Transitioning sleeping position detection in late pregnancy using computer vision from controlled to real-world settings: an observational study.

Sleeping on the back after 28 weeks of pregnancy has recently been associated with giving birth to a small-for-gestational-age infant and late stillbirth, but whether a causal relationship exists is currently unknown and difficult to study prospectively. This study was conducted to build a computer vision model that can automatically detect sleeping position in pregnancy under real-world conditions. Real-world overnight video recordings were collected from an ongoing, Canada-wide, prospective, four-night, home sleep apnea study and controlled-setting video recordings were used from a previous

Improved tactile speech robustness to background noise with a dual-path recurrent neural network noise-reduction method.

Many people with hearing loss struggle to understand speech in noisy environments, making noise robustness critical for hearing-assistive devices. Recently developed haptic hearing aids, which convert audio to vibration, can improve speech-in-noise performance for cochlear implant (CI) users and assist those unable to access hearing-assistive devices. They are typically body-worn rather than head-mounted, allowing additional space for batteries and microprocessors, and so can deploy more sophisticated noise-reduction techniques. The current study assessed whether a real-time-feasible dual-path

Information-processing dynamics in neural networks of macaque cerebral cortex reflect cognitive state and behavior.

One of the essential functions of biological neural networks is the processing of information. This includes everything from processing sensory information to perceive the environment, up to processing motor information to interact with the environment. Due to methodological limitations, it has been historically unclear how information processing changes during different cognitive or behavioral states and to what extent information is processed within or between the network of neurons in different brain areas. In this study, we leverage recent advances in the calculation of information dynamic

Artificial neural network modelling of the neural population code underlying mathematical operations.

Mathematical operations have long been regarded as a sparse, symbolic process in neuroimaging studies. In contrast, advances in artificial neural networks (ANN) have enabled extracting distributed representations of mathematical operations. Recent neuroimaging studies have compared distributed representations of the visual, auditory and language domains in ANNs and biological neural networks (BNNs). However, such a relationship has not yet been examined in mathematics. Here we hypothesise that ANN-based distributed representations can explain brain activity patterns of symbolic mathematical op

Emergence of cortical network motifs for short-term memory during learning.

Learning of adaptive behaviors requires the refinement of coordinated activity across multiple brain regions. However, how neural communications develop during learning remains poorly understood. Here, using two-photon calcium imaging, we simultaneously recorded the activity of layer 2/3 excitatory neurons in eight regions of the mouse dorsal cortex during learning of a delayed-response task. Across learning, while global functional connectivity became sparser, there emerged a subnetwork comprising of neurons in the anterior lateral motor cortex (ALM) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Locomotor pattern generation and descending control: a historical perspective.

The ability to generate and control locomotor movements depends on complex interactions between many areas of the nervous system, the musculoskeletal system, and the environment. How the nervous system manages to accomplish this task has been the subject of investigation for more than a century. In vertebrates, locomotion is generated by neural networks located in the spinal cord referred to as central pattern generators. Descending inputs from the brain stem initiate, maintain, and stop locomotion as well as control speed and direction. Sensory inputs adapt locomotor programs to the environme

Effect of simulated cataract on the accuracy of artificial intelligence in detecting diabetic retinopathy in color fundus photos.

PURPOSE: Artificial intelligence (AI) is often trained on images without ocular co-morbidities, limiting its generalizability. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of a convolutional neural network (CNN) applied to color fundus photos (CFPs) with simulated cataracts (SCs) in detecting diabetic retinopathy (DR). METHODS: A database of 3662 CFPs (from Asia Pacific Tele-Ophthalmology Society (APTOS) 2019) was used. Using transfer learning, a CNN was trained to classify the training images as either DR or non-DR. The CNN was then applied to classify the testing images after an SC was applied,

Dementia classification using a graph neural network on imaging of effective brain connectivity.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are two of the most common forms of neurodegenerative diseases. The literature suggests that effective brain connectivity (EBC) has the potential to track differences between AD, PD and healthy controls (HC). However, how to effectively use EBC estimations for the research of disease diagnosis remains an open problem. To deal with complex brain networks, graph neural network (GNN) has been increasingly popular in very recent years and the effectiveness of combining EBC and GNN techniques has been unexplored in the field of dementia diagnosi
