CT imaging features of paranasal sinuses in children with primary ciliary dyskinesia.

BACKGROUND: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) causes impaired mucociliary clearance and results in chronic pulmonary and sinonasal symptoms. OBJECTIVES: To study the CT imaging features of paranasal sinuses in children with PCD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 17 PCD patients ranged from 4 to 13 years, a mean age of 7.9 ± 3.3 years, were included in the final analysis. Patients with non-PCD chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) who accepted maxillary balloon catheter dilation were included in the control group. Paranasal sinuses CT scans were scored according to the Lund-Mackay staging system. The correlation

Water balloon-induced orbital fracture in an aviator.

BACKGROUND: Orbital fractures are common injuries found in facial trauma. Typical etiologies of orbital fractures include motor vehicle collisions and assault. We report the case of a 32-year-old male who suffered an orbital fracture from a water balloon. Additionally, we describe the aeromedical complications that may result from this injury. Finally, we attempt to answer the question of when a patient may return to flying after sustaining such an injury through review of the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old male pilot with the United States Air Force was at an outdoor event with

Anatomical Region Segmentation for Objective Surgical Skill Assessment with Operating Room Motion Data.

Background  Most existing objective surgical motion analysis schemes are limited to structured surgical tasks or recognition of motion patterns for certain categories of surgeries. Analyzing instrument motion data with respect to anatomical structures can break the limit, and an anatomical region segmentation algorithm is required for the analysis. Methods  An atlas was generated by manually segmenting the skull base into nine regions, including left/right anterior/posterior ethmoid sinuses, frontal sinus, left and right maxillary sinuses, nasal airway, and sphenoid sinus. These regions were s

Sinonasal complications resulting from dental treatment: outcome-oriented proposal of classification and surgical protocol.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic sinusitis is a relevant infectious condition of the paranasal sinuses. The widespread use of dental implants and reconstructive procedures for dental implant placement has led to new types of complication. To the authors' knowledge, no publication has extensively examined sinonasal complications resulting from dental treatment, and no classification system allowing standardization and comparison of results is currently available. This study was designed to (a) analyze the results obtained from surgical treatment of complications resulting from dental procedures combinin

Survival rate for implants placed in the posterior maxilla with and without sinus augmentation: a comparative cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The reduced bone height and proximity of the maxillary sinus are the most common limitations for placement of dental implants in the posterior maxilla. Reconstruction of the atrophic posterior maxilla can be performed with a sinus augmentation procedure. The aim of this cohort study is to compare the survival rate of implants placed in augmented sinus to implants placed in native bone in the posterior maxilla. METHODS: This study was designed as a prospective cohort study and included consecutively treated patients. Patients who required the sinus augmentation (test group) were tr

Nasal polyp-derived superoxide anion: dose-dependent inhibition by nitric oxide and pathophysiological implications.

The epithelium of the paranasal sinuses produces nitric oxide (NO), which probably plays a major role in the nonspecific defense of these cavities through its bacteriostatic and cilia motility stimulation properties. Abundant eosinophils of nasal polyps potentially generate superoxide anion (O2-*), but NO and O2-* inactivate reciprocally. The purpose of the present work was to evaluate the relationship between NO concentrations and nasal polyp production of O2-*. Polyp fragments from 24 patients were studied using histological examination and lucigenin-enhanced chemiluminescence (to assess O2-

Extra middle turbinate lamellas: a suggested new classification.

PURPOSE: Proper knowledge of sinonasal configurations and anatomical structural variations is essential to perform safe endoscopic sinus surgery. Although common middle turbinate variations have been well described in literature, rare variations have not. The aims of this study are to revise the nomenclature of extra middle turbinate lamellas variations and suggest an easy classification system of these lamellas. METHOD: A retrospective charts and medical records review was performed for consecutive cases that were diagnosed with extra lamella middle turbinate based on endoscopic and stander

Fixation of Flowable Composite Resin Within Crossing Sutures for the Closure of Oroantral Communications: Two Clinical Cases and Literature Review.

Background: Oroantral communications (OACs) are pathological openings between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus, often resulting from dental extractions. If not treated promptly, they may lead to sinus infections and persistent oroantral fistulas (OAFs). Objective: This report aims to present a minimally invasive technique for the closure of OACs using flowable composite resin stabilized within a network of crossing sutures and to assess its clinical efficacy. Case Descriptions: Two male patients, aged 27 and 31, presented with OACs measuring 8 mm and 6 mm in diameter following maxillary

Treatment of oroantral fistula with autologous bone graft and application of a non-reabsorbable membrane.

AIM: The aim of the current report is to illustrate an alternative technique for the treatment of oroantral fistula (OAF), using an autologous bone graft integrated by xenologous particulate bone graft. BACKGROUND: Acute and chronic oroantral communications (OAC, OAF) can occur as a result of inadequate treatment. In fact surgical procedures into the maxillary posterior area can lead to inadvertent communication with the maxillary sinus. Spontaneous healing can occur in defects smaller than 3 mm while larger communications should be treated without delay, in order to avoid sinusitis. The most
