: Current global helminth control guidelines focus on regular deworming of targeted populations for morbidity control. However, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions may also be important for reducing helminth transmission. We evaluated the impact of different potential helminth protective packages on infection prevalence, including repeated treatment with albendazole and praziquantel with and without WASH access. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted a cohort study nested within a randomized trial of empiric deworming of HIV-infected adults in Kenya. Helminth

Helminthic infections in returning travelers and migrants with eosinophilia: Diagnostic value of medical history, eosinophil count and IgE.

OBJECTIVES: Eosinophilia in travelers and migrants returning from the tropics is often associated with invasive helminthic infections. Total IgE is considered a useful additional diagnostic parameter; however, both parameters are also increased in various other non-helminthic diseases. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated travelers and migrants seen at our department between September 2007 and May 2014. Patients with an absolute eosinophil count ≥500 cells/μl were considered for further analyses. RESULTS: Among 6618 returned travelers and migrants, 154 (2.3%) had a total eosinophil count ≥5

High prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum and soil-transmitted helminth co-infections in a periurban community in Kwara State, Nigeria.

Prevalence of malaria and soil-transmitted helminth infections, and the burden of disease are enormous in sub-Saharan Africa. Co-infections aggravate the clinical outcome, but are common due to an overlap of endemic areas. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to assess prevalence, intensity of infection and association between malaria and soil-transmitted helminth infections in a typical periurban community in Kwara State. Fresh blood and faecal samples were examined using thick blood film and Kato-Katz smear techniques. A total of 383/471 study participants (81.3%) were infected with at lea

Estimating the Effect of School Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Improvements on Pupil Health Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: We conducted a cluster-randomized water, sanitation, and hygiene trial in 185 schools in Nyanza province, Kenya. The trial, however, had imperfect school-level adherence at many schools. The primary goal of this study was to estimate the causal effects of school-level adherence to interventions on pupil diarrhea and soil-transmitted helminth infection. METHODS: Schools were divided into water availability groups, which were then randomized separately into either water, sanitation, and hygiene intervention arms or a control arm. School-level adherence to the intervention was define

Prevalence of Soil-Transmitted Helminths and Molecular Clarification of Hookworm Species in Ethnic Ede Primary Schoolchildren in Dak Lak Province, Southern Vietnam.

To know the infection status of helminths in primary schoolchildren of southern parts of Vietnam, we performed an epidemiological study in Krong Pac district, Dak Lak Province, Vietnam. A total of 1,206 stool specimens were collected from ethnic Ede schoolchildren in 4 primary schools in 2015 and examined by the Kato-Katz technique. In addition, stool cultures were done by the Harada-Mori method to obtain hookworm larvae and then to clarify the species of hookworms infected. The results showed that the helminth infection rate was 25.0%, including 2.0% Ascaris lumbricoides, 0.33% Trichuris tric
